Okay before I begin, back story

My old PA English teacher in high school is a great guy. Amazing teacher, and just genuinely funny. His problem was he acted like kids in regards with what he said. He coached girls volleyball and apparently a girl took his jokes the wrong way and he was forced to resign. This was this year.

This leads me to today ..

I am on my way to class when I stop off for Dunkin Donuts. Upon entering I notice a guy staring at me but I don't think too much about it. I order my donuts (three cholcolate w/ sprinkle, pix later) and feel a gaze on me. I see him out of the corner of my eye behind the counter, taking drive thru orders. I finally turn around and look at him and realize it is my former teacher. So, now I am feeling awkward. I don't want to start talking to him thus letting everyone know he is my former teacher, and I figured he wanted it that way since he saw me first and didn't start the conversation. It's obvious he is embarrassed with his new job because of all the support he had, and I feel for him.

But honestly, it has never been more awkward then seeing the best English teacher I've ever had within a year go from teaching me to taking my order.

How else could I have gone about this?

Indeed. Yeah, I mean people kind of saw it coming because he acted like a kid with students and it cost him, but still, I don't recall any other teacher I've ever had who was as good as him in teaching any class, not just English.

i'm very good with seeing people before they see me, and if i don't want to talk to them i pretend i didn't see them and go on about my business.

in your case since it's obvious you both saw each other i would have said hello and probably said "nice to see you again" and quickly made my exit. i would think you not saying anything made it more awkward. if he didn't want you to see him he would have turned his back to you or something, but since he made it very obvious that he was staring at you he was probably embarassed but still wanted you to acknowledge him.

just my take.

Yeah. He kind of turned away but it was like in that little phase where you're about to say hello and you think to yourself, "maybe not a good idea?".

It was just a shame.

Yup. I try hard never to put myself in a position to be accused of something where it would be her word against mine, and if I really wanted to coach, I'd think long and hard before I took a job coaching a girl's sport. Hell, I even make my wife drive the babysitter home.

She was 14 at the time. We haven't had a babysitter that isn't my wife's parents in several years. Interesting story about the babysitter, actually. She was home-schooled, the perfect girl, etc. They put her in public school for high school, and in less than 2 years, she dropped out and got pregnant (by an illegal immigrant, no less). Now they're moving. Obviously, the babysitting gig is kinda over...well, actually, it's just starting, and it don't pay quite what we did!

Just out of curiousity, what was the comment the teacher made when he was forced to resign?

"I love the way your tits bounce when you spike, it makes my meat popsicle hard" might have crossed the line... Luckily we don't live in the 70s again.. everything would be sexual harassment in gym class what with the nut hugger shorts, porn moustaches and knee high gym socks..

I had an ex-brother in law who was forced to resign from his teaching position because one of his buddies sent him an dirty joke chain email. That sounds benign but what happened was that a female student of his was part of that email chain (the friend or my ex bro in law did not send the email to the student). Subsequently the student's mother saw the email and in that one in a million odds happened to notice my brother in law's email address. She then raised holy hell with the school superintendent and even though my ex bro in law did absolutely nothing wrong, they forced him to resign.

i live in NYC, not Kansas. everyone is a potential threat. the people who aren't alert at all times are the people you see on the evening news. i look at everyone. every person. of course i'm also checking out the ladies, trying to see what hot piece of ass/set of jubblies i can look at next, but yeah, i see everyone. and i see them before they see me because i'm actively looking at everyone, whereas the other person might be concentrating on something else.

i very much hate small talk, i can't stand it. i don't care about anyone outside of my circle. i don't care how your family is doing, how your weekend was or how your wife or kids are. i don't care. so rather than put myself in a situation where i have to ask the typical "small talk questions" i try to avoid it by making sure i don't run into anyone i don't want to talk to.

Although he make it it in unmistakable HA style, right here, the man has an extremely good point IMO.

And what he's talking about is a big part of the reason I was so ready to move out of Atlanta -- I grew tired of the state of alert you had to stay in; head-on-swivel even in a locked & gated parking garage kind of stuff, after a while you get used to it & it's automatic, but it wears on the mind & the nerves.

You feel safe in Monticello? I was riding through there last week, and there was some wierd kid standing on a street corner right outside the square, dressed in all black, with a bag in his hand looking strangly at the cars passing by. I couldn't help but think that was a school shooting waiting to happen.

I had an exteremyl awkward moment one time that was a bit more funny.

So I am at the frat house early on a friday morning shooting hoops. None else is up yet because we partied the night before and the other guys are a bunch of pussies. I notice my friends door open and he comes slinking out followed closely by a girl I know who is not his girlfriend. She totally does not have a bra on under her shirt and she is wearing a pair of his boxers.

I actually say out loud "Oh shit." It was just what popped into my mind. Their heads both snap to my direction and they look like they just got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. So now we are all staring at each other. Maybe off in the distance a dog barked. They weakly say "uh, hi" and I reply with "oh, umm, ... yeah" or something. It was an awesome little scene.

That was it, huh. Funny world we live in these days. We're reaching a point where a male teacher really shouldn't be anywhere near a female student without a female adult supervising - for his safety, not the students'.

Back in the '80s, when I was a reporter, there was a real case of sexual harassment at the local junior high. Coach walked in "accidentally" on a couple of girls showering. Not for the first time. My editor killed the story I wrote (which did not name the girl who complained, of course). At least he eventually got fired, but I still wasn't allowed to report it.

But that story is about as far from DeTox's teacher story as humanly possible. That teacher really needs to contact his union and see if he has recourse, if that's all he said.

I've been in kind of the opposite situation. One of the most popular teachers when I was in high school was found out (several years ago, and several years after I graduated) to have committed acts of pedophilia with a young boy. He was let off easy and allowed to retire. Of course the whole town knows about it, and he didn't have the sense to move away. Well, every now and then I see him, and he wants to be all friendly like it never happened (i.e. like he's not a huge freaking pervert). Creeps me out.

As a footnote, his wife was a teacher there too, and also had to retire because she knew about it and didn't say anything. As far as I know, they are still married.

DeToxRox
04-27-2005, 12:54 AM

DeTox and I both went to the same high school, but a few years apart. When I was there, a substitute teacher was let go because of some comments he supposedly made to a student, which were never verified, and most people believed were made up. So, I guess the school has a bit of a track record in this regard.

Well I definitely would be fired from that school. This happened just this week after practice, it was announced again by the head coach that the tournament starts this coming Saturday. It was listed on the schedule that was given out earlier, so the players were made aware of it.

A senior, who has played in 1 game this year and got to bat once and promptly struck out. Last year he played in 9 games, 9 at bats and 9 strikeouts. The kid asks before every game if he can DH, but he is just horrible, bad attitude and no athletic ability at all.
Anyway on Monday he says, "I have to work Saturday (at McDonald's) so I probably won't be able to make it." Head coach says "That is not a an excused absence." Kid shakes his head and mutters "not like I would have gotten to play anyway." Nothing is said, I just starred at him and he looked at me then look away.

Last night the head coach was out of town for business so I had practice, with the other two assistants. We had updated the stats sheet and brought it in for the kids to view. The aforementioned kid is looking at it with about 7 other guys and says "look at this, I have 1 at bat. How am I supposed to help the team with 1 at bat?"

[REWIND]

This kid and I have had had run-ins prior to this, his sophomore season he missed the first 5 games of the season because he had driver's ed in which he could have taken during the winter but chose to wait until the spring. After the 5th game he comes to practice and asked me if he was every going to get to play, I responded with something along the lines of how the hell are we supposed to play you when you do not come to the games.

[FAST FORWARD BACK TO YESTERDAY]

Now I was a little irritated that the track coaches decided once there track meet was cancelled to just up and leave the school while all their kids stayed and screwed around in the gym up until I told they have to leave because we have practice. The kid's statement pissed me off, "(name) maybe you could have helped the team by coming to practice and actually working on the things we teach for the last 4 years instead of screwing off. I'm sick of your bullshit, have you ever thought that you only have 1 at bat because you put no effort into this at all."

how is that not an excusable absence? the kid has to work. athletics should always take a back seat to anything in life. and this is high school baseball, not the major leagues - why isn't the coach allowing everyone to play?

when i played intramural basketball when i was a kid the starters were determined by who showed up at practice and put in the work. but regardless every kid got to play.

how is this guy supposed to have a good outlook on the team when he has only 1 AB? how is he supposed to have a "team first" mentality when the coaching staff - on a fucking high school team, mind you - can't find ways to get him to contribute. i don't blame the guy.

if he doesn't have the ability he shouldn't be on the team, so that's not an excuse.

He makes his own schedule at McDonald's, the kids know when the games are and when the potential tournament games are. Working, does not apply to an excused absence for football and basketball so why should it for baseball? I understand your opinion but when you go out for the team you make a choice, a committment. Baseball is actually considered the most lenient of the sports at our school when it comes to this stuff.

I invite you to come to practice and watch the effort the kid puts in. We are a small school and not allowed to cut players, the only program that is allowed is basketball and they have not had to do so in 8 years because we don't have the numbers. Also, this kid was told at the beginning of the season if his effort does not change from what it did last year he will see minimal playing time. Another kid was told the same thing, after the first 5 games he hadn't played yet either but he was putting in the work and is now a starter. He is probably a worse athlete than the senior is.

Why should we take playing time from kids that come to every practice, bust their asses and are willing to do what we ask of them?

EDIT: Let me add one more thing, we also play in two leagues almost every game is a league game. We are currently tied for first in both leagues.

because athletics, in the scholastic level, are not meant to win games, but to develope a sense of working within a team, channelling a competitve spirit to achieve goals and interacting with your peers - skills you should have if you wish to be successful in college, and obviously in the workforce.

So we should say "here, for slacking off all day we are going to reward you by allowing you to play and punish the kids that do try by having you play in their place." Which sadly sometimes reflects the real world.

Kids don't go out for sports just to play, they go out to for sports to win as well.

well, i meant he should have more than just 1 AB. that's silly and a waste of his time. he's not being asked to be a ballplayer, he's being asked to be a cheerleader.

whatever, i didn't mean to make a debate out of this. i guess the youth of today could be doing worse things.

I've never seen a sport at the high school level that just because you're on the team you are entitled to participate. My freshman year we had some obscene number of people on the JV baseball team, 30+ I decided after all the initial practices, scrimmages, etc that I wasn't going to be playing so I quit. I know several people that year that didn't get to play, and if they did it was very minimal amounts.

I don't disagree, having just 1 AB at this point is ridiculus and we have made note of it. Almost every game has come down to the last few innings and its been difficult to get him at bats in situations where it has not effected the team.

Last week we had decided that we are going to try to get him 1 at bat a game, more than likely in a situation where there are two outs in an inning with no one on and one of our worst hitters are already up. Problem is we have had 6 games cancelled since then.

I agree with a lot of what you have said but from the outside looking in it is very easy to be critical of how these things go.

Balldog and HA are both correct. High School Sports teams should make participation more important than winning games. however, participation in games should be tied to putting out in practice. If I ever become a football coach, I will have a rule that if you make every practice that week, you get to play in the game and if you don't make every practice that week, you cannot start.

Also, the way substiutions are handled in baseball make it much harder to give guys a little PT than it is in Football or basketball. You can just run a guy in their for a few plays. You are stuck with him.

What you guys are now forgetting is that some of the top HS Sports are now money makers for the school. Basketball and Football are big time income producers now.

I know in some areas Baseball and Wrestling bring in more than those two.

It's now not about the PT anymore, it's about who is going to get us to the playoffs and a bigger end of the year paycheck.

I know when we won the state football championship back in 91, our school received $50,000 +, and this was the difference for our Marching Band getting new uniforms, and paying for other things the school needed.

As long as money is involved, it's not going to be teaching what we are preaching here on this board.

I will admit, when I coached HS Football, it was about the heart of a man that would get the starting nod, even if there was someone else better at the position. I took a lot of flak from people on it, but I had the first winning team the school ever had, and I had one of the top defenses in the Region. I also had the respect of my players and they were willing to do a lot for me.

Which state did you win the title in, that is pretty cool.

I do not know about the economics of high school football, but I think that your example proves that you can win while providing the hard workers with a chance to play and feel like they contribute. I am not saying that the team should forego winning in order to insure that everybody gets the right amount of playing time. i am saying that everybody who does what i require gets to play in the game. Also, while i might not start my best players if they miss a practice that week, I am still going to play them extensively in the game.

I just don't want a kid to go through practice week after week and never get to experience making a tackle, or catching a pass, or even getting their dick knocked in the dirt in an actual game. I want his parents to be able to say that they saw their kid play.

One thing I hated in football was when there were different rules for the starters than for everybody else. One thing I loved in football was when you strapped on the pads and reputation didn't mean shit. A guy actually had to go on the field and produce. Every year we would invariably find at least one guy who nobody thought of as a good football player but who really had what it took when given the chance and an even playing field. I also loved it when meek guys would get blown up by somebody, because invariable the meek guy would figure out for the first time that its ok to get your bell rung and it doesn't hurt as much as you think. Someone can stick you and you can get up and play again. [edit to add that my QB would probably say "Hey JC, I already learned that lesson, so it is ok for you to go ahead and block these motherfuckers for me.]

Here in Utah, our game was voted as the #1 game of the year by USA Today too, we were ranked 5th in the nation as well. Timpview High School.

I could Al Bundy it big time here on that one...I have the ring, and the lettermans still, with the patches all over it.

Needless to say, for me, coaching wasn't putting food on the table and worked more effective while I was working at a flexible job. I also can't coach playing Semi-Pro ball, so I have to wait until I am done playing that in order to move into the ranks again. But once I hang the cleats up, I will be there.

I have one Dynasty that I will be writing on when this season is over in Semi-Pro......I will be attempting to join the ranks of an AFL team here. Salt Lake City is getting their AFL team next year and they will have open tryouts in September, I am going to try and get my 30 year old ass out on that field and get paid for the sport I love....

So last night the aforementioned kid comes to BP and makes contact with probably 2 out of the 30 pitches and gets to bat in the Top of the 6th.

Here is how it went:

First Pitch - Ball 1
Second Pitch - Hits him in the ass, but wait the ump says he didn't make an effort to get out of the way. So it counts as a ball, kid says "how can I get out of the way the ball it me in the ass!" Kid has a big ole ass. Ball 2
Third Pitch - Strike 1
Fouth Pitch - Strike 2
Fifth Pitch - Strike 3

Mind you the events of the 2nd pitch were quite funny. :)

He then warms up the right fielder, and on his way back to the dugout someone in the crowd says "Good job (name)!" He says, "You know I'd hate to see what I could do if they would give me a chance."

Errr 0 for 2, 2 strikeouts...oh well.
