The 49ers have made their mandatory cuts leaving a very lopsided and bizzare roster:

Of the 50 men on the roster (excluding the punter, kicker and long snapper):

28 roster spots on offense including:
4 Quarterbacks
4 Running Backs
1 True Fullback
4 Tight Ends
6 Wide Receivers
9 O Lineman

So of the 50 roster spots, 19 (38%) are for offensive skill players who only occupy 6 of the 22 starting spots (27%).

22 roster spots on defense including:
7 D Linemen (they are running 3-4 and they are talking of only dressing 5/game)
7 LB's
5 Safeties
3 CBs (4 of the final 15 waived were CBs including Middlebrooks acquired in the trade with Denver for Engleberger)

The 3 CBs is what gets me. Sure, you could convert Mike Rumph back to CB if you had to but what a disruption to the secondary. Surely carrying Middlebrooks or Holly or even Hanson as insurance wouldn't have hurt. The team will just have no depth at all for injuries. Considering the number of D-lineman they went through last year and that both starting corners were lost for the season hurt, the depth is just plain silly.

Cody Pickett had better get used to special teams, and start learning safety.

Mmm... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I counted 4 CBs (Plummer, Spencer, Mike Adams and rookie Derrick Johnson) and 4 Ss (Parish, Rumph, Carpenter, Lewis).
But yeah, the depth is silly anyway... I would have kept Middlesbrook, especially because they traded for him. Strange decision.

That must be how they are justifying it. Adams has been listed at Safety all camp (and still is at Ourlads.com (http://www.ourlads.com/secure/depthchart.cfm?index1=SF) ), but I see that they have updated the depth chart and roster at sf49ers.com (http://www.sf49ers.com/team/roster.asp?Sort=Name) to show him at CB. Adams has been playing at nickel though during camp, and essentially beat Middlesbrook for that job, but still seems light..

I would expect the Niners to be active in the waiver wire. when you are the worst team in the league, you can almost always improve talent wise with other teams castoffs.

worked pretty damn well for Walsh.

Don't forget that after week 1 the rosters of many teams will change again, as teams will sign some vets that if on the roster for week 1 would have had a guaranteed contract.

4 QB's is strange thoug. You'd think that the QB's need as much reps as possible, and since Smith is the future...

4 TEs? And a Long Snapper? They have no clue what they are doing.

And a Long Snapper?

Brian Jennings, signed to a 6-year contract under the brilliant Erickson-Donahue management. That was an excellent move...

I love coments like this...

I respect that the 49ers seem to be keeping the players that actualy won a spot on the roster, as apposed to keeping the players that they have the most money invested in regardless of whether or not they were outperformed.
