Bought this CD over the weekend. After the first listen, I thought it wasn't very good... but after a few more listens, it's grown on me. I loved Discovery, and this isn't as good as that... not even close. But it still has some good songs. My main beef is the quantity of songs. Only 9!

Anyone else listen to this, or am I the only Daft Punk fan here?

Discovery and Homework are t3H 4\/\/350/V\3!!!!1!!111!! (See, I like them so much I lapsed into 1337).

Howver, I have heard that the new album is only of moderate Daft Punk quality so haven't bought it yet. (But probably will soon anyway to be honest...)

dola

I really like the single Robot Rock though, only the middling reviews putting me off temporarily.

Sorry Ksyrup. :)

I think overall, the songs that I don't like suffer from too much repetition of sounds I don't like.
I guess I'll post a song-by-song small review:
Human After All: My favourite song on the CD.
Steam Machine: Rough sound... like.. industrial or something. The reversal of the beat near the end is cool.
Television Rules The Nation:I love the sounds in this. One of the songs I really like.
The Brainwasher: Don't really like it. I'm not a fan of any of the sounds used. Kind of heavy I guess.
Emotion: A nice light song. If it wasn't for the weird metal alarm sounding (??) thing, I'd like it a lot more. I still like it as it stands though.
Make Love: You expect something to happen more in the song... but it never does. Kind of simple, although soothing. Like that song on Discovery in the middle somewhere with the heart pounding sound.
Robot Rock: I like the guitar.
Technologic: A bunch of words repeated like "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," but without the cool effect of making the words sound like an instrument.
The Prime Time Of Your Life: Very cool. :) A constant evolution in the song... starts with a weird beat, and every so often more gets added... more sounds, more lyrics... and then goes so fast until it sounds like some motorcycle. Then ends with a cool sound. :)

I like Daft Punk - Discovery is one of my all-time favorite albums.

I have almost the exact opposite reaction to you. When I first got it about a month ago, I loved it, especially Robot Rock. But it's kind of "ungrown" on me since then. Not bad, but could have been better. To me, Robot Rock pretty well encapsulates techno for me - a really interesting riff that just gets stretched out far too long. Without vocals or other interesting changes, these songs really should be shorter - 3 minutes tops. After that, it just starts getting repetitive. I recognize that in clubs, the repetitiveness is kind of the point. On CD, though, it just kills the song too often for me.

I haven't listened to it for a month yet... :) Maybe the same will be true. I can see what you mean by the repetitiveness. Depends on if it gets too annoying...

Least expected thread ever (at least I thought).

I've got all three albums. Now it probably has something to do with whichever album you heard first, but Homework is definitely my favorite of the three. It took a month or two for me to warm up to Discovery, but I'd give it a 7 or 8. Harder Better Faster Stronger is a good song.

The new album is a little over the top. Seems pretty static to me and I don't think it's anything that I'd play at a party - not very easy to dance to.

I don't follow. Has there been talk about Daft Punk and other techno groups before?

I liked Discovery, but after seeing that Interstella 5555 DVD, it put the CD over the top as one of my favourites. Something has to be said for a CD where the music (from beginning to end, in track order) can be made into a decent movie with no speaking. :)

I listened to all of Homework after Discovery, so maybe that's whyI don't like it as much.

nah, more just a riff on your online sleuthing skills (and obviously not a very good riff at that).

As long as we're on the subject of techno, I'll pimp another one of my favorite (lesser known) albums. A French group called Cassius and the album is 1999. Cassius is pretty well-known over in Europe, but I'd be surprised if too many people heard of them on this board.

If anyone wants a sample I can post an mp3 from the CD.

Discovery was my first exposure as well, and I too like it more than Homework. There's some great tracks on Homework (including Alive...which is great background music for...well, nevermind), but Discovery is just incredible from beginning to end.

Never heard of the Interstella thing. what up with that?

a good one. La Mouche and Mr Everyready being my faves. I also really like I'm a Woman from Au Reve, but I'm not as fond of that album as a whole.

You want some good background music for...well, nevermind, Underworld/ Beaucoup Fish. You'd better have speed and stamina though.

I'm impressed. Seeing guys liking techno may possibly negate Bubba's presence on this board for me.

well, it was really more dumb luck than anything else. I think I heard the I'm a Woman somewhere (commercial?) and found that on a p2p, then around the same time saw the 1999 album in a used CD store and picked it up. I'm normally not that hip...

MY suggestion, btw, would be William Orbit's Strange Cargos III. Not really techno...but I think it would appeal to listeners of this type of music. Of course, every person I've ever recommended it to has not liked it, so maybe it's just me.

also, haven't really given it enough of a listen yet, but the new LCD Soundsystem CD seems like it's pretty cool

Is Cassius the guy with a song called "Crazy legs?" If so, I've heard of him, but not many of his songs.

The Interstella 5555 DVD is a movie (the first four music videos for the Discovery CD are the beginning of the movie) that uses the whole CD as the... everything. heh. No words, just the music and animation, and it still manages to make sense. I found 1 copy at a store here, so a BestBuy should have it.

I'm a huge Daft Punk fan. I simple ADORE the first two albums (Homework & Discovery). However I have to say that the 3rd one has been a big let down.

Hey, a band me and DK have in common!

I was on board with Homework, but a lot of my friends who won't listen to anything until it's on TV, in commercials etc, simply couldn't handle Homework when Discovery had been their first exposure to the band. I don't think Discovery was worse, but it was clearly much poppier. "Digital Love" was probably the standout track, IMHO.

I'm listening to the newest album for the first time right now... I'm keeping my expectations low as I haven't heard the greatest reviews.
