View Full Version : Where in Hell's Butthole is the New Game from Jim?

(rant on)
The NFL season is already going into week 7. The same with College Football. Halloween is almost upon us. The NBA is in preseason. Hell, even hockey has started again. Yet, no announcements.
I can hope that Jim's into his final push.
But with EHM already out and FM 2006 and Civ 4 due to come out soon, I'd like to know where to allocate my gaming dollars. This is in addition to me getting hooked on the rental of Jade Empire. That's also starting to look like a purchase.
(rant off)
No, I know Jim doesn't owe me (or us) a damn thing. Still, it would be nice to know what the heck is going on. Of course, FOF2004 was released on 11/14/05, so it's not uncommon for Jim to be well into football season before he releases something. Still, I do budget for such purchases and I'd like to know when and what to budget for money AND my time.

I hear ya man. It's not even about gaming dollars for me ... I just know if i get into FM2006 and Civ4 like expected I won't have any time (or honestly any interest) to get into another game for like the next six months. Had it been released 2 months ago, when I was desparate for a 'hot' title I would have bought it in a second (having successfully avoided the Space Rangers temptation).

It's like a band that puts out a great album, then is fearful of the 'sophomore slump'. Toss out a few EPs(patches) and hope the public will salivate enough when the next release comes out...no matter how bad it is.

long story short - i don't agree with jim's philosophy on announcing games a week or two before they're due, just so he doesn't have to feel pressured to meet a deadline.
i'm just gonna read this thread, i don't want to get back into it. it's his company, it's my money. he's free to run his company howver he wants, i'm free to spend my money wherever i wish. it's a good arrangement. :)

At this time, we're not ready to release information about our next project. Look for news releases on this web site later in 2005.

Wait.. nevermind
While it doesn't really bother me, I can understand someone with limited gaming dollars not being thrilled by Jim's approach. With all the quality titles that come out this time of year, some people have to plan what games to buy and not knowing what (or if) Jim is releasing could put a kink in their plans. Jim has every right to run things the way he wants, but I think his customers have every right to rant about it as well...

If people have a limited gaming budget and/or limited time, they can always wait to buy FOF6/TCY2/FOB/whatever at a time that works for them, can't they?

Jim has a way of doing things that are best for him and his company, I don't have an issue with that. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's best for the customer or even for some of his loyal followers.
If someone has enough money to buy one college game and Bowl Bound or whatever comes out (with no word from Jim on whether there will be a TCY2) or not, he/she will probably buy Bowl Bound. Even if Jim comes out with TCY2 a few months later, the person already has a college game (and lacks the funds to buy every game that comes out). Next fall he/she is in the same position ... do you buy an old game like TCY (which may or may not get updated) or something new which you know is coming out.
Again, not begruding Jim but surely you can see where his policy may not be best for all consumers.

Look, just reading what Jim has written recently suggests that he has no plans to release anything, anytime soon. Go ahead and buy the games you want. If he releases something before you can afford it, at least you'll have the ability to wait for the first couple of patches to buy.

Heck, I'm in youth ministry. I'd venture a guess that I'm in the bottom 10% of the income bracket of his customers, and money has never been a concern when determing whether or not to buy a text sim. My available free time and perceived quality of the product make that decision for me.

Yep, that's pretty much what I was talking about. Also, there are some who only play football games during football season. With all the other stuff coming out, they might not want to pick up a TCY2 or FOF5 after the football season when they can afford it again.

I'm probably not the one to make a counter agrument on price, as I can afford to buy several titles (not like I'm loaded or anything). But if say 3 games are perceived to be of equal quality and I only have time to play 2 ... I'll probably buy the 2 that are out and play them rather than wait for a game that may/may not come out. And like Bee said, once football season is over I'm less likely to buy a college game ... rather I'll wait it out until next season.
Now if I knew TCY2 as coming out first week of November, I probably wouldn't invest time or money becoming deeply involved in Civ4 as I would know I would only have to wait a few weeks to see how TCY2 came out.

Ok, so I techinically got it wrong. Since we're now in late 2005 though, I'm not sure my error matters much. Also, we have no guarantee that the "news releases" will be about game(s), although i have no idea what else they would be about.

Gaming history, even with the good ones like FBCB and TCY, would suggest that at some point, even if BBCF is rock solid, that a time will come in March or April next year that I'm bored with BBCF, don't have any new games, and would buy TCY2 or Random New College Football Text Game to give 'em a shot.

THE FUTURE
As we enter 2004, the future remains uncertain. As I've reached six years "unemployed", I hope to continue to make Solecismic Software my career. Angela and I had a baby boy, Gregory, in March of 2003, and we're fortunate that the company has been successful enough to allow her to spend all of her time raising him.

Read that blurb like we read the baseball union's press release on the timing of the release of Palmeiro's steroid test results. Both sentences, alone, are (or may be) factually correct, but together, they imply more than they literally say. He's not ready to release info on the new game yet. And there will be news releases later in 2005. There's nothing connecting them, though. The news release could be a December 2005 posting that simply says info on the new game will be provided in 2006, if the game is ready. He hasn't committed to a release in 2005, or even an announcement of a release in 2005.

I had a long reponse to this explaining my methodology about two or three iterations of this item before. Someone could cut and paste that response here. I'm sure it still applies. It would be easier if Weiner had just bumped the old item instead of posting a new one. That way my response would be front and center. But to each his own. I think there's a difference between the two threads.
The previous one was one discussing the opinion that your methodology hurts your business (which I happen to disagree with). This one seems to be more about the opinion that your methodology makes it difficult for some of your customers (whatever percentage that might be who have limited finances or limited time). I really don't think your response in the other thread addresses those issues. While the two issues are related, I don't see them as identical.
Edit:
Just to clarify...I don't think your methodology is a bad decision from your side. It's probably actually a good decision in the long run. But I can see how that methodology can have a negative effect on some of your customers (albeit probably a relatively small percentage as Ben suggests) and why some people will get annoyed.

I find it humorous that recently someone (too lazy to look who) said that Blackie said waaaay back (about 5 years ago) that he had a big announcement to make and teased us then with a FOF-related release. Now, he's almost doing the same thing bitching about it.

Why? I didn't post anything about a fake release or anything like that.
Everyone's allowed a rant now and then.
I wasn't gettin on you...I was poking fun at the aristocracy here. ;)
My birthday is coming up. Jim's games have a history of projected release dates around that time. (Nov. 1)

"And then my tongue, I suppose. I killed you too quickly the last time, a mistake I don't intend to duplicate tonight."
"I wasn't finished! The next thing you lose will be your left eye, followed by your right."
"And then my ears! I understand, let's get on with it!"
"Wrong! Your ears you keep, and I'll tell you why: So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish.
I am always amazed when I read this. And, I wonder if Jim was retiring when he left the "employed" world behind? Exactly how much money could an older FOF and an ancient TCY bring in this year in 2005?
Some time I am amzed how much people can live on. I also know that Jim recently bought some new property and that probably can't be from his 2005 game money.
Maybe he needs to start thinking about a College fund for the little one. :D

After reading Arlie get taken to task because Bowl Bound was delayed due to the birth of his child and making sure the game works right, I certainly can see where Jim's philosophy comes from.
What I'd like to see is something on the vague side such as:
I'm developing a product. Working on a x timescale and as policy will release details after it is in late beta.
-or-
While many things are in the pipeline, do not expect a release of anything this year.
Hopefully it would give Jim the leeway to develop at his own pleasure and us stop asking every five seconds, "Is it out yet?"
Just my thoughts.

Back to the original topic for a second...
Someone needs to explain something to me. Here are two scenarios:
A) Jim doesn't release any information about what he's working on or when it will be released. People start a bunch of threads like this, wondering what Jim is working on and when it will be released, and complaining that he won't give up any information.
B) Jim comes here and posts what he's working on, and gives an approximate release date with the stipulation that it is only an estimate and subject to delay. The release date comes, the game is not ready, so he comes on here and posts that the game has been delayed and may not be ready for another month or two. Maybe two months later, it is still not ready, so he posts again that the game is still not ready, and may be delayed yet another month or two.
Ok, some people are never satisfied, and those people would complain about either of these scenarios. But from Jim's standpoint, how is either one of these worse than the other? If he choses scenario B, and the game is delayed, how does that hurt him? Sure he may lose sales from people who get tired of waiting, but he runs the same risk with scenario A. As has been pointed out, if people at least know the game is coming, they may postpone a purchase from of a competitor.
I think if he choses scenario B, and he at least comes here and gives a brief update every once in a while, I think that will keep at least 90% of us happy. If he choses A, it just leaves people in the dark, and that doesn't make anyone happy.

Yeah but if its delayed, its delayed. Isn't it better to know that its delayed than to not even know whether it is even being worked on?

How to find out information about Front Office Whatever: The Next Game:
1. We need a volunteer.
2. This volunteer must move to New Hampshire and assume a new identity.
3. His new identity will be a gay hairdresser. He will find a job at Mrs. Solecismic's hair salon.
4. He will then casually bump into her at the supermarket and strike up a conversation.
FOF Undercover: Ahhh! Girl, I didn't know you shopped here! When are you coming in again?
Mrs: Blah blah blah blah (woman speak, whatever they talk about.)
FOF: We should get together some day. You can come over to my house. Michael is never at home...
Mrs: My Jim is always at home.
FOF: He's not out of work, is he?
Mrs: No, he works at home.
FOF: What does he do?
Mrs: He is a game designer. Text based sims.
FOF: OH, I LOVE THE SIMS!!! I play it all the time.
Mrs: No, he designs sports games.
FOF: Oh. I'm not into sports. Any chance he's working on one for us girls?
Mrs: Not really. Right now he's working on _____________.
...and then, we will know the truth! At which point our secret agent will post the info on the board, and make the decision whether to return to his empty life, or continue his new, tastefully decorated life.
