In a move that figures to provide his defense with the same aggressive mindset that his offense has always possessed, University of Hawaii coach June Jones has hired former NFL head coach Jerry Glanville as his defensive coordinator.
The addition of Glanville, who hasn't coached at any level of the game since the 1993 season, will be officially announced on Tuesday.
Despite his penchant for self-promotion, and a style that generally draws more attention to his well-documented eccentricities than to his team and its performance, Glanville will represent a major upgrade for the Hawaii defense. The unit statistically ranked 117th out of the 118 Division I programs in 2004 and, for Jones to nudge his successful program to the next level, the defense must improve.

There defense better improve because without Timmy Chang that team is going nowhere.

This has been rumored/clamored for by the Hawaii fan base (or at least the people active on the Hawaii sports boards) for awhile. Believe it or not, they didn't have a defensive coordinator the last season or two.
Interesting to see how they will pay for Glanville, as the state is apparently strapped for cash and coaches salaries are an issue at the university...

U of Hawaii is starting to become a retirement community for old coaches.

Pay him? He's coaching in Hawaii, for cripes sake!
This is a win/win for him. How much worse could they be than 117 out of 118?

Wasn't his specialty offense? Should be interesting to see how that works out for the 'Bows...

As long as he isn't on television.

They should have a Glanville/Buddy Ryan co-D Coordinator position and require them to be miked at all practices and games.

This was taken from coachglanville.com (http://coachglanville.com/) ::snicker:::
Glanville began his NFL career as a special teams coach and defensive assistant with the Detroit Lions from 1974 to 1976. He joined the Atlanta Falcons in 1977 as a defensive back coach and then server as defense coordinator (1979-82), and was responsible for the Falcons' dogged defense, nicknamed the "Grits Blitz."
Glanville joined the Buffalo Bills for one season and then joined the Houston Oilers in 1984 as defensive coordinator, becoming their head coach in 1986.

Well, Hawaii ain't cheap. And it isn't exactly an easy trip to see family and friends. Hawaii has a very difficult time attracting and retaining mainlaind recruits for these reasons...

Wasnt Glanville just begging for the job at the Citadel? Len Pasquarelli reported he was trying his best to get a job at a tiny school. Apparently no one anywhere had interest in him as a HC.

Well, I disagree with that. Timmy Chang is the most inconsistant QB, the only time he looked good was the last 3 or 4 games of this season. I would rather have Chris Rix than this fool. Jack Rolovich will be an upgrade at QB.
As for Glanville, well only time will tell.

Dola.
It's not like Hawaii's defense could get any worse.

He also interviewed at Northern State University...which is in my hometown of Aberdeen, South Dakota...which was very very weird. He withdrew his application about a week later. Can you blame him though? Hawaii...South Dakota. Hawaii...South Dakota.

the ESPN article mentions that Jones succeeded Glanville in Atlanta. what it doesn't mention is that Jones worked under Glanville...twice - as a QB coach in Houston and as an assistant head coach in Atlanta. That's gotta be a bit of a tough pill for someone with Glanville's ego to swallow.
