If anyone knows anyone having to stay in a hotel or refugee center in the Houston area, we have room for people. Just thought I'd throw that out there. We might be taking in someone from a co-worker's family next week as well be we have the room for another.

Very nice Tasan!

Several people have sent me PM's offering us a place to stay, and I appreciate them all. However, I can't ask any non-family members to put up with 5 humans and 4 small pets for even a night. However, I sincerely thank everyone for the offers.

As it is, I'm hopeful I can somehow arrange to rent a large furnished apartment in the Baton Rouge area or preferably 2 smaller furnished apartments for our crew tomorrow via phone/email.

I figure even if LSU doesn't still have a job for me, I'll probably be able to see some private patients out of an office of a friend in the Baton Rouge area.

I spent last night in the arms of a girl in Louisiana,
And though I'm out on the highway, my thoughts are still with her.
Such a strange combination of woman and a child.
Such a strange situation: stopping every hundred miles.
Calling Baton Rouge.

A replay of last nights events roll through my mind,
Except a scene or two erased by sweet red wine.
I see a truck stop sign ahead so I change lanes.
I need a cup of coffee and a couple dollars change.
Calling Baton Rouge.

CHORUS
Operator won't you put me on through,
I gotta send my love down to Baton Rouge.
Hurry up, won't you put her on the line,
I gotta talk to the girl just one more time.

Hello Samantha dear I hope you're doing fine,
And it won't be long before I'm with you all the time,
But until then I'll spend my money
Right on down to my last dime,
Whoa, calling Baton Rouge.

CHORUS

Calling Baton Rouge.
Sweet Baton Rouge.
My Baton Rouge.
Whoa ho whoa ho hoooo.

Well, please let me know if the Baton Rouge area falls through. Not sure if you are licensed or not in Texas, but my father in law is a retired Doctor with all kinds of contacts, so we might even be able to help out there too.

I feel kinda helpless here, so close to all this suffering but not really sure how to help out. Any of you Louisiana folks out there let me know if there is ANYTHING myself and my family can do to help out. Again, we have pleanty of room. I wish I had time off left to go and help out.

I never realized you were down there in NO. I always thought you were in Philly... Shows how observant I am. I hope everything is alright other than this temporary setback. Your home ok, other than possibly having carp swimming though it?

I'm originally from NJ (and close to Philly) and grew up a fan of all of the Philly sports teams but moved down to New Orleans about 6 years ago when I finished medical school because my wife is from the area and wanted to return home.

As far as my home, from the aerial views, it looks dry on the streets around it, but I don't know if the windows or roof was damaged. I also don't know if looters might have broken in. I guess I'll find out in a few weeks or months.

Hanging out in a hotel in North Little Rock, AR. Just called many apartment complexes in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Lake Charles. All of them are full. Finally, found two furnished corporate apartments that will be available in Shreveport, LA in a week (actually the second one will be available in 10 days or so.)

Looks like I'm moving to Shreveport for a few months. Hopefully, LSU Medical School in New Orleans will be able to transfer my contract and get me work in the Shreveport area since there is an LSU Medical School there.

Hey EF, while you're in the thread & before I forget to ask about it, there's something I'd like you to keep in the back of your mind, if you happen to hear of something like this I'd be interested to know about it.

About 20 minutes from me (in Covington, GA) is one of about 10 centers set up here in Georgia to temporarily house evacuees. As of yesterday, about 110 people from throughout the affected area had shown up already & that number was expected to grow to near the 400 person capacity at some point.

What I'm wondering about is this: are there plans, if some of these relocations become longer term than just a week or two, for people like yourself to be shifted to help care for their needs?

Here's how I'm thinking -- surely there's going to be some strong need for things like grief counseling & such for the displaced persons, perhaps something as simple as hearing a familiar accent or talking to therapists/et al who recognize the same landmarks, locations, restaurants, churches, etc. would have some additional value in the counseling process. I have no idea how many various health care workers are displaced themselves, but I could see where putting them to work in the locations where the evacuees are gathered would have some benefit all the way 'round.

That is interesting and a good point. Currently, I don't have a license to practice medicine in GA or any other state besides LA. I suppose the federal government could expedite the process of acquiring a license in another state but that is usually a 2-3 month process which is why I figured I better stay in LA. I'm probably overpaying for these apartments, but at least if I can get a part time job in Shreveport, I should have a positive cash flow each month. If I go to NJ or GA, than that isn't true. However, I definitely agree that there is going to be a need for mental health professionals for all of the evacuees and certainly it would be nice to have a fellow evacuee help with that. I expect high rates of PTSD and other disorders such as depression in the aftermath of this.

Re-reading your post, I think there are many displaced health workers. However, there is no plan that is evident to me at this point. I just visited the website for emergency health care workers and they said they are desperate for volunteers in Baton Rouge and that a formal plan for LSU employees should be in place within the next 24 hours (perhaps as soon as 6 hours from now.)

Eek an affiliate of moveon.org.

Anyway, we have a bunch of contacts via mine and my wife's jobs. We think we'll have someone next week, from either hers or mine.
