OT: CPU Power Supply Troubles

Hi all,

It would appear my wife shorted our PC today, though neither of us is exactly sure how. She was checking her email when poof, it turned off. The tower is open, so I believe she hit a bit of static electricity and shorted the power supply.

Can anyone help me with the cost of repairing this, or ways to go about it? I'm open to suggestions. I'm not the greatest technical wizard, but I know my way around a little bit.

It may not be the P/S. If it is, there is a good chance that it could have damaged/destroyed other parts of the computer, especially if it shorted out. Its relatively easy/cheap to replace the P/S, so you might wanna go that route first, especially if you think it is the P/S

What else could have been damaged? I'm curious as to what your thoughts are.

I think it's the PS because the keyboard and mouse are powered down too. I may end up taking it in somewhere for them to look at, but we'll see.

Well, is it a newer computer? A good number of newer computer have LED's on the motherboard that come on if you have power. Also, when you turn the powersupply on does any of the fans come on? Also, try taking a sniff around the powersupply, and inside your case. This would be the easy way to tell if something burned up. As burned electronics has a terrible odor. Basically, if something happened to the P/S, it could have done bad things to the computer. Im not saything that it did, and you have no way of knowing. If you really suspect the P/S, its not difficult to change, I would reccomend something in the 450 watt range. However, if the P/S took out your motherboard, it wont do you any good to replace it. You may just be better off taking it too a shop for repair, unless you have some swap hardware.

I had a "similar symptom" and it ended up that I managed to disconnect the ground from the motherboard (in my laptop). It's happened 3 or 4 times, despite fixing (my computer is almost literally held together with duct tape), and every time, I re-solder the connection.

Not saying this is necessarily your problem, though you should try to figure out if it's isolated tothe power supply or if it's somewhere else. There are a bunch of possibilities...
