Errr......must resist getting this game until the weekend.
I even have this week off! Fucking school!
Did I read somewhere that in the RFTH mode you don't do the recruiting? If so, does the AI do a reasonable job of doing it?
I hate doing recruiting, so this game might be interesting to me if this is the case.

Got the game yesterday, after we got back from a 2 day family vacation.
I am seeing huge differences between this and 2005. It seems like the fun is back. After reading countless threads about how "this and that" is too easy, I think I'm liking that I'm a 36 year old who just doesn't have 48 hours a day to play this game - because I kinda stink and it therefore makes a victory that much more gratifying.
I'm waiting to receive my rosters before I begin a real dynasty with Maryland, so I decided to exercise the gaskets by playing a few "Play Now" games with them. My first was against Akron (8 min quarters, AA skill level, no other changes). My passing was mediocre (about 50%), but that's much better than last year when I had issues trying to get my QBs to 30%. I always focus on running the ball (though I apparently don't have the skills others do when it comes to this aspect of the game). I broke off an 80 yard run, but I was pretty much contained the rest of the game. We finally settled for a 21-3 victory. After the game, I noticed the offenses ran about 100 plays, so I'm thinking of bumping up the quarters to 9 minutes.
I then started hacking around to see if my defense was up to snuff against the rest of the NCAA, or was it merely Akron's offense that I was good against. So...I played a series of quarters or halves against other teams. Against Notre Dame, I was down 42-0 at halftime (OMG). They went up 14-0 on me and I fumbled the ensuing kickoff on the 3. It went from 7-0 to 21-0 in about 10 seconds :(. I could run nothing offensively - I have a trademark anemic offense, but that was ridiculous. Against Missouri, I was down 10-7 at halftime and I was obviously very much into the game.
As opposed to others, I'm not finding running the ball too easy. Kickoffs and punts you can sometimes see a seam to run through, but it depends a lot on the competition as well as my piss-poor controller skills. Overall, I'm loving the game and can't wait to start a dynasty when the rosters come in.
One thing I think is absolutely great: When you're playing a team that is light years above you when it comes to talent, you know you're going to have a huge struggle. But...the game FEELS like it as well. Hard to describe - but when I receive that first kickoff, and my team heads to the line of scrimmage, I'm thinking: "Ok, let's play within ourselves...no turnovers...let's try and stay close and who knows what might happen." On defense I'm thinking, "Bend but don't break, let's concentrate on not giving up the big play, let's hope for a turnover." If you try to match up against the superior teams, you'll quickly see the game fall apart. After giving up a big score, I almost have to pause it to think, "Ok guys...we're getting away from the gameplan, let's reel ourselves back in - there's plenty of time left, don't give up."
I know, lame. But it really feels like college football this way. :)

I do too. Well said, Craig :)
Well, I don't know how you feel in my dynasty games. However, yesterday, I tried one game with a lower ranked team - Rutgers. I wanted to make sure that the game wasn't too easy and that I was only winning because USC is SO good. Sure enough, I got away from my game plan and Rutgers was dominated by FSU. It was 63-7 at the end of the game and I felt like I worked hard for my lone TD.

Same here. Just lost to Kansas State in my dynasty (as FIU) 17-14. They got a last second field goal, because not only did I break my gameplan on offense, but also on defense ::ugh:: It was one of those games I wanted to pull my hair out.

what makes this game great is their over 100 teams in this game.
you can make the game challenging or easy depending what team you start off with.
i think so far NCAA 2006 has an edge over Madden 2005 because of the lack of running game by the cpu teams in Madden 2005.

I'm sitting here at work dreaming of more ways to get Reggie Bush the ball. Last night, I used him to lethal effect in the slot and I'm thinking up some new ideas now. I love the substitution packages.
Also, this is the first time I've ever wanted to export a graduation class to Madden. Unfortunately, he'll probably be drafted long before my Eagles pick. Of course, I'm still hoping I can convince Bush to come back for a Senior year, but that seems highly unlikely.

Mizzou- You mentioned some key recruits are coming to watch your game vs. Texas. Is there some screen I'm missing that tells you when the recruits are coming and thus, when I can pitch to them? What's been happening to me is I finish a game, advance the week, look at the recruiting screen and it's like "He enjoyed his trip last week." How am I gonna get these kids keg parties and hookers if I don't know when they show up? http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

When a recruit's interest gets high enough you'll have the option to schedule a visit for him. You do this by going to the recruit's info screen then you will see that you can click the right analog stick (on xbox) to schedule a visit. Another screen will pop-up that lists all of your home games. You just pick the desired game from the list. It appears you can reschedule them as well. (Might be useful if a key player gets injured or suspended prior to the game.)

I'm trying to figure out if it's better to schedule a recruit for a cupcake so you can surely win, or for a high profile team. Obviously if you win both games the high profile team would reflect better. But I wonder if he'd rather see us beating a weaker team or losing to a Notre Dame?

That is the interesting question. Surely, a win against a higher profile team is better than a win against a low profile team. However, is a close loss against a top team better than a win against a weak team? I don't know, but I don't plan on losing to Notre Dame or anyone else this year. However, when I eventually get bored with my USC dynasty and start with a challenging team (probably Rutgers) this will be a vital question.

While I'm at it, I skipped buying 2005 (a good move from all reports) so this discipline thing is new for me as well. Is anything that comes up going to be on the Program Standards page? I somehow have gone 6 weeks without anything coming up at Florida State.

Yeah, that's the page. Just make sure you check it every week, especially if you ahve assistance turned off. The NCAA doesn't really like it when you look the other way, especially on major violations. And I've heard that this year is imporved, but in 2005 once you got a good amount of NCAA interest it was all but impossible to get it lowered back down again.
And I never understood the idea of discipline points either. If my entire team needs to be suspended I should be able to suspend them regardless of my "discipline points". Oh well, I guess they had to make a game out of it somehow.

Don't know about the program standards page, but I get hit a lot with these disciplinary things. They seem to happen more often than in real life (depending on the program - ha!), but I see them as a way to counterbalance the advantage the human has over the CPU in recruiting and other aspects of the game.

I was experimenting with an Iowa dynasty and had Drew Tate get in trouble the first two weeks for minor things. I set his suspension to 1 quarter both times despite the default being 2 or 3 quarters. Then in week 3 he cheats on a test and whamo, nine games or the NCAA shows up. My advice: be tough up front.

I have my first in-season recruit coming to visit week 5 vs. Wyoming. I'm fired up for the game!
Has anyone else noticed that there are hardly ANY 5-star recruits now it seems? I didn't see one quarterback (of the in-season recruits) who is ranked at 5-star. 4-star is as high as they go in my season. Although I did see some 5-star players at other positions. I'll have to go back and see exactly how many total 5-star recruits there are right now.

I usually play as a SS or sometimes FS. And when I'm on defense I like the overhead view so that I can see the pass routes developing. Also, I like to shelter myself by making sure I don't have a deep zone somewhere as I tend to blow coverage. So I'll ply under on a three or play a "robber" role usually.

Dola. I love the fact that you can move the safeties up to the line this year! They added a lot of the pre-snap defensive controls from Madden 2005 which is awesome. Blitzing a weak side LB works quite well.

I let the Computer control the other positions. I always mess things up if I try to switch at the last second.

Generally, I find the player I control spazzes out and runs in circles. At the same time, physically I am scrunching up my toes and leaning backwards as I feel that helps me make the play.
Seriously, I suck at defense...if I can make 4 tackles a game with my controlled player I consider it a small victory.

I've thought about doing a dynasty, but keep balking for some reason. However, here is a little fun fact I just realized at halftime of a game...
My starting TE Byrd who is a great TE in his own right was injured. I just discovered that my Backup TE, Fred Davis, has 91 speed! He also has 84 hands. The amount of weapons I have is amazing. Of course, quite a few of them will likely go pro after this year :(

How? Same ol coverage audible?
I'm guessing you're asking about the safeties here, right? It you hit 'Y' (on xbox) and then down it changes to bump and coverage as it has done for a while now. If you do it twice, then not only will you be in bump and run, but both safeties will move up towards the line of scrimmage. You can also adjust some other things as well. From the manual:
COVERAGE AUDIBLES
If you're content with the front seven but would like to adjust only the secondary, call a coverage audible by pressing Y.
- After a coverage audible has been called, press up/down for loose/tight coverage. (Press down twice to bring the safeties up close to the line.)
- To play a 1 Deep, 2 Deep, 3 Deep, or 4 Deep Zone, pull and hold L or R, or press white or black respectively.
- For a man shift, press A; for Cover 2 Man, press X.
- To Man Up the receivers, press Y then A; pressing Y then moving R left or right when playing zone coverage shfts the safeties to the left or right.
Some of this stuff I haven't messed with yet (changes 1 Deep, 2 Deep etc) and some of it I have no idea what it even means. (man shift)
This is very similar to MAdden 2005, but not all of it works the same way. For example, shifting the safeties left or right doesn't physically move them on the screen as it does in Madden. (too bad) It just shifts their zone responsibilites which you can see with the coach cam.

I also just noticed that we get the audibles / hot routes for receivers to slant this year and for backs and tight ends to run block. And the best news?
If a run play is called, press digital left / digital right in the opposite direction the run play is intended to flip it without flipping the formation.
Woohoo!!!

Yeah, he isn't that good of a blocker, but the kid can catch and run :)
Notre Dame has been playing me tough with Darius Walker showing great moves as their impact HB and it was 35-25 going into mid 4th quarter, but Reggie Bush just had one of the coolest runs I've ever seen. I ran into the middle of the line, but nothing was open. So, I stutter stepped back, turned to the left sideline, and started running parallel to my offensive line. They held their blocks, but as I ran wide of them, I had two linebackers on my tail. However, Reggie had enough speed to get some seperation and then turn the corner and run 45 yards up the sideline! I don't think that play could have happened in any previous version where the difference in player's speed wasn't as readily apparent. Very cool run :)

Year 2 of my Cincy dynasty. My RB #23 who ran for like 1700 yards last year as a soph is still a beast. Suggestion for anyone who wants to play with Cincy, but sees there is no option QB. I used WR #89 at QB for the most part of the year because he has THP and THA at 80, and he has 90 speed. At the end of the year I changed him to QB and he only lost 4 OVR points (74 OVR).
Anyways, he got hurt in opening day loss to #3 Florida. Then I got killed by #6 Miami. Week 3 rolls around, and midway through the 2nd quarter against Boston College I am down 35-0. I stick to my gameplan and use my impact RB #23 and keep barrelling over people, score 2 TDs and at halftime it is 35-14. I give up 2 TD in the 2nd half but at the same time I score 5 myself so I come back from 35 down to take it into OT 49-49. I score RB #23's 7th TD of the game and I am up 56-49 before picking off BC's QB on 3rd down to win!
Very exciting game!
Oh, and I don't have a sharkport, thus why I keep calling everyone RB #23 etc, even though I did computer generate names. Thus, I don't have a problem with Chris Leak being Harvey Lang and stuff.. :)

I just learned a valuable but costly lesson about in-season recruiting. I was in the lead to get the #1 HB in the nation, and I figured he might start with Bush and White likely to both leave after the season. Anyway, in week 7, I earned the opportunity to invite him to a home game. I looked at all of the games, and decided on UCLA which was the biggest home game I had left. The only problem was that it is in week 15. He's now told me that he thinks I'm forgetting about him waiting so long to schedule the official visit. I've dropped to 3rd on his list and he is visiting Florida State and Virginia Tech in the next 2 weeks :(

another cool thing about NCAA 2006
is the coach mode. itr doenst have a coach mode option like madden does.
but you can still do it for ncaa 2006. just call the play and hike the ball and dont touch anything. it will excute the play for you. it works on offense and defense. only thing you have to do on your own is the kicks, punts , field goals, and extra point yourself.
its a great way to play for pure coach mode. Ratings of players will mean a lot more.
i think i start a dynasty in coach mode and one in arcade mode where i use my gamepad.
both ways a lot of fun.

I was starting to worry that the CPU running wasn't effective enough before my last two games. Last game Notre Dame's RB beat us up fairly good. Now, this week Washington's RB, Kenny James is tearing us up. He has 16 carries and 152 yards in the first half! Furthermore, Washington's two defensive impact players are shutting down our passing and containing Reggie Bush. If Washington's QB hadn't thrown 2 interceptions, we'd be losing. As it is, we are only up 17-14 at halftime in my most exciting game this dynasty so far.

I've dropped to 3rd on his list and he is visiting Florida State and Virginia Tech in the next 2 weeks :(
I learned a more valuable lesson. Don't forget to do in-season recruiting before you play week 1. I forgot, and now for my second season I have 0 recruits to look at... http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif

No, it is. In that OT BC game where I was describing my 56-49 victory earlier, while my primary back ran for 301 yards on 52 carries (sorry but my starting QB is hurt and the others SUCK!), the BC back ran for 215 yards on 16 carries. http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif

Kenny James finished with 35 carries for 252 yards as we contained him in the second half by stacking 8 and 9 men in the box. Fortunately, Washington's QB was really horrid and didn't make us pay for stacking the box. He even threw an interception to my DE in the 4th quarter. My DE rumbled 25 yards for the TD!
My soft commit, the best SS in the nation, signed today after we beat Washington 42-17. He said that he liked our record (7-0). Now, I have his points to go towards the other recruits. :)

My roomie rented the game yesterday, we played a H2H game tonight. He won 59-38, I was Bowling Green and he was TCU. By his choice the level was on Varsity, please tell me on the AA and Heisman level that there is a defense in the game. His QB played like John Elway, it was not fun at all. Last year he beat me only one time, usually he couldn't score.
Regardless, as of right now I am planning on picking this up tomorrow afternoon.

On AA, there is a decent defense, but speed guys can really blow open a game. On Heisman level from what I've heard, the defense is quite tough.

I opened with BC in my BYU dynasty and LV Whitworth tore us up too, he ran for over 200 and picked up no fewer than 6 drive extending first downs on third and 3 or more!!! The good news is the new offense scored 38 points and Todd Watkins is unstoppable, but we had 5 turnovers and still lost the game.
The really funny thing is this poor run defense carried over into my next game against freakin Eastern Illinois, we were down 21-17 in the second quarter (at home) and making their Tailback look like Reggie Bush. Finally it seems the Defense regained their composure and we pulled away to a 59-28 win. I am really liking the way it seems like momentum has an effect in the game, EIU was playing out of their minds and BYU was sloppy and flat. Once we got up by a couple scores though it seemed like EIU slowed down, almost like they gave it all they had and then just gave up......Only 2 games into it, but this is already tons better than 2005 IMO...

i was skimming thru it in the store and notice each college team is set to run a certain % and pass a certain % for offense and defense.
so there will be some teams that love to run a lot and some teams that will pass a lot.
or that % for run and pass on offense and defense for sims games only?

Uhhh...I'm pretty much getting beat, and beaten bad each game. I'm thinking (hoping) some of it has to do with the controller - I'm not used to the O button switching players on the PS2. I think I'm going to look at changing the controller around today, though I love that the X button is ALWAYS sprint, even when the QB has the ball.
I have to be honest this game is pretty good and alot better then 05. I love the fact that you can notice big time players during game play. I am talking about non-impact players not the impact players... I have one impact OLB(#34) and another OLB(#83) who is a stud. Now #34 wrecks all kinds of havoc when they run a play on his side... but #83 is pure LB in the mold of LT big hits for everyone in his path. We are in the 7th game of the season he has hurt 3 people who were out atleast 3 weeks. Good Game.
Well, I started my first RFTH dynasty as a RB. I'm far from a joystick jockey, so during the summer camp I didn't impress too much but I did get a scholarship to Maryland. Wish you had more than 3 choices...
My plan is to have Corso call the offensive plays and I'll call the defensive plays. The only players I'll control is my HB and sadly the kicker. (Note: I now know why Corso isn't a coach anymore...he sucks.). I plan on playing RFTH for 4 years and then transition my RB into a coach. Not sure how this works, but according to the game you can do chose to become a coach instead of going to the NFL.
First game was against Navy. I started with 9 minute quarters and all penalties but Face Mask maxed. Maryland won 61-0. Three of our touchdowns were punt returns, which I'm assuming is highly unusual. My RB ran the ball 21 times for 97 yards and 1 TD. I'm much better running to the outside, but Corso kept calling plays up the middle and I tried to follow the play designs as much as possible.
Second game was against Clemson and this was a more even matched game. I decided to move the quarters down to 8 minutes, but kept everything else the same. Clemson came in with a high powered offense and a QB who had thrown for 424 yards in his previous game. Our defensive backs sucks, so the pre-game guys thought we'd get lit up. For the first 3 quarters it was a close but high scoring game. We went into the 4th quarter tied at 35-35. Clemson's quarterback choked in the 4th quarter and threw 3 picks. Maryland ended up winning 52-35. My RB ran 24 times for 138 yards and 1 TD. Both QBs went over 400 yards.
Third game was against WVU. They came in with a very good RB, but we were slight favorites because of our passing game. They kept it close with solid defense, but Maryland won 28-17. My RB rushed 22 times for 165 yards and 1 TD. The WVU RB rushed for -2 yard total on 25 carries. He broke off a couple 10 yard runs, but they kept snapping directly to him in the shotgun and my DEs kept throwing him for 3-4 yard losses on that play.
Overall, I thought the game was quite an improvement over last year. I don't know if the graphics were better, but the player movement seemed improved a lot to me. It looked like they added a few new things to give it a more realistic look.
Penalties: I was getting a good number of holding and clipping calls, but not a lot of other stuff. I might even turn the clipping and holding down a little (maybe to 3/4) and bring the face mask up to that level as well.
Running game: I've only played 3 games, but I'm not seeing an improved running game from the computer that others have mentioned. Maybe it's Maryland's Defense or something, but no back has rushed for more than a dozen or so yards against us yet. I thought the WVU RB would because the pre-game show hyped him a lot and he's pretty highly rated, but nada. I might try tweaking this a little if it continues.
Passing game: Much better than last year, but still needs work. Not seeing tons of drops and while playing the completion percentage seems reasonable. The yards per attempt seems too high, but my perception of that might change with a few more games. Not sure if I can tweak this in the sliders or not.
The punt returns I experienced in my first game appeared to be a fluke or just an incredible matchup problem for Navy. I haven't seen any other punt return touchdowns since the 3 during the first game.
So far, even with the couple issues I've noticed, the game is a ton of fun and I'm having a blast. I like the direction it's going with the RFTH option, although it could use more work. I'm looking forward to checking out the coaching/recruiting portion of the game as well.

Got the game the other day. Took a few games to get used to the controls (They switched the "Change to closest defender" and "Sprint" buttons on defense. Messed me up a lot during the first couple of games).
I decided to go with the RFTH mode as a change of pace (plus it'll give me a reason to play every game instead of 1 or 2 and simming the rest. :) ). I'd say it's been fun and better than the previous NCAA's.
I am going with the LB as a real challenge. Don't know how well I'll need to do in order to win the Heisman, but I really don't have any expectation of doing it. I do want to try and win as many defense awards as I can though.
After a few tune up games, I started a RFTH game. I went to Michigan who were #7 at the time (The LB drill was incredibly easy). Won my first game vs Northern Illinois rather easily. Second vs. Notre Dame was a back and forth game. Went up quickly 7-0, but then found myself down 17-7 at the half. My defense settled down and my offense picked it up and dominated the second half, winning 34-17.
A big reason for the fast turnaround was me! (as in Me in the game). At 17-14, they throw an out to their TE. I was covering the other TE (2 TE on my side of the formation) who ran a fly pattern. It was thrown, I stopped and ran to the target. After the TE catches and turn I destroyed him and caused a fumble (which we recovered). Next drive, 21-17 now, another throw, I deflect the pass and it's intercepted (I had this happen in the game vs. N. Illinois too). Next drive, it's now 28-17. A pass to their RB is picked off by me.
Wouldn't say I've been a dominating force though (7 tackles, 1 sack after 2 games). Just have been in the right place at the right time a lot so far.
So far so good for this years NCAA.

Is there a way to turn off the "auto-play" feature during the game? That is, when I start a passing play and I don't hit a button, he'll automatically throw to some random receiver. I got used to letting my QB auto-drop before I took over. But in NCAA it auto-drops, then auto-throws. Do I just need to get into the habit of doing the drop back manually to avoid this problem? :)

Craig, my advice is just get used to the new controls because they will likely be the same in Madden. I found it works nicely if your thumb is ALWAYS on the X button and then if you need to switch you slide it over and back very quickly.. that way I haven't gotten confused as much as I was Tuesday.
And like I said, you won't miss many tackles if you just run into the person with the ball instead of weakly diving at them.

I'm really starting to enjoy the passing more now. If you can tell your receiver is going to be open based on where the defenders are and throw right before or as he makes his cut it is working really well for me. This has always been the strategy or course, but last year's super DB's would find a way to make the play anyway. This year feels a lot mroe realistic.
Main problem I have right now is that I've yet to play a close game. In my Miss dynasty I've blown out three teams: Vandy, Memphis and The Citadel, with the Citadel being a 99-21 win! The other two games were wins of 50 popint margins or more. I also played #8 Tennessee and was whomped soundly 77-24. I'm loving the game, I just hope it doesn't stay too easy and too hard. A competitive game would be nice. =)

The Easypass feature is on by default. Just go to setting and change passing mode to normal. Then you'll have to hit X to hike the ball and X to bring up your receivers.
Also, what button brings down the passing icons and lets the QB run the ball?

Essentially, that's it. You'll be top-8, then they'll all cut their list first to top 5, then to top 3. Any of those points you can be left off this list, and you're out for that recruit.
The week they cut to top 3, you have the chance to schedule a visit and make a pitch. You can pitch them any of the standard ones - Prestige, Style, etc. Sometimes you'll have feedback about what they like before you make the pitch - not sure yet what causes it.
Just be sure you check/adjust the screen weekly. You have to actually look at the recruit in order to schedule the visit.

KevinYup. That's a pretty good description. I'm on my second season, and therefore my second iteration of in-season recruiting.
Here are some thoughts:
* When I pick my twelve, I only expect to go after 5 or 6 of them actively. Therefore I tend to pick the areas where I have the most needs and concentrate on them, targeting 2 or 3 players from the same position.
* The above strategy allows me to go for the slightly out of my league player, the player who I probably should go for, and the insurance policy player.
* After the first week I weed out the ones that I'm behind on and focus on the ones where I think I've got a good shot or am in the running. Those that I'm not pursuing will get 0 recruiting points unless I'm still in the running a week or two later.
* The earlier you can determine who you legitimately have a shot at signing, the sooner you can boost the recruiting points and gain an advantage. Early on the AI is most likely spreading points around to all 12 recruits, or at least 8 or 10. By focusing on 5 or 6 you can spend 18 or 20 points on each target and get an early edge.
* Once you make a recruits list of 3 and can offer a visit, try to schedule it in the next few weeks. If you don't they may visit other schools before they get to yours and pick them over you. Also, if you schedule it way out, they feel neglected (as EaglesFan posted).
* I haven't had much success in trying to predict what pitch will work. In NCAA 2004 you could narrow down choices to some degree. If he was looking at schools near his home, location could be important. If he was looking at big name schools, prestige could be important. If he is a JUCO player, playing time was often a factor as they don't want to ride the pines when they only have a few years left. So far those techniques don't SEEM to work.
* If I've have two players who are similar that I'm interested in, I'll go with the one from my pipeline state.
* In the middle stages if I have a few recruiting points to burn, I'll scout a player to see if he will be a discipline problem, or if he seems like he'll have good potential for development. If I'm behind other schools and not gaining ground, a bad disicipline problem will often lead me to cut bait and focus on other players.
EDIT: Celeval mentioned that sometimes you get feedback about what pitch might work with a particular recruit. I wonder if that might be tied to your pipeline states? Would make sense. You've got ties with that high school coach and he can feed you some insider info. That would be pretty neat if that were the case. I'm at work, so I can't verify. Perhaps someone else can.

OSU (me) vs. Miami (OH)
Really enjoyed it on AA. I won 31-17, Ginn was a beast. He had a 18-yard reverse which set up a TD and a 38-yard reception which also lead to a score. AJ Hawk was dominant as well, I like this.

In my mind I must have confused the RFTH features with the new Madden put-yourself-in-the-game feature. Am I missing something or is the only difference between RFTH and a dynasty that you are player driven instead of coach drive? You still call the plays, play QB, etc.? I was thinking that you only controlled your player.
Also, for anyone who has played around more than one week with RFTH features, do you ever get to do more than one drill per position? I was a RB and the only drill I could do was the Oklahoma drill. Does that change when you advance past week one?
I'm also fuzzy on exiting the drills. I'm always asked if I'm sure I want to exit because I'll lose stats not saved -- but there is no option to save anything. Just a hitch in the system or am I crazy?

The video dynasty that I had planned is on hold indefinitely. My internet access is gone at home. The provider will need to send a technician to my place, but nobody is going to be at home during the daytime until the middle of next week after I quit my job and my wife returns from out of town. I need to find out if they'll charge me a fee for performing the service call, also, because I'm not going to bring them out if they're going to charge me. I'm moving across the country in two weeks, and it's just not going to be worth it. Basically, if I can get a free and prompt visit from a technician, I'll get this going within a week. If I can't, it'll probably be at least three weeks, since I'll need to get all my stuff set up in Pennsylvania.

If you ever play against NC State you better plan on keeping 8 men in to block, their DEs are freaks. I couldn't even run screens against them because one would get in so quick I would have to get rid of it early then the other one would just eat my RB for dinner.

The key to stopping short passes is good pass coverage. The key to stopping deep passes is good pressure on the QB (get to the QB before the routes can develope). I also use 2 Man Cover defense a lot (the two safeties play deep zone coverage while everyone else is man coverage.
As for the Player getting too many deep passes, you may want to up the CPU's AI Awareness setting a few clicks (I play on AA difficulty and I think my CPU's AI Awareness setting is 75 right now). That seems to work good.

Embarassingly, I've had to lower my difficulty rating to varsity. After going down 27-0 (in the 1st quarter!) to UL Lafayette with Maryland, I'm just figuring out how awful I am. I don't remember thinking the game was this hard last year - I could have sworn I was on AA difficulty and I would easily get 8+ wins a season.
For some reason, I rarely find the holes when running the ball, and everytime I pass (even with a short drop) my offensive line misses someone and my QB gets buried. Whenever I run the option, I sub in my 90 speed quarterback, and yet a defensive lineman from the opposite side runs my QB down before he can get into position to pitch. I'm fumbling, giving up interceptions and huge play after huge play.
I really feel like a detriment to my team and I'm worried that my CPU teammates are planning for me to have an "accident" on the way to the stadium :D

Agreed.
I learned my lesson. Don't delay bringing in a recruit you really want. I lost the top HB in the nation as he gave FSU a hard commit after visiting them in week 11. So much, for having him come for my biggest home game of the year in week 15 :(. If I don't get a top notch HB in the off-season recruiting, I could be set up for a big fall next year, I doubt I will be able to convince Bush not to go pro after this season. The good news is that I got my second recruit to sign, the top FB in the nation (although I'm not that impressed with his poor potential and low field awareness.)

I'm tied 0-0 with #29 Oklahoma St., 2nd quarter and I miss their HB on a run up the gut, 40 yards later they are at my 5 yd line and go in for the score on the next play. It's now 17-0 and I'm taking a break because I don't remember what just happened to the 7-0 game??

I powered off after I switched players to sack the QB...except it switched to my CB who then dove to the ground who then left a WR wide open for a 50 yard catch. The next drive they hit a small pass in the flat that turned into an 80-yd TD catch. It was bullshit. Maybe I should turn it back to Varsity? I was 4-0 in Varsity but am struggling on AA with tOSU.

I'm finding in previous versions when I switched I could help out by making the switch. In this version, I'm finding that generally I'm screwing up no matter where I go (especially if I switch). I'm thinking that either the lack of 2005 playtime (because I disliked that version) or the mere fact I'm just a mid-30's dullard when it comes to game-playing is coming back to haunt me.
Maybe I need to "learn" to play my one guy and rely on my teammates. I'm also thinking that maybe I should give up playing as my impact player MLB - I think I am rendering him useless.

My impressions:
I played 3 games, I'm having a lot of fun with it. I started my "official" dynasty with Miami, I'm 2-1. I lost the first game with FSU, Leon Washington teared me up. I was impressed to actually see an AI player so "difference-maker". He ran for over 150 yds and 3 TDs, he was really unstoppable. I couldn't get anything going on offense, plus my QB went down on the first play. FSU have 2 impact LBs, Sims and another, they're beasts!!! I scored 2 TDs but that was all. I was beaten like 40-14. BTW, I'm sure if I replay this game now, it will be more close since I learned the controls better.
Second game, I ran over Clemson 50something-10. Tyrone Moss ran over 200 yds with 3 TDs. This was easy.
On the third, versus Colorado, I won 16-14 in a super-close game. It was a defensive struggle for 3 (!) quarters, we were 0-0!!!
As for the in-season recruiting, I like that too. It's simple, you only have to spread the points. One little flaw is that (I'm sure somebody already mentioned it) in week 1 you have no additional information about the recruits, apart the state.
Stats-wise, I didn't check a lot, but everything seems right, beside the fact that my O-linemen have a huge amount of pancakes. Eric Winston has like 60, after 3 games!!! At the end of the year I'll have my line All-NCAA 1st Team, and they'll progress too much. That bothers me.
Are you guys seeing this one too? If I lower the run blocking slider will it resolve? I run a lot, but 50-60 after 3 games are waaay too many.
In the end, I love this game so far.
MizzouRah
07-15-2005, 09:45 AM
I also had my recruiting and disipline set to auto.. don't forget to turn that off if you want to do it all manually. It's under the coaching screen, page 2.
Considering how much time ticks off when calling the no huddle and changing the play at the line of scrimmage, I usually run the same play as well. :) I'll have to look and see what the CPU team runs next time.

That reminds me, last night I was in a tight game and running no-huddle and then audibling at the line. I was on the road and the crowd was going crazy and when I called a hot route, the receiver involved was looking at the QB and signalling like he couldn't hear. I thought "neat animation" until I ran the play and the receiver ran the original route and not the hot one. So apparently in loud situations, you either have to call hot routes twice or can't call them at all. A nice touch really.

Set up a RFTH dynasty with a scrambling quarterback who walked on to Oklahoma State. I'm playing on default AA, and my first game was against Montana St.
It wasn't pretty. I pulled my starters at the half after I was up 56-2 (gave up a dumb safety in the first quarter). The final score of the game was 77-2, and that was with me running out the clock and taking a knee for the final two series.

Well personally, *I* had 2 sacks, 7 tackles, and 2 forced fumbles. I never switch players and play with the MLB Dedrick Harrington. It was my best game yet and one play the HB was past me, but I kept pursuing and when I used the hit stick, my guy wraps him up and I see this cool strip the ball animation and seconds later, we have the ball.

Passing
Brohm (LOU) 20-33, 214 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT
Woodson (UK) 24-43, 489 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT
Rushing
Bush (LOU) 34 att, 236 yards, 2 TD

Receiving
Jones (LOU) 8 rec, 120 yards
Mitchell (UK) 9 rec, 261 yards, 4 TD
Defensive Impact Players
Dumervil (LOU) 6 tackles, 2 tfl, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble
Abdullah (UK) 10 tackles, 3 tfl, 1 pdf
Kentucky scored with 4:02 remaining to take the lead 35-28, we then went four and out and had to punt. A big fumble by Kentucky's backup RB gave us the ball at their 33 yard line. We had to convert a 4th and 10 on an 11 yard pass to Jones. Then ended up scoring on a 11 yard run by Bush with 0:58 remaining. Kentucky then drove down the field to our 20 yard line and threw a interception which we returned to their 18 yard and setup the game winning FG as time expired.
Rushing is still to easy perhaps, I'm not sure. Kentucky's rush defense isn't exactly good rating wise, and Bush averaged 6.9 yards per carry. The Woodson-Mitchell show was mostly because of two plays, one was a screen pass out of a 3 TE set which I was predicting run and bringing the house. The other was a play where I pressed the wrong button and ended up getting the guy that was trying to cover Mitchell.

Heck ya. I love blitzing, plus pressure on the QB makes for bad passes. I saw two just flat out bad bombs by the Ok St. QB yesterday due to pressure. It was so neat, the QB throws a bomb and the WR isn't even close, just my FS who intercepts it like he's playing catch.

Lee picks UTEP.
Neither team scores on their first drives, both teams cross the other's 40. A false start forces NM to punt instead of attempting a FG, UTEP pins NM at the 3 yard line with a great punt.
NM goes 3 and out, after a short return UTEP has the ball on the UNM 36 yard line. But Ebell fumbles on the first play! Both teams exchange 3 and outs, before DonTrell Moore breaks off a 51-yard TD run. After both teams exchange a couple more punts Palmer connects with Higgins for a 50-yard TD pass. 7-7 with 6:30 to play in the 2nd Qtr.
UTEP misses a 37-yard FG wide right with 1:24 to play in the 1st half! UTEP forces UNM 3 and out, but Palmer throws a (stupid) interception. UNM takes over at the UTEP 7 yd line. UTEP holds UNM to a 22-yard FG, 10-7 UNM. UTEP drives to the 50 but stalls. 10-7 UNM at the half.

UTEP has a great KO return to the UNM 45 but the TE fumbles after making a great catch to give the ball back to UNM. Impact player Howard makes a great stop for UTEP on 3rd down but he grabbed a whole lot of face mask. That leads to a 7-yard TD run by Moore. 17-7 UNM.
Higgins fumbles the ensuing KO return, UNM ball at the UTEP 35 :( But Demps picks off the UNM pass in the end zone and returns it 26 yards to the UTEP 23!! UNM scores on a 26-yard TD pass to the TE. 24-7 UNM with 3:29 to play in the 3rd.
Ebell fumbles at the UNM 35-yard line ending another scoring opportunity. UNM QB scores on a 21-yard run to start the 4th, it is now 31-7 UNM. :(
A Palmer INT in the end zone is pretty much going to sum it up. Shiot.
Ok, well I was going to be done writing for this game but I have to write about Moore's TD run. Easily the best I have ever seen, he jukes my OLB with a soft juke, then here comes my safety to light him up from the right but he does the backstep juke, here comes my other safety to stuff him at the goalline but he flips over him to score. WOW.
Final Score - New Mexico 38, UTEP 14
That sucked.

Geez, did someone grease the ball when the Miners had it? Talk about turnover prone...
Thanks, Balldog. That'll help satisfy my cravings for a bit...

i found a buggy:
Dynasty, USF QB on 3rd down rolls right on a draw....all of a sudden he takes the blocker stance and no one can tackle him and he slides about, slightly without moving forwards or backwards. I believe the only way the game will continue is when the quarter ends....that kinda sucks.
i was wrong qtr. continues til play stops. **sigh**
turning it off.

I went 2-9 in my first season with Arizona, but got a commit from a 4-star QB In-season. Then I Got fired.

Jeebs...I'm going to be UTEP in my dynasty with four of my other friends where we all take over a team and play out a dynasty. It's fun because you can get other people excited about your dynasty. I'm excited about Jordan Palmer and winning the CUSA.
In my personal dynasty i'm fresno state...where penigar got hurt against Oregon and the backup sucks.

I lowered "human run blocking" to 30%. It seems that it's toned down a little, but the numbers are still a bit high. Eric Winston, my 96 LT, had like 10 in my last game. Well, we'll just live with that... Maybe we should try to lower to 0%???

Pass blocking at 0%?!? I can't imagine how quickly the pass rush must get to you. I still have problems with DE's blowing by my highly rated offensive line with it at 50%. However, I have been toying with the idea of lowering the run blocking rating.

It gets there pretty fast. But through four games (including Lousville & Florida) I have only been sacked 9 times. Now, my completion percentage and TD-INT ratio are a completely different story :D

A little bit during the season, but I have not started my second year yet so I'm not sure about progress during the offseason. The UC left tackle was rated 85 to start the year and is a 86 at the end of the season.

I'm already getting disenchanted with the game. I've yet to have a close contest after six games and I'm 5-1 with Ole Miss. When the AI DOES do well it usually seems to be a bunch of cheap crap. The CPU running IS markedly better. I do believe that. But the passing doesn't really seem to be. I've yet to have a game where my team gets less than 3 picks.
Perhaps I need to up to Heisman and do some slider adjustments...

I've got a passing qb playing for Arizona that he got an offer to in RFTH mode. I'm running 3 minute-quarters and passing most plays I have the ball.
My first game I slaughtered somebody... It wasn't even funny :D

My net access seems to be working right now (although I don't expect it to last long), so I'll say one thing really quickly. I like how the game gives you codes for the sliders now. If you like to try out different slider settings, you can just write down the codes instead of all the individual slider positions. Excellent stuff.

Agreed. I decided to try Jistic's sliders in an exhibition game because he usually makes good sliders, and it was cool to be able to enter in the sliders. By the way, I didn't like his version 2 of the sliders. Both QB's were passing too high of a percentage. However, I do like the basic idea behind his sliders in trying to increase the passing percentages some as I've decided they are a bit too low in played games for my taste. The good news is that his sliders which take a few things to the extreme show that you can get a high completion percentage for both teams if you want it.

Happily, I think I may have taken a step forward. I played Tulane tonight on Varsity and destroyed them through 3 quarters, 45-3. I then decided to hike it back to AA and finished the game with a 66-17 victory (one of their TDs was a 95 yd INT return).
I think I finally figured out how to run (as I burned them for an 81 yard TD run on AA level) and my move to the DL has paid dividends. I think I can finally play AA and have it challenging as opposed to getting annihilated. Looking forward to getting my rosters (they shipped today) and starting my first dynasty :D

Will be nice if I can hopefully figure out the correct difficulty and sliders to make a game of it. I'm hoping I can find the correct attributes to allow me to have Maryland win/lose to teams they are suuposed to. Will make my dynasty more fun if I can avoid the 11-0 or 0-11 scenario.
Hopefully AA is it...and maybe just a little changing of the sliders will lead to perfection :)

hey guys also if your having trouble with passing.
there easy play mode. if you have it set to yes. you can have pass assist on, catch assist on, run assist on and kick assist on.
you can choose on or off for those.
anyone playing with any assistant on?
Pass assistant affects qb accuracy and pass blocking. if you have it on, then the sliders for those are off.
it helps a quarterback pass the ball better by designating whic WR are open and which are not
Catch Assistant affects WR catching. if you have it on then the slider for it will be off.
It helps the Wr catch the ball better by making passes easier to complete.
Run assistant affects Run ability and run blocking. if you have it on then the sliders for it will be off.
it makes it easier for the ball carrier to find the holes in the defense and gain big yards.
i using pass assistant and catch assistant on so far. but once i get better i turn them off.

Errr...I just experienced my first CPU long ball bomb festival. I was up 13-0 and Nebraska decided to just start chucking it deep, to the tune of a final score of 35-13.
48-yard pass, 70-yard pass, 26-yard pass, 60-yard pass, 37-yard pass...
All these were bombs into coverage except for the 37-yard pass, I assumed since they were up 28-13 with 3:03 to play they would run the ball and bit on the PA pass. They scored 35 points from in the final 12 minutes after being shutout for the first 24.
There QB ended up being 21-32 for 506 yards with 5 TDs and 1 INT.

I've been Pitt's bitch. Twice I was down 28-0 to them in the first half, as my PSU secondary couldn't defend crap. Once the game fell to DDE, the other to my finger hitting the power button.
I finally decide to get the game over with, and I'm finally able to prevent them from the big pass play. I was up 20-10 heading into the fourth, and they kicked a field goal with 2:11 to make it 20-13.
I pick up two first downs, and run the clock down to :59, when Tony Hunt fumbled the ball after a big run. Pitt got it, and hit a bomb to tie it with :48 left. I get it back, get to midfield on a good return, but can't get anywhere. I punt, and they get the ball at the 20 with :13 left. They complete a pass to 14 yards, and call timeout with :03 left.
I go into the prevent.
It doesn't matter.
Palko hooks up with one of his receivers on a 66-yard bomb, in triple coverage, winning the game on the last play, 26-20. I am still stunned.

Don't know if this has said before (probably has), but I kept thinking last night about something this game needs and something it had several years ago before the exporting into Madden began. If I don't export my draft class into Madden, why can't the game tell me in what round my player would have been drafted. It doesn't even have to be entirely perfect, but something would be better than nothing.
I play with the house rule that if a guy is obvious first round talent, I don't even try to convince him to come back for his senior season. But sometimes there are guys that are on the fringe and it drives me nuts that I don't know where they would get drafted.
I suppose this is EA's way of making me buy Madden. :)

how the pancakes on it with those sliders?
with default sliders, penatlies max out on AA 8 min quarter i got a grand total of 86 pancakes in one game. that is crazy. top player got 31 pancakes in one game.
if pancakes is a problem for human, its going to cause human teams to have a great offense line when they progress faster than cpu teams.
we should be getting the average pancakes per season as the sims games. if not we going to progress faster for the offensive line players than cpu during a dynasty.

Guys, lower the human run blocking slider to 0%. The numbers of pancakes will decrease. They're still a bit high, especially if you have great O-line and run a lot like me, but they're not out of proportion anymore. In my last game (destroyed UNC 55-21), I got 8 pancakes from Winston which is my most talented lineman (96 ovr.). One lineman had 5, others 2/3. I ran like 30/35 times. It doesn't affect the running game, indeed it becomes more challenging, but absolutely not impossible.
I also modified all the other sliders, and now my completion % are increased.
I'll probably post them later. I'm getting good games (even lost with Ga.Tech at home, damn!!!) and enough realistic results .

Forgot: how are you doing in the in-season recruiting? I manage to get a 5-star QB from Florida, a 5-star RB from Texas and a 4-star MLB from Ohio. I'm 6-2, and in week 10 I think. I guess I was pretty lucky to get 3 committments. The other 9 turned me down.

I think so. I did 2 games with 0%, and the max I got was 8 pancakes from one of my linemen. Consider that I run a lot, even 35/40 attempts for game.
My RB ability is at 50% (put I think I'll probably lower it), CPU RB Ability is at 80%.

So, would you guys say that this years version is better than 2k5? How about 2k4? I think the only thing I've seen so far that turns me off, is the deep ball. I just hope its not overused in online play. Hopefully, someone will find a play that stops the deep ball like in 2k5.

i sim a season and i check season stats for all teams the highest anybody player got for pancake is 41.
it seems like pancake is high still no matter what you put for the run blk slider. your going to end up with way way more than 41 pancake for one player for a dynasty season.
this is going to cause problems with offensive line players for human progressing faster than cpu teams. its a problem if you play a dynasty.

I agree with this assessment. At this point, I'm fairly sure I'm going to play this more than even 2004, and I suspect ultimately I will deem this the best NCAA in my eyes. However, I'm giving it some more time before I definitely say that.

My short musings on the game
Positives:
- AI running ability
- In-season recruiting
- Ability to turn off the crowd impact
Negatives
- Corners cover the short pass perhaps too well and can't defend the bomb for their lives
- Too many passes dropped
- AI CPU completion rate is insanely high in simulated games (after 8 weeks in my dynasty, 39 QBs have 70+ completion percentage
- AI receivers are just plain stupid at times
- Some very sloppy animation transitions
- Commentary just says some dumb stuff at times (for example, I threw the ball into the endzone, a defender tipped the ball, which then bounced off another defender's back and into the hands of my receiver. The commentary I get is "WOW, there's no way the defense could've STOPPED that play!"

I've just spent half an hour reading th entire 10 pages of this thread, and it sounds like a typical EA release - initial wow factor, follwed by exasperation as serious flaws are gradually exposed in the game, which leads to a never ending quest to find a set of sliders that set the game as it should be...
Hopefully Madden will be different, but history suggests otherwise :(

I use AA defaults and while there is an issue or two that I could mess with the sliders some, I haven't and it plays just fine for my skill level.
Of course penalties are all the way turned up and I might have 1-3 penalties called in a game, but that's been like that since penalties were added years ago.
If a game becomes a slider tweaking nightmare, I'll take it back. MVP needed very minor tweaks and still plays a fun and competitive game, I'm thinking NCAA will be the same way.

I'm trying some slider tweaks to add more realism, but it hasn't been as bad as past games for me. The CPU doesn't tend to throw deep on me often, and I'm usually stopping it with cover 2. I limit myself to throwing deep 3 or 4 times a game. I'm still having a great deal of fun :)
