View Full Version : OT: The 4th annual Chan Ho Park blows thread

In the absence of HFP (has anyone heard from him lately?), here we go.
During the regular season, Chan Ho's line for games he pitches in the majors will be put into this thread.
For competitive reasons, people are allowed to post what they think CHP's final, end of year, major league totals will be. The closest guess wins the admiration and/or scorn of the other entrants.
Have fun!

This could be a short thread. From Peter Gammons' column today:
The Rangers have been given clearance by ownership to eat Chan Ho Park's contract, if they decide he can't help them this season. That's $14.72 million for 2005 and $15.99 million for 2006.

I've got a ways to go. I only have two cars, and no motorcycles.

Note to self.... remember not to draft Chan Ho Park this year.... that's all...

My prediction is the Braves will sign him sometime in July, and by September he'll be the ace of the staff. Just cause. God I hate Leo Mazzone.

This thread is about as legitimate as someone other than SD posting an "Alright Boyz..." thread.
This is wrong on so many levels. Well OK, just one level, but it's still WRONG!

On a seperate, but highly related note, has anyone heard from HornedFrogPurple? His last visit appears to be back in the middle of January. He was a pretty regular visitor and poster. Did Hattrick take him over in a Matrix-esque fashion?

It is with great reluctance that I continue posting in this thread absent HFP, but....
Chan Ho Park was charged with four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings tonight against the Royals.
A pair of home runs prevented Park from lowering his ERA, but he still did OK tonight. He gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three. Mar. 25 - 12:38 am et

Chan Ho Park surrendered six runs and eight hits in five innings today against the Padres.
With Pedro Astacio's groin a factor and Ricardo Rodriguez still not showing a lot of consistency, the Rangers have probably ruled out giving up on Park before the start of the season. He won't have a lot of job security, but he should open up as a the Rangers' fourth starter. Mar. 29 - 9:43 pm et

From cnnsi. . .
The seven players to watch, guys who could breakout:
6. Chan Ho Park, RHP, Rangers
Yes, he's this close to going down in history as the worst free-agent signing of all time. But Park has impressed Texas with a much tougher, more confident attitude this spring. He won't be the No. 1 pitcher the Rangers expected, but he looks good enough to contribute about 12 wins -- unless he folds in the face of adversity again.

If i pitched like Chan Ho, I'd probably be opening day starter for the royals Not quite, but you'd probably be number three behind Lima Time and Wunderkind Space Cadet Zack.
EDIT: That said, I'd rather have Brian "Trade Bait" Anderson, Runelvys "Tommy John" Hernandez, and Denny "My two claims to 'fame' are that I'm Pedro's cousin and I was traded for Jason Grimsley" Bautista in my rotation because at least there's some upside there since the former might in a crazy universe get us something of value while the latter two are young.

The Rangers looked at Chan Ho Park's improved control as well as Park's health, his improved sinker and his overall spring demeanor and have decided that his spot on the Rangers is no longer in imminent danger. Park makes his first start of the season tonight in Seattle.

Anyway, I think Orel can work minor miracles, so Chan might actually have something close to a respectable year, especially if he remembers that the sinker works: (I still think he'll pull something though, and miss a bunch of time)

He's so misunderstood. Look at that pitching stat line and tell me it's not artwork. There's 4 4s in the middle.. that has to be symbolism for something. He wants a challenge. Any regular Joe can pitch well, Chan wants to make his stats stand out.

Chan Ho Park was prohibited from making his first scheduled start for the Mets last week because of visa problems that did not allow him to pitch anywhere that charged admission.
When Park finally took the mound Wednesday here at City of Palms Park, the Korean righthander might have wished that government officials in his native country could have waited another day or two to finish the paperwork.
Last Friday, Park faced a bunch of no-name minor-leaguers on a back field at the Mets' spring training complex with manager Willie Randolph calling balls and strikes. Wednesday, it was the Red Sox, who sent out what is likely to be their Opening Day lineup, minus second baseman Dustin Pedroia and catcher Jason Varitek.
Manny, Big Papi, J.D. Drew. The same crew that expects to knock heads with the Yankees for supremacy in the American League East stared back menacingly at Park, and in the first inning, he was the one who blinked. Park danced around Boston's potent lineup, barely touching the strike zone, and he needed 30 pitches to make it through the first.
"I've faced them a lot," said Park, who spent four years in the Rangers rotation and is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA against the Sox. "They're such good hitters. Sometimes, it's very fun. But sometimes it's very ugly."
Despite the potential for disaster, Park allowed only one run, and that came on an unusual 6-4-5 double play when Julio Lugo scored ahead of David Wright's tag on David Ortiz. It could have been much worse. Park walked two, but the only hit was Ortiz's liner through the right side of the Mets' shift.
That was on a 3-and-2 pitch, and Park got lucky. He left a curveball up, and Ortiz usually deposits those somewhere 400 feet or so from home plate. After that, it was a seven-pitch walk to Manny Ramirez, but Drew ripped a one-hopper directly to Jose Reyes, whose flip to Jose Valentin started the inning-ending double play.
Park labored in that first inning, and his tentative approach could have been more costly.
But Randolph, who has seen plenty of Ramirez and Ortiz, tried to be a little sympathetic to what Park had to deal with in his first outing.
"It's human nature," Ran.dolph said. "No matter if it's spring training or not, no one wants to go out there and get beat up. Even though it's spring training, and you want to get your work in, I think there's still a tendency to sometimes be a little careful when you've got those big boppers out there."
The challenge was twofold. It also was his first start since Aug. 16, when he faced the Giants at PETCO Park, and the seventh-month gap felt a little strange. It was shortly after that start that Park wound up on the disabled list because of surgery to repair intestinal bleeding, and when he finally returned at the end of September, the Padres put him in the bullpen for the postseason.
"I thought about that when I walked on the mound," said Park, who actually missed by a month when asked about the last time he started. "That was a long time ago. I pitched in the playoffs for two innings, but it's different."
Fortunately, it didn't take very long for Park to compose himself. With that rocky first inning behind him, Park was a different pitcher over the next two. After speaking with pitching coach Rick Peterson, he dumped his erratic curveball for a changeup, and did a much better job spotting his fastball.
He retired five straight and six of seven to finish up, with the only hit a two-out single in the third by Kevin Youkilis. Oritz grounded into the shift this time to end the inning, and Park needed only 24 pitches for his last two innings.
"I feel like it's been a long time," Park said. "In the first inning, I felt like I over-pitched, I rushed, with all the excitement, instead of hitting the target. My ball was moving like crazy."
After talking with Peterson and Randolph, Park throttled back on the adrenaline. In his estimation, Park was pitching at "80 or 90" percent after the first inning. His velocity dipped, but his control sharpened, and Park recovered nicely.
"I felt very good this offseason, especially physical-wise," Park said. "After the surgery last year, I worked a lot, trying to get stronger. That's how I felt -- new team, trying to get a job, trying to get a spot." </P>Copyright 2007 Newsday Inc.

March 25, 2007 -- PORT ST. LUCIE - Chan Ho Park has been removed from the list of candidates for the Mets' rotation and has been assigned to a potential relief role.
Willie Randolph lifted Park from yesterday's start after only three innings, and the manager plans to try using Park as a reliever. "Right now, he's going to be in the bullpen," Randolph said.

April 30, 2007 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - In what may turn into troubling news for the Mets, Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez headed to New York yesterday for tests on his ailing right shoulder.
According to general manager Omar Minaya, Hernandez felt tightness in his shoulder. The 41-year-old right-hander, who threw a bullpen session Saturday, has started strong this season, going 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA.
Hernandez, who battled neck arthritis and a right hamstring cramp in spring training, is scheduled to start tonight against the Marlins and Minaya said he believed Hernandez would still take the mound. If he can't, however, the possibilities would include Mike Pelfrey (he would be pitching on four days' rest but threw a bullpen session yesterday), Aaron Sele or possibly Chan Ho Park.
Park is 3-1 with a 7.29 ERA in four starts with Triple-A New Orleans and is slated to pitch for New Orleans today.
