Looking at getting the new laptop today, Dell offers "high-end" laptops with IntelŪ PentiumŪ M 770 Processor (2.13GHz/533MHz FSB)/IntelŪ PentiumŪ M 760 Processor (2GHz/533MHz FSB) ? Are these good processors?

The Pentium M is generally a very good processor -- it's more like the Athlon than the P4 in that it gets more done at a slower clock speed, and AFAIK it's believed that Intel will be transitioning their primary processor line to something based on the M in the future with the P4 design appearing to max out with the current generation of processors.
I don't know where those specific processors fall in the lineup.

Is it better then the P4?

Pentium M uses a lot less power and will run cooler. It was specifically designed for the laptop as opposed to the pentium 4 which is a desktop processor ported to a laptop. If you can afford it, I would recommend the Pentium M.

Does it run as quickly as the P4's with the 3.2-3.6 ranges?

This is my laptop (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=34-115-154&depa=0)... I absolutly love it.

dola
Wanted - AMD (Check)
Bonus - 64-bit (check)
Wanted - ATI video card (Check)
Bonus - 128MB of Video RAM (Check)
Wanted - 11.g (check)
Wanted - DVD Burner (Check)
On top of it all, it has a car paint finish and looks really nice. It came with it's own matching USB mini-mouse.
Screw Intel, go AMD :D

Yeah, it's not bad for the price. Just asked if you were a Ferrari fan because it's Ferrari-branded.
I'm looking at a 3.2Ghz P4 processor, 2GB RAM and a 80GM hard drive. Just want to check out this other processor first, and would love to run all of Europe in FM2005 (85 leagues in 34 countries) if I could.

Let me ask you this, are you going to use this laptop in place of a desktop or are you going to travel with it some?

I think you want to be careful when you're considering getting a laptop with a desktop processor - there are some legitimate concerns about greatly increasing your risk of mechanical breakdown by doing so due to the higher heat output in such a confined space.
For reliability reasons, I think you should strongly consider the laptop-specific processors that run cooler.

I completely agree. This is why I went with this model http://hardware.gamespot.com/Acer-Aspire-2025WLMi-4323-O-1-3 over something like the Ferrari. There have been many reports of issues with the Ferrari model.

It will be in place of the desktop. I will take it to school with me, and home, and if I go on vacation (which is rare), I will carry it.
I'm just looking for something that can compete with the P4 3.2-3.6 range.
Edited: I want something that will be good for three-maybe four years (after college and to whereever I relocate). I am huge on FM2005, and want a great system to run as many leagues as possible, and do it quickly.

There have been studies and it is generally said that a Pentium M performs at the equivalent of 1.5 the speed. So, a 2.1 Pentium M would be the equivalent of a 3.15 Pentium 4. I'd strongly recommomend the pentium M if you can afford it. Like I said, it was specifically designed for laptop technology. You will get more than two times the battery life and it will run much much cooler.

So you double the GHz of the M processor, and that would equal the P4 speed?

Not double it, multiply it by 1.5.

IntelŪ PentiumŪ M 760 Processor (2GHz/533MHz FSB)
2Yr Ltd Warranty, 2Yr At-Home Service, and 2Yr Technical Support
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 2 Dimm
80GB Hard Drive
Something I am figuring out..
Are the Athlon processors good? I do not know much about them.
Basically, I'll spell it out. I am pretty much using it for the basic internet and word processing services, and FM 2005 (and the netx version :) ).

I would definitely get a pentium M if the price difference isn't a concern. AMD is good, but like Pentium 4, the processors weren't designed for a laptop.

Yeah, I ask if Athlon had a "competitor" for the M. I might go with the system above. I'm not sure if you play FM 2005, but it should not be a problem? I am trying to decide wheather to go for 2GB RAM. It's pretty pricey upgrade at $700-some bucks.

Sorry, you are correct. When I shopped for my laptop, AMD did not have such a processor. Both AMD and Pentium had an adapted version of their desktop processors for the laptops. Intel had Mobile Pentium 4 and Athlon had Mobile AMD 64. The Pentium M's were fairly new then.

no worries...
I'm not a CPU bigot. I go for performance and value.. my desktop is an AMD (value for performance at the time), my linux box/router is a celery 366 (this is way old, and was value for what it was going to do), my laptop is an AMD athlon 64 3400+.. it runs fm2005 (wwsm2005, really)...
