This makes no sense to me. Your whole business is delivery so why add a delivery charge? Just raise the price of the pizza and clean up on walk in business which has to be small anyway.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Domino's Pizza stores in the area will begin charging a $1 fee for every order starting next week.

The president of Team Washington, which owns 59 Washington-area Domino's stores, said higher prices for gas, rent, insurance and food supplies are to blame.

David Carraway said the company is not happy with the decision but it's the reality of what it is dealing with.

The additional fee does not apply to all Domino's locations around the country, however.

An e-mail from the corporation in response to an inquiry said that the fee is in place in 45 percent of the stores across the country, particularly in high cost, urban markets. The fee is not imposed by the corporation, but is set by franchisees.

Customers are told of the extra charge when ordering.

Some other competitors are already charging a fee in D.C. Pizza Hut charges an average of 75 cents for delivery, the Post reported.

Papa John's said it does not charge a delivery fee but isn't ruling it out. A spokesman for Papa John's said if fuel prices continue to rise, the company might consider it.

Domino's pointed out that although drivers are paid in wages and per trip, they must purchase their own fuel. A company spokeswoman encouraged generous tips.

I hate to say it, but this would factor into my tipping. I'm sorry, but the tip is essentially the delivery charge.

Almost every pizza place here charges a delivery fee, it seems like. They're only hurting their drivers as people will definitely tip less, if at all, due to the fee. And while I understand that the driver never sees the money from the fee, it's a consequence of it anyway.

Agreed. If the pizza is $7.99, I'm paying the driver $10. If the pizza is $7.99 and there's a $1 delivery charge, I'm paying the driver $10.

Whats the big deal? They have had a dollar delivery charge around here for years. They said it went straight to the delivery person so i just stopped tipping as much. I figured it was like when gratuity gets added to your bill when you have a party of 6 or more at a restaurant.

The bad thing about a delivery charge is if they don't deliver the pizza even remotely on time. It took almost 3 hours to get a pizza one day, and the place is 5 minutes from my apartment. He said he couldn't find anywhere to park the first 2 times he came by, so he took it back until his next run. I still got charged a delivery fee for it.

Just one practical thought -- if you are a local Domino's franchise, you are (in essence) having your prices dictated by the headquarters, in sizable part. If they promote, through national advertising, a certain pizza at $9.99... how would you feel about just arbitrarily adding a buck to that because you don't like selling at that price. You're probably within your legal rights to do so (depends on your franchice agreement) but as a practical matter, you'll have pissed of customers who believe you lied to them. At least with a separate charge, you can claim you are honoring the nationa promotions.
