If an American playing a proffesional sport in another country yelled "America" into the camera every oppurtunity he had like Ozzie Guillen yells for Venezuella...

He'd be hung...

Personally, I would think that somebody is trying too hard.

I think it would depend on the country. In Egypt it wouldn't go over very well. In Australia or Japan it might get a better reaction.

I think the difference is that there are a large number of American professional athletes who are successful, whereas, Venezuela probably has a very small number so when something like this happens, it means alot more. More power to him.

The operative word here is "athlete", a designation that absolves a multitude of sins in and of itself. If the American athlete is a star, I would assume that the philosophy of "just win baby" will protect him or her from any attempts at lynching...
