Griswalds bound for Australia?
Posted on Fri, 27-May-2005

A few years back - and I remember reading about it in a trade - the brother's Warner were toying with the idea of plonking The Griswalds in a Down Under jaunt. It never happened.

Now, insider 'Jack' - who I had a chinwag with for quite a spell last night, he's known SNL funnyman, Chevy Chase for a long time living close to Chase, his wife and daughters in Upstate NY - has some details on a possible new "Vacation" sequel that may be in the works, and it may indeed be the using same stencil of everything Aussie.

"He [Chevy Chase] is attracting attention from younger agents and studio execs who grew up with him with some pegging him for a major comeback. There have been discussions about a new Vacation movie in which The Griswalds end up marooned in the Australian outback or trapped in a Latin American banana republic".

Apparently, Eric Idle - who had a role in "European Vacation" - wrote a script for "National Lampoon's Vacation Down Under" in 1987, but Chase passed on it.

"Chase thought the script too aligned with the love affair the US had with Australia then...well we were obsessed with ALL things Aussie in the mid 1980s....even Jacko!", says our scooper. "Chase really didn't want to do another Vacation film at that point, given his disappointment with the 1985 sequel..listen to his commentary on the Special Edition DVD.".

"According to some reports some of Idle's script may be used in the new script....but not all of it", he adds.

Part of that script is said to believe a cameo by Paul Hogan as the iconic Crocodile Dundee.

"In 2001 Chase co-hosted a TV talk show 'Live with Regis and Kelly', filled in for Regis Philbin and Paul Hogan was on promoting 'Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles' the two discussed the Vacation Down Under project and Chase mentioned that it might indeed happen".

Talks have since erupted again, says the scooper, with Chase likely to sign on should said script meet his approval.

The last "Vacation" film starring Chase was "Vegas Vacation". Randy Quaid starred in a "Vacation" spin-off a year or so back caled "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2 - Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure" but that was about as painful as a needle between the eyebrow.

Clark better be a grandfather by now. Chevy Chase with his kids still the same age as before ain't going to cut it.

Wasn't Eric Idle from Monty Python?

He's the guy in European Vacation that gets hit by Clark while he's riding a bike.

This series has gotten progressively worse, so I wouldn't expect much from a new one. The Vegas one was horrible.
