When not needing to go the bathroom (#2 only) yet its been awhile...
get your favorite bathroom reading and take it into the Living room, dining room, etc. somehwhere except the bathroom....
read...
Does this trigger a feeling of needing to go to the bathroom (#2) where you would continue your read?

And do you leave the reading material in the bathroom when you're done, or take it back out with you?
There's a guy I work with who takes the office copy of the WSJ in with him, and then brings it back out. Ick. I have since subscribed to the online version.

I need to add that my main reading when in the bathroom is Newsweek so in this case it was Newsweek I was reading in the Living Room when it was triggered THUS I wonder if it also has the variable of what the readin material is in comparison to the normal reading material that is read when in the bathroom. hmmmmm

I hardly read when taking shits. It actually depends, in college I'm too lazy to keep magazines around or in the bathroom, so I just look at the wall and be done with it. At home, maybe there will be an SI laying around, but I don't take long enough shits to read entire articles so I just flip through.

We don't exactly have community reading material around here. If I take something to the can, it's something I've printed off the web (and then I trash it when I'm done) or a book or magazine I'm reading. Either way, I'm not passing it around.

you have evolved...I still continue to start articles only to run into the "do I finish the article" dilemma. I have read the first half of sooo many articles I could write a book on them...you have evolved.

Got ya beat. One of the men's restrooms here is off a well-trafficked hall. The sink is immediately inside the door. Plenty of times while I'm walking down the hall, I hear the flush and the door open with no sink running. The break room/kitchen is immediatley next door. This is why I don't eat ANYTHING put out at work.

You're a woman. I'd be seriously turned off by a chick who reads while taking a dump. The fact that women even take dumps is antithetical to the very essence of a woman, so reading and dumping is out of the question.

I was being a bit melodramatic there, in case you couldn't tell. So no, you're not supposed to hold it. But you're not supposed to read while you go, either.
My whole point goes back years. I can remember in high school, a bunch of us would be gaga over the hottest chicks in school, then someone would inevitably suggest thinking about [fill in her name] taking a dump, and it was nearly impossible to do. That, or if you conjured up the image, it completely ruined the moment. Women and dumping just don't go together. That said, I understand the science behind it all, thanks!

06-22-2005, 05:12 PM
think, after all of the years of men being able to read while dumping and women NOT being able to read while dumping the knowledge skew could be seriously off....To catch up, Women. I suggest you read while dumping. You wouldnt want to fall further behind.

Now there is the question: Why do some people just have to take a dump every time they go to the library? What is it about being surrounded by books that causes a bowel movement? My wife and I have puzzled this for years.

In 5th grade, my teacher was telling us about the importance of taking every chance to further your education. She provided the example of her son who, when in medical school, put up charts on the back of the bathroom door so that he could be studying every chance he got. Since then, I have been an avid reader.
Having said that, my trigger seems to be music stores, specifically Tower Records. Whether in Tempe, Boston, or Philadelphia, being in the Tower triggers a need to dump...and of course they don't have public restrooms.

I put copies of pictures from Netter's Guide to Anatomy around my bathroom my first year. Anatomy almost kicked my butt.
Edited to add: In regards to the original question: No, I've never had any reading material stimulate my bowels.

I'd stay away from any rubber bands on his desk then...
or is that just me that does that?
I hate when I have to take a crap and I'm completely out of reading material. I'll start running around the house in that heightened sense of desperation looking for anything to read. I'll grab a takeout menu or one of my kids' school books if I have to.

I thought it was a well known fact that something in paper (chemicals from manufacturing process?) that triggered going to the bathroom (#2) response for most people - not the same level of response for everyone...........obviously, libraries have lots and lots of paper so the reaction from libraries are more noticeable.
I am not very sensitive to this phenomenon, but my wife is.

its actually a chemical pheromone that is given off by paper products as I recall. SOmething about the chemicals used to make printing papers is released by the paper all through its lifespan and its the smell that gets you, not the act of reading. Wish I could remember where I saw that....
NoMyths
06-22-2005, 10:18 PM
I've never heard the chemical explanation before, but offhand I think it's a pantload. I'd go with the Pavlovian explanation before the other.
Hell, I'm a writer who spends much of the day surrounded by paper, and I don't find myself constantly compelled to crap.
