For the times when i want a rest from sport sims, i would like to play a deep RPG. The last one i played was the first Baldurs' gate a few years ago and it was fun.

As i know there are some RPG fans here, could you guys recomend me one?

It must be single player not multi, with a deep history, some choices about how to develop my guy etc. Awesome graphics are not needed. 2 years old max so it will run without problems on modern computers/winXP.

Thanks in advance.

What is this PEE-SEE thing you speak of?

Sorry, Icy, I got nothing.
Now, consoles....I could give you some advice. Last PC RPG I played was Diablo II. Really not a bad game, either on your own OR as a team online...

Thanks guys, will look for that ones. What about the online ones? is there any real RPG online? i mean, not only where you gain rank killing all the noobs and all the fun is that.

I'd check out Dungeon Siege II as well. There's a thread on the board someplace about it.

If you are looking for a pure RPG game then I would recommend Planescape Torment. It was made by the same people that did Baldurs Gate/Neverwinter Nights. The entire thing is pretty much story/dialogue driven and doesn't contain a whole lot of fighting so it won't be for everyone. It will run on XP and should run you about $15.

Morrowind.

Though while it's two years old, it still may not run to well.

If you played and liked the first Baldur's Gate, then I would highly recommend Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn as well as Icewind Dale I and II. All are from the same guys (Black Isle/Bioware) and are very enjoyable the first time through.

I've heard a lot of great things about Torment: Planescape, but if you didn't play it when it first came out, chances are you will be horrified by the archaic graphics.

Morrowind is good if you're looking for open-ended, first-person RPG. I played it a lot for a short period of time. The world is just so lifeless. There are mods people made to help with that and add content, but I haven't checked many of them out. But I am eagerly awaiting Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivian. Not really a sequal, but set in the same world.

Neverwinter Nights is great. The single-player campaign that comes with the main game is "meh". But the two expansions (you can get the main gane plus the 2 expansions in one cheap box by now) are pretty good. Plus there are hundreds of user-made modules (stories, campagins) out there. Most are crap, but some are really well done.

I would recommend none of the above but to go with Gothic and Gothic II, if you are inclined to more action/adventure type RPG. It appears that Gothic II Gold is coming out this week which would include the Night of the Raven expansion. Just my .01.

What he said. Torment: Planescape is the best RPG of all time in my opinion (although I played it when it first game out as well as again a few months ago.)

Thanks for the suggestions, i'm also thinking about signing up for any MMORPG like WOW or EQII. Also the free Anarchy Online looks good.

BTW, have you guys tried this online free MMORPG? It looks good.

Baldur's Gate II
Planescape: Torment
KOTOR

And if you haven't yet played Fallout and/or Fallout 2, YOU. MUST. GET. THAT. GAME.

The Fallout series is the best RPG series of all time. Even after Baldur's Gate and KOTOR and all the rest.

I'm fairly sure I played Fallout and Fallout 2 on my XP machine. However, I think I had to jump through some hoops. However, I didn't love the game like some people do. It was a good RPG, but I'd put at least 5-10 games above it on my list of all time RPG's.

Morrowind is interesting to me. I have played it, but if you are away from it for about a week, you can easily forget which quests you were doing and how far along you were in them. The Fallout series is really good. Heck I even liked Fallout Tactics. But there are some really good indie RPGs as well.

This is the latest game. The graphics aren't the best, but the gameplay, storyline, and roleplaying elements are really, really good. Try out the demo and may find yourself hooked.
Geneforge 3 (http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/geneforge3/)

This one is like a Fate clone. This is the kind of game that you can play when you have a limited amount of time to play. You can easily play this for less than an hour and get a lot of things accomplished. Very nice deversion.
Fate (http://www.playfate.com/)

And here is one I recently posted in the Shareware thread. It is a roleplaying game set in 16th century Asia:
Anito: Defend a Land Enraged (http://www.aninoentertainment.com/products/anito/index.php)

One thing I have to ask, is there any recent RPGs that have the sense of humor that Fallout did? It seems most RPGs after the Fallout series have taken themselves waaay too seriously (though Planescape: Torment had a few amusing parts).

(To THIS day, the best random encounter in an RPG is when in Fallout 1 when you end up in a part of the desert with a carcass of a whale that looked like it fell from the sky.. LOL!)

Definitely agree. Never quite understood the cult following behind it. Felt a lot to me like putting a slightly more post-apocalyptic Shadowrun to PC.

SIBecause it kicked ass man! ;)

Seriously, I wouldn't put any RPG above Fallout, and perhaps only Civilization II and GTA III ahead of it on my best games list.

The setting, the SPECIAL system, the humor, the story (with its twists and shocks) = utter gaming perfection... though it was fairly buggy for some people.

No magic, but mutants and guns form the basis of the game. Basically you start off as being sent off by your 'vault', which you used to survive the nuke war, to find a new water chip because your valut's chip got faulty.

Sure you can date yourself, but Grim Fandango is not a roleplaying game. It is strictly an adventure game. If you wanted to date an old roleplaying game, you should have mentioned Wasteland or that old Buck Rogers space combat/roleplaying game (I can never remember the exact title). I played both of these game back in the day.

I have to agree that these games is a true classic roleplaying game. Although I have like Neverwinter Nights and the mods created, I can still remember starting up the game listening to "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" in the intro. It nicely blends the 1950s with science fiction and has a great RPG system in place along with good humor and a touch of graphic violence.

You are right that Fandang wasn't a true RPG...I actually thought I had mentioned that..but in re-read, I didn't. It just seemed to really draw me in, in the same manner that Planescape torment did. In a completely odd way, because I'm usually not drawn to either Adventure games or RPGs for that manner. Both of those games sucked me in though.

Wasteland...I had some trouble getting a free version of it to run, and never managed to try it. I bought it too, shortly after it came out, but somehow never got into it. Probably cause I was spending too much time playing Earl Weaver.

That game had sooo much atmosphere and did it without the 3d graphics of today. The world just felt real, with fleshed out characters and great locations. Dogmeat is still my favorite group character (speaking of which, I liked the fact that you really didn't have much control over your group... you could give them inventory and give them basic instructions, but they did the rest... including mess up. Made it seem all the more fun).

Brotherhood of Steel baby!

edit: I TOTALLY forgot about the great voice acting in Fallout 1 (this thread made me go back to "No Mutants Allowed" for the first time in forever. Tony Shaloub, Richard Dean Anderson, Richard Moll, Brad Garett. Never realized all these former and future stars participated. Makes it even better :).
