OK, the eNFL has run into a bit of a math problem concerning free agent salaries. basically, we borrowed the IHOF model where:

"Free Agent Bonus Requirement: Every free agent contract offer with a total value exceeding 10% of the current salary cap must include at least 20% in bonus money."

I accidentally stumbled onto an interesting case where this forumla proves to be problematic, and in trying to work it out, got caught in some bizarre algebra problem while drunk.

If anyone who knows math can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

I'm sure the eNFL rules committee will figure this out shortly, but I'm drunk and impatient, dammit, and want someone to check my math!

I really don't see the alleged problem.

original offer:
Signing bonus: $2,000,000
year 1 salary: $1,000,000
year 2 salary: $4,000,000
year 3 salary: $5,000,000

REVISED based on 20% rule:
Signing bonus: $2,400,000
year 1 salary: $1,000,000
year 2 salary: $4,000,000
year 3 salary: $5,000,000

Bump the bonus from 2.4 to 2.5, and "problem" solved. Am I missing something?

If the "problem" is that you're just ignoring the fact that adding to the bonus also adds to the value of the total contract ... well, the solution is "don't do that."

Hope that helps.

If it's easier for you, use mojo's formula -- your bonus has to be at least 25% of the sum of the salaries. That will always get you 20% of the total in bonus.

yes, as i suspected, it was me who was wrong the whole time.

i understand it now. but im glad i asked. im sure i wouldnt have been the only one messing up such a seemingly simple math problem.

and sorry for attributing it to ihof, but i thought thats where it came from. maybe it just came from discussions you guys had there, but never implemented (which based on my frustration last night, was probably a smart idea).

Yes, IHOF discussed all this stuff, including a rule very much like that. To date, no rule has been adopted, as I recall.
