View Full Version : How much is passing worth to you?

I'm currently in the market for a new midfielder. I'm entertaining Supernaturals all the way up to Mythicals if I can find them. So here's my dilemma. How much is passing REALLY worth?
An ex youth pull of mine is on sale who is supernatural/outstanding. He averages 6.5-7 stars in decent form, but his wage is dirt cheap, something in the neighborhood of $22,000 per week. The catch . . . he's listed for nearly $7M . . .
Looking at other middies, I've noticed that mythical middies with no secondaries also get 6.5-7 stars on a regular basis. The catch . . . their salaries are around $100k per week. These guys are usually listed around 5.5M.
The dilemma: The difference in purchase price is $1.5M, but the difference in salary is about $80k per week, totalling $1.28M per season. Logic tells me that the SN/OUT IM is the better deal after the first year or so. What I'm losing in purchase price, I make up in weekly salary.
Since I am a scoring trainer, I need a better midfield, rather than a better attack. So, does it behoove me to get a Mythical middie with bad secondaries or a SN middie with Outstanding passing?
What are your thoughts?

Stars are evil, you realize this, yes? Just because he's putting up the same number of stars as a mythical does not mean that he's giving the same contribution to midfield. A lot of the SN/Out contribution is going to the attack, and he's getting those stars simply because of the passing. I'm sure you know all this already, but I just wanted to put it out there anyways. If what your after is midfield, passing isn't really what you need, as it's more of a gravy type skill on midfielders, at least in my opinion.

imo, passing is very important. However, in your case (being a scoring trainer who needs help in the midfield) I'd say go for a higher PMer. Mythical is crazy though. Way too high of wages. Highest I go is ET.

My wages are pretty well under control. After selling of an ET trainee, I should be around 130k. I know that I can afford a good middie, but I think I might be patient with it. When I see an ET/Mythical guy I like, I'll make a move on him.
I just liked the idea of bringing a youth pull back to my squad. :D
Although I did notice that Tombstone Titans in US ML, plays two IM's offensive regularly. Granted they are much better than supernatural playmakers. ;)

As a scoring trainer, I'm of the mindset you can get away with limited passing from your midfielders and get away with going for the best playmaking you can. On the other hand, I definitely dig the bringing back the youth pull and the wage saving part. The kid's age - let's say, 22, giving you 4-6 seasons before needing to be resold IF you intend to recoup much of the investment - would be a big part of my decision.
The other thing, of course, is that the saving in wages will allow you to chase down a much better possession winger to pair with him on the winger side. :D

I'm curious what you ended up doing in this case. Frankly, I play 2 middies offensive (titan/solid and titan/pass) and my extra middie is a high ET with no secondaries. It gets me anywhere from an ET to a Divine +1 on midfield with mythical being about average. I've had lots of conversations with others where the break even point is for midfield with wages versus performance and it's pretty much universal that high titanic to low ET is about where you want to sit since that's about 50K per week per middie. As a striker trainee on top of that, there's really no reason to go crazy nuts buying extra passing for that kind of premium pricing unless you really think it helps to have that extra couple of levels of attack at the expense of midfield.
Tho, I am starting to notice a de-emphasis on midfield as this season progresses in my matches. I'm winning midfield quite handily in most matches and out-hatstat'ing by 30 but still having a hard time winning. Hattie never puts in engine updates midseason, do they?

SI,
I ended up finding a pretty decent deal on a Titanic/Inadequate middie who I picked up for $4.4M and whom I pay roughly $40k in wages per week. This isn't the kind of guy I was really going for, but I needed to get a middie in to try to get a win against another week III team. As it goes, he'll stay on my squad for a little while. He'll make a decent 3rd middie for my *ideal* team. For my two starters, I'll probably be looking for mid-high ET's one defensive, one offensive or both normal.
The good news is that I have got some $ to work with still and I don't have to worry about paying the $$$ salary of a mythical or magical middie that I was considering. Based on the way my season is going, I can be more patient with my next selections. I'm not going to try to kill myself to stay in III this season. To fully upgrade my team to where I want it to be, I still need to land that keeper, 1-2 middies, and a good CD to defend all the 3-4-3's that people are throwing around.
After this week's match, I'm going to try to sell three foreign midfielders ranging from Magnificent to Supernatural and upgrade the midfield to get that taken care of. Once that is done, my quest for Hattrick domination can proceed.
