View Full Version : PING: Southern Michigan/Northern Indiana Folks

This Saturday I'll be driving from Chicago to Port Huron on my way to Ottawa. Clearly at some point I'll be on I-69 going East to Port Huron, but before that, I have two choices:

1. I-80/90 directly East from Chicago until it hits I-69.

1. I-94 NorthEast from just southeast of Chicago until it hits I-69.

Any preference? I know I-80/90 is a tollway, and I've driven it before, seemed pretty fast, but I-94 seems a bit more direct.

I would definitely take 94 over 80/90. It's always been fast and it is more direct. Just be careful where you stop for gas (wait until Kalamazoo).

Also, 69 is the better option over 94 right now once you get to Marshall. I was on 94 in Detroit a couple of weeks ago, and the construction detours are pretty horrible.

Go to www.aaatraffic.com for construction info on Michigan roads. I-94 is generally faster but there is construction through a bunch of it as well.

94 is a MESS -- A HUGE MESS right now.

80/90 is just not a very nice road (too much all concrete construction).

I think your damned either way. Good luck :p

Is the construction on I-94 West or East of 69? If it's all just East of 69, then it's not a problem, as I'm not going on that part of the road?

As long as I have lived on God's green(?) earth, I-94 has been a mess in the Detroit area.

It's mostly Detriot metro area, but there still some bridge/overpass work around the lake, and a couple of spots of single lane travel around Kalamazoo, but you get that on most interstates these days.

I think we'll take I-94 to I-69, then, as we'll be on that road mostly from 5-7 Saturday morning.

If you're out that early, most of the 94 construction zones shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Watch the signs around Lansing...to stay on 69, you have to "exit".

If you miss it, you'll be halfway to Grand Rapids before you realize you're going in the wrong g**d*** direction.

/has happened to both me and my wife on separate trips. :)

The other thing to watch for is the fact that 69 North becomes 69 East at Lansing (I think there's signs to that effect). It's the only odd-numbered interstate that actually goes East/West, as far as I know.

Lansing *is* tricky - I remember ending up going in circles there.

I 94 is the way to go. Besides avoiding the tolls on I 80 the speed limit in Michigan is 70. I didn't think Lansing was all that complicated but I guess having I 69 and I 96 around there could cause some problems. Plenty of fireworks and nudie bars in the indiana part of your journey. Just follow the numerous billboards. I also have never seen a cop with anyone pulled over on that stretch of road. So feel free to drive like your still in Illinois there.

Hey, I don't have any tips to add, but I drive from Chicago to Detroit or Grand Rapids a lot, and right as I get on to 94 from 80/90, I see a billboard ad that makes me want to post here. It's for a restaurant in Valparaiso called Don Quijote, which probably interested me because I really liked the book. But anyway, it claims to be the only Spanish restaurant in Indiana, which I find really hard to believe. SUrely there has to be another Spanish restaurant in Indiana, like maybe in Indianapolis or something?
