View Full Version : 1980s Song Title Puzzle

Pages : [1] 2

Okay, here's a collection of clues for 1980s song titles. I think they are all 1980s, and if not, they are very close in the late 1970s or early 1990s. Some clues are literal, some are not. There are 25 artists/bands, one for every letter of the alphabet except X. The clues are sorted alphabetically, but this has no impact on the puzzle other than to randomize the list. Artists can be used for the first letter of either their first or last name (example: Steve Winwood could be an “S” or “W”). Ignore the word “The” for band names (Example: The Cars would fall under “C”). I will acknowledge and "green font" the correct answers once they are posted. Good luck!

For puzzles liek these, we have to have faith in WSUCOugar -- you have to be able to "back out" the clue from the answer, or else it doesn't make sense. If there's an extra word or two in there that doesn't connect at all - then it's probably not the right answer.

No penalty for guessing, though - just have appropriate respect for the puzzlemaster and his craft.

Sometimes a guess you know isn't right will spark an idea in someone else. A bad guess is better than no guess.

I didn't mean "don't make guesses" - but rather was trying to express the idea that WSU put these clues together pretty carefully, and most everything is in there for a reason. If he used the word "cool," it's probably not superfluous -- he shouldn't have to come back after ten guesses and give us a hint that "the word cool means something" - we ought to be working from that assumption from the start.

No problem with guesses -- but if everyone (mob mentality) starts agreeing that we should just build guesses off one part of the clue and not the other part(s), then we're likely getting farther away, not closer.

WSUCougar
08-16-2005, 03:39 PM
Also, there are several different varieties of clues in this puzzle. Some are literal, others are strictly wordplay, and some are more subtle or tricky. If one avenue isn't working, try another.

To be honest, I didn't catch the connection on that one either, but it makes sense now. I think my biggest confusion with the Devo song was the "to do" part of the quote. Cool-whip, miracle-whip....that I get. Was the "to do" part included to make "whip" into a verb leading into "Whip It"?

Oedipal school subject would be English - and we are still lacking the E clue - so maybe it's an English Beat tune. However, I have no idea which one, because there are no other words in the clue to indicate a song and I don't know of an English Beat tune that refers to incest, being blind or solving a riddle.

Thoughts on Oedipal School Subject. "Oedipal" usually refers to the romantic love of one's mother. Oedipus (in Greek Mythology) was prophesized to kill his father (the king) and marry his mother. He ended up doing both of these things and he later blinded himself when he found out.

Now that I have typed all of this...."She Blinded Me With Science" - Thomas Dolby?

I'll confess that I don't do puzzles, so I'm unfamiliar with many of the common puzzle techniques out there. But many of these just don't work for me. It the Lead Bronco one turns out to be Too Much Time on My Hands, that's another one I just don't get. I mean I get the connection that has been made, and it seems plausible, but I would never have gotten it. Same with the Whip It clue.

I think, because my mind is on Attorney Mode 24/7, I'm just too literal with words to be loose enough to make these connections. For instance, I would never think that someone can have some "too much" of anything. You either have too much, or you don't. So my mind wouldn't ever allow me to go there. Of course, that might not be the right answer, but if it is, it would explain why I haven't figured any of these out. Actually, I did get the Sibling one just based on ther Sister connection, but didn't post it. With the Whip It clue, that's more of puzzle technique thing than the actual connection, which I get after the fact.

Anyway, carry on. I'm somewhat enjoying the learning the process, even though I'm frustrated by my inability to participate.

Anybody have any thoughts on "No Hamlet ending"? In Hamlet, many of the principals die, Hamlet, his mother, his step-father... The play Hamlet is classified as a tragedy. Plays in those days were either tragedies, or comedies (hence the theater symbol of two masks, one laughing and the other crying). Any other thoughts?

There were ghosts in Hamlet, and at the end nobody busted them....for a crazy longshot, how about Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters? :D

Well, in Hamlet Laertes used a poisoned sword to poison/kill Hamlet. Hamlet then used the same sword to to poison/kill Laertes. In the meantime, the King had poisoned a drink intended for Hamlet, but the Queen drank it instead. On his death bed Laertes confesses to poisoning the blade, but blames the King for instigating it. IIRC Hamlet then kills the King, avenging Hamlet's father's (Claudio?) death.

However, the clue is NO Hamlet ending, suggesting they all lived happily ever after. So, any songs about poison not working, or swords missing the mark, or supporting the King? Anyone?

Also, an alternative might be hamlet meaning small village.

For No Hamlet Ending, I was thinking "living" or "alive" since everyone is pretty much dead at the end of the play. But I couldn't come up with anything that fit our letters or otherwise made sense.
