And here I thought kcchief was the only other boardie who'd spent any kind of time in the Newhall/Saugus area. Me, I've been in the SCV basically solid since, what...'93? Sounds about right. Before then, I spent a year in Goleta, before that, two years in Santa Barbara, before that, something like six years in Ventura, and then the four or so remaining years were spent in Visalia.

Actually, if you work in the same complex that I was in, you will be in the same building that trains the Turkish military athletes for regional and national sporting events. Pretty cool.
PS - Don't play them in basketball, they will kill you and then ask why you suck so bad at your own game. Fuckers.

In Ankara, because of all the embassies, they have teams (based on nationalities) of amateurs that play. But it may not be serious enough for you. And they generally don't play on the big fields, they play on smaller artificial turf fields that eat your skin alive. So as a goalie, be prepared to bleed if you go that route!
I'm not sure how easy it is to get on a local city league as an American, but if there is a way, there are Turkish people you will work with that would be glad to help you figure it all out.
As for top-league soccer,
Galatasaray, based in Istanbul used an American goalie (as a matter of fact, our US national goalie during the last world cup--can't remember his name now). But they hated him because he wasn't very good when he was younger and played for Galatasaray.
But if you like soccer, the Turks will adore you (because the true soccer fans that are American are rare). The big guys in Turkey when I was there was Hassan Sas and Hakan Sukur, but they may be too old now to be considered stars.

I have never been to either of them. My mother lives near the second one. I never really did the bar scene until I lived in NYC. It's so much better here... Those places always frightened me a little bit. I always pictured walking in and there is chicken wire, a mechanical bull, and a bunch of fat, drunk, rednecks in overalls and cowboy hats. Country music just is not my scene. Thank God that it doesn't exist in NYC!

I've lived many places. The only place I consider to be home is Schoolcraft, MI. There's many reasons for that, but I won't get into it. My step-dad was/is a surveyor and my mom was/is a very ill woman who was never satisfied or happy with where she was at. She's in adult foster-care in Kissimmee, FL now, but that's another story.
Stuff happens, but even though it's made my life a bit "unsettled", I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything. I'm far from perfect, but I like who I am at this point in my life.

Short but memorable time as a kid there. We moved there because my mother's life long best friend lived there, I was in 1st, 2nd, and part of 3rd grade the time I was there. Thats about the time the family structure started to slowly break down....woohoo.

Leachville is impessive. I don't recall anything worthwhile there. I did see Return of the Jedi at the theatre there, but as I recall it's now closed.

Small world... The only reason I lived there is because it is where my grandparents live and where my mother was born (My Dad was born in Manila). The first time I lived there was because my mother wanted to be closer to my grandparents and the second time is because she went back to school to get her masters.
The theatre is/was called The Melody Theater. The only movie I remember seeing there was "Heavenly Kid" in the mid 80's.
I still go back there often (my grandparents still live there). In fact, I was there three weeks ago.

Our first son, Andrew, was born in Pittsfield too, lots of great memories related to that city...

Grandparents live in Manila actually. Grandpa bought the old Manila jail. Made a bbq stand out of it for a bit, and then turned it into a house. My grandmother lives next door. Yes, I know what I just said.
My uncle owns or works at the hardware store by Fred's. He's from my dad's side, and I don't know much about that side of the family.
Lived out there in 1981-2 (first and 2nd grade) before I eventually moved to Harrisburg. I still remember a number of names from the kids in my classes. I originally moved there while my dad was looking for work. He eventually found a better job in Harrisburg.
Because of the family in Manila and in Harrisburg, I travel back and forth and through Leachville every few years.

This is really cool. Between 4 or 5 messages, AE and I discovered that we were in the very same first grade class in a small town in Arkansas. Considering how small the town was, the odds of this are ridiculous. What's funny is that, although I don't remember us having a lot of interaction, I do specifically remember teaching him to draw stars. I guess there was a reason that memory stuck in my head for so long... I've got a yearbook from that grade somewhere in my basement and I'm going to tear that place apart looking for it this weekend. I am totally blown away by this....

Nope, he was from Arlington. He lived down the street from one of my high school girlfriends.
IFunny story about him. He signed a letter of intent to go to UT, but ended up signing out of high school with I believe the A's. He had already enrolled at UT by the time he signed the contract, but I guess he never un-enrolled. He was on the class roster for my Calculus class. The prof did roll call, and when she came to his name, those of us who knew who he was kinda laughed. She asked what was so funny, and we told her he signed a huge contract to play baseball. I guess she didn't make a mental note of that, and for every class that semester, she continuted to call his name.

I didn't say it was my choice. What's funny is that we moved away from there after two years because of my mom's fear of earthquakes... all fed by a misaligned washing machine that shook the house one night. That was enough.
My mom was convinced that the house we lived in was haunted (in Leachville, of course).

Back when I was living in Abilene I was an assistant manager at the Wendy's there. Well, Abilene is home to Dyess AFB so we always got lots of AF guys coming into the restaurant. Well, one day I was working the drive-thru when the guy I was handing his food to looked awfully familiar. I asked him if his name was Tom, and sure enough it was a dude I had gone to 6-9th grade and played on several baseball and basketball teams with. I was probably 22 at the time, so it was cool as hell to run into an old friend that I hadn't seen in seven or eight years in a place that we probably didn't know even existed back then... :)

You know, I was going to make some snide comment about how Van Poppel should have stuck with the calculus, since he was such a bust as a pitcher, but then it occured to me that he DID manage to stretch his career out for 13 seasons. I'll never understand how....he was like the energizer bunny of suckiness. (oops, there's the snide comment)

That's near Charleston, right? Whatever took you there?
Yes it is about half way in between Charleston and Huntington. My dad was transferred to a job in Charleston so I was out there with them for 6 months.

My grandmother has a farm in Linden(or New Richmond, I always forget which). Anyways going to Crawfordsville was always referred to as "going to town". I always thought that was weird :)
:) Still considered that to many. Both Linden and New Richmond are right around this area, so it could be either.

It's Arkansas. We're probably that and/or cousins.
Which means he would also be my cousin.

It was definitely Linden, I had to ask her last night cause it was bugging me :D
She still talks about how that scene from Hoosiers was filmed in the area.

That is a lot of people's claim to fame around here! I have actually played in one of the gyms they filmed the movie in. It brought chills to almost everyone that knew the significance of the place.
I got through Linden everytime I go to Lafayette. There is a good ice cream place called the Lindy Freeze on the main road through Linden.

Actually, I was going to ask you if I could post the picture...
I am Chad Horner (looking quite dapper with my uneven haircut and slightly askew Granimal shirt. What can I say? I was a player) and AE is Rodney Polston (with with his shirt buttoned all the way to the stop.... a hard ass even then).

I thought the same thing... I doubt a class that size would happen with today's endless budget cuts. I guess we had it pretty good.

I'm getting a red X now. I'll have to look into that when I get back home...unless I can work some mojo here.

I guess it's just me at work then. :)
My mom would always mention the weird names we had in Leachville.
She always used Rowdy, which as I recall really was name, as an example.

It is just you...
A friend of mine grew up in Jefferson City, MO and swore that she knew two kids named Soda Popp and Lolli Popp. Well, after I derided her for her vicious lies, she sent me this...

Not to mention that a friend of mine's (Bryan Kirby) grandfather's name was Mule.
I seem to remember asking J.B. what that stood for, and he would never say...or he said that was it. "J.B."

New Orleans, LA - 28 years
That's it! I'm 95% certain to be moving at the end of this summer, though. The most likely possibilities are Greensburg, PA (30 miles from Pittsburgh), and Framingham, MA (20 miles from Boston). Greensburg is much more likely than Framingham, but either could happen. Right now, I'd rank the possibilities of my location this fall as follows:
Greensburg, PA - 85%
Framingham, MA - 10%
New Orleans, LA - 4.8%
Kearney, NE - 0.12%
Jumping into the Gulf of Mexico at the notion of living in Kearney, NE - 0.08%
This thread has been on life support for two weeks, but I am reviving it to announce that I will be moving to Pennsylvania. I don't know whether I'll be living in Greensburg proper yet, but I will certainly be in the area. In less than four months, I'll be living outside New Orleans for the first time in my life. I'm going to miss this place.

Thanks very much. I'm looking forward to experiencing new things up there, even though I'll miss New Orleans a ton.
