HURRICANE WILSON

RALIEGH -- The Carolina Hurricanes announced the re-opening of all their NHL facilities today with the beginning of the 2005-06 season looming. "Everyone is antsy to get back" said hot shot prospect Eric Staal, "this has been a long time off but now we're back and ready to show these fans that the new NHL is everything people want to see and more".

With the Hurricanes looking to make a splash, Peter Karmanos decided to kick things off with a bang by firing GM Jim Rutherford and replacing him with former Cedar Rapids Rough Riders (of the USHL) GM Danny Wilson. The move came as a shock to many pundits but Karmanos said it's what this organization needed.

"Wilson knows how to win with youngsters, and that's what we need to do. With kids like (Eric) Staal and (Jack) Johnson in our system, we have to be able to evolve them into the superstars we believe them to be. Wilson can do all that and more, I am certain" said Karmanos in his press release.

New GM Danny Wilson was unavailable for comments however, as he was feverishly working at putting together a training camp for the upcoming month.

AP report.

Hahaha. Nope. We're rebuilding this year but we're going to be young and hungry. Up tempo physical hockey. We'll be fun to watch, but our defense will be slow until we add some bodies.

GLEN WESLEY BLOWN AWAY

RALIEGH -- Danny Wilson made his first big move as a GM today as he shipped away defensemen Glenn Wesley to the Nashville Predators for firey forward Jordin Tootoo and a 4th round draft pick.

"We loved Wes here, but it wasn't in our interest to keep him around. We wanted him to have a chance on a contendor and right now, we're nowhere near that point. I'm just being honest. What we got in return is a draft pick which is a must to stockpile in this new NHL, but also Jordin Tootoo, a 22 year old ball of energy who can emerge as a top guy on our PK and a fixture on our energy line. Needless to say, I believe both sides win."

Neither Wesley nor Tootoo were available for comment.

Exhibition Game #1

Florida 0 @ Carolina 4

Eric Staal with a great game, netting a goal and helping on two others. He was rewarded with a 10 rating.

Cam Ward turned away 24 shots for the shut out and also had his own 10 rating.

Light on the exhibition games as we only play three, we finished up this week with two more.

Buffalo Sabres 3 @ Carolina Hurricanes 4

Pavel Brendl with a first period natural hat trick and an assist in the nice W.

Carolina 2 @ Anaheim 4

Brendl has 2 assists to give him 6 points on our last 6 goals. Tough loss to end the exhibition season but the teams amped to open things up for real.

2005-06 OPENING NIGHT LINEUP

LINE ONE

LW: Corey Stillamn
C: Eric Staal
RW: Justin Williams
D: Oleg Tverdovsky
D: Bret Hedican

Lots of passing and crashing the net out of the top line.

LINE TWO

LW: Erik Cole
C: Josef Vasicek
RW: Radim Vrbata
D: Frantisek Kaberle
D: Aaron Ward

A little more aggression out of this line, anchored by Cole (NHL #9 LW). Should be able to score but also provide some physical presence.

LINE THREE

LW: Ray Whitney
C: Rob Brind'amour
RW: Jordin Tootoo
D: Jesse Wallin
D: Andrew Hutchinson

This is the line that'll be fun to watch. Two crafty vets with a young kid looking to make his presence felt. Big hitting, and lots of tenacity out of these three.

LINE FOUR

LW: Kevyn Adams
C: Matt Cullen
RW: Pavel Brendl

Solid fourth line that can play some D and score. I'd like to say they're one of the better fourth lines in the Eastern conference .. But that does't say much.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Keeping them as the top two lines are for now. Will change for sure though.

GOALIE

Cam Ward

Rookie netminder. This will incur growing pains but it's something for the future of the team.

SHOOTOUT

1. Eric Staal
2. Corey Stillman
3. Justin Williams
4. Erik Cole
5. Josef Vasicek

10/5/05

Carolina 0 @ New York Islanders 3

Rick DiPietro earns first star with the shut out which earned him a 10 rating. We give up three first period goals and then play it even. A tough loss though, that proves offense may be hard to come by this year.

Erik Cole and Eric Cairnes do have a fight. Good to see some tenacity from the club.

10/07/05

Pre-game Notes

- Vasciek moves up to 1st line LW
- Stillman moves down to 2nd line C

Anaheim 3 @ Carolina 1

Vasciek scores, but unfortunatley Anaheim nets a goal each period. Shots were close as ANA had 31 to our 30, but in the end we didn't have the juice to close the deal.

To make matters worse team captain Erik Cole is out two weeks with an ACL sprain.

10/09/05

Pre-game Notes

- Stillman back up at 1st line LW
- Whitney and Brind'amour up to 2nd line LW & C respectivley
- Kevyn Adams and Josef Vasieck play 3rd line LW & C respectivley
- Mike Zigomanis takes over 4th line LW
- Gerber starts in net.

Ottawa 4 @ Carolina 2

Williams from Cullen and Kaberle on both goals (both PP) but Ottawa has two of their own and a SH goal. Kaberle was a - 3, going to show that his D isn't up to par with the O. Gerber was decent at best vs Ottawa, turning away 20 of 24 shots. Cam Ward will be back in net next game.

10/11/05

Pre-game notes:

- Cam Ward starts in net

Toronto 5 @ Carolina 2

Jeff O'Neil torches his former club with 2 goals and 2 assists, thus earning first star. Radim Vrbata has two assists for the Canes but we were thoroughly outclassed by the East's first place team. Our defense is awful, and our offense isn't good enough right now to make up the difference.

Eric Staal needs to produce soon or will see a demotion to the second line.

10/14/05

Pre-game Notes:

- No changes

Carolina 4 @ Atlanta 3 (Shootout)

Vasicek scores a goal in regulation, then scores the 5th and deciding goal in the shootout that featured 10 shooters and 7 goals. Big win for the Canes as it's their first on the road. Staal is playing better but still cannot score. Jodin Tootoo gets 15 minutes in penalties with a 5 for fighting and a 10 minute misconduct. He did win the fight against Ramzi Abid.

Given how the real-life Canes have fared to this point, I don't think it's going to be possible to replicate what they've actually done, simply because just about every prognostication I ever read in the preseason had Carolina among the five worst teams in the entire league. It's probably why Staal is struggling in your world. He wasn't expected to be that great this year. He is only 21, after all, and still developing. Whoda thought he'd be player of the month for October before the season started?

Indeed. I thought this team would be pretty bad. Pre-season report said 27th in the NHL. Staal will be fine once we figure out who to play him with.

KABERLE TO LA

RALIEGH -- The LA Kings bolstered their defense today adding Frantiserk Kaberle from the Carolina Hurricanes for fellow defensemen Tim Gleason and a prospect.

Kaberle has struggled early for Carolina definsivley, though his 4 points in 5 games was near the team for a fledgingly Canes offense. But with Carolina looking to build a solid foundation, the Kings offering up the 22 year old Gleason was something GM Danny Wilson had to jump at.

"Tim is a former first round pick who hasn't entered his prime yet. He will play this year for us and we expect solid contributions from him as our team continues to grow. Between Gleason, Wallin and Johnson, our D is looking solid for the future" said Wilson.

Kaberle is in the final year of his contract and is making $1.3 million this year.

Pre-game notes:

- Tim Gleason & Andrew Hutchinson make up the 2nd D Pairing
- Nik Wallin & Aaron Ware make up the 3rd D Pairing

New Jersey 5 @ Carolina 2

Penalties killed us as the Devils capitalize on 3 power plays. Tim Gleason had a 7 rating in his debut, with an even rating which wasn't bad all things considered. Colin White killed us for Jersey with 2 goals and 2 assists, earning 1st star.

Justin Williams was our lone bright spot with a goal and an assist.

Our intensity keeps going however as Aaron Ward and Langdon fight with Ward taking the contest.

10/19/05

Pre-game notes:

- Tim Gleason & Aaron Ward are the 2nd D pairing
- Nik Wallin & Andrew Hutchinson are the 3rd D Pairing
- Stillman/Vasciek/Williams is the 1st line
- Staal/Brind'amour/Brendl is the 2nd line
- Whitney/Cullen/Tootoo is the 3rd line
- Adams/Zigomanis/Vrbata is the 4th line
- Martin Gerber starts in net

Carolina 3 @ New Jersey 4

Tough loss. We storm back with three 3rd period goals but give up the game winning tally with 4 minutes left. Cullen with a two point night, but Eric Staal once again struggles with a 6 rating. He's yet to get a point this year so we levy a warning for his poor play.

Elias wins first star with a goal and assist and a + 4.

Tootoo loses a fight with Oliwa.

10/21/05

Pre-game notes:

- Whitney/Cullen/Vrbata is the 2nd line
- Staal/Brind'amour/Tootoo is the 3rd line
- Adams/Zigomanis/Brendl is the 4th line
- Cam Ward starts in net

Carolina 3 @ Atlanta 2

Thank God for Atlanta. Stillman and Williams prove big time as Stillman assists on two Williams goals in the 3rd, the first tying the game with 8 minutes left, and then the game winner with 1:50 left. The Thrashers were lead by 3rd star Illya Kovalchucks two goals but it wasn't enough. Eric Staal still is pointless but did step it up with an 8 rating.

It should be noted there weren't any fights tonight.

10/23/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes.

Carolina 1 @ Minnesota 2

Eric Staal gets his first point of the year with an assist on Hutchinsons goal. But it's all for naught in a physical game where both goalies played out of their minds. Cam Ward was 2nd star with 35 saves, while Manny Fernandez was first star turning away 39 shots in the victory.

10/23/05

Pre-game notes

- Erik Cole is back!
- Cole/Vasciek/Williams is 1st line
- Stillman/Staal/Brind'amour is 2nd line
- Whitney/Adams/Tootoo is 3rd line
- Vrbata/Cullen/Brdnel is the 4th line

Carolina 3 @ Colorado 1

Two PP goals and a strong game from Cam Ward gives us a solid road win. Stillman is 2nd star with two assists, while Brind'Amour is first star with his GW goal. Our discipline has been much better as of late, with three games without a fight. Finally stuff is going somewhat right for us.

Pre-game notes:

- Erik Cole is going to be shadowing Elias.
- Jordin Tootoo is going to shadowing Scott Gomez.

New Jersey 2 @ Carolina 1

Maltias earns first star with both Devils goals. Ray Whitney supplies the only goal for the Canes in what was another tough loss. I knew offense would be a problem but this is unreal. We're contemplating changing to a more physical offensive game to utilizie our grinders.

The good thing is Cole and Tootoo hold Elias and Gomez to 6 ratings. We succeeded in our first objective but it didn't give us the W.

10/28/05

Pre-game notes:

- Erik Cole be will shadowing Mike Modano
- Jordin Tootoo will be shadowing Bill Guerin
- Eric Staal moves to the 1st line C
- Josef Vasciek drops to 2nd line C

Carolina 3 @ Dallas 4 (OT)

Welp, Tootoo shadowing Guerin didn't work too well, as Guerin nets a hat trick, including the game winner in OT. Lot's of 6's for us tonight, but Justin Williams did have a 9 rating with another goal and assist. He currently is 17th in the NHL in scoring which is something to cherish with how bad our offense is.

Tootoo did redeem himself somewhat though, beating Steve Ott up in a fight.

10/30/05

Pre-game notes:

- Eric Staal is sent to Lowell in the AHL
- Stillman/Brind'amour/Williams is Line 1
- Whitney/Cullen/Vrbata is Line 2
- Cole/Vasciek/Adams is Line 3
- Brendl/Zigomanis/Tootoo is Line 4
- Martin Gerber gets the nod in goal

Chicago 3 @ Carolina 4

1st star: Justin Williams (CAR) 1 g, 1 a, 2 pt, + 2
2nd star: Pavel Brendl (CAR) 2 g, 0 a, 2 pt, + 2
3rd star: Mark Bell (CHI) 1 g, 1 a, 2 pt, + 2

Big win to get back on track for the Canes. Williams continues to be our best player with another multipoint game and Brendel excels on the 4th line. Gerber is solid in net stopping 24 shots backing us into a 4-3 W.

Mike Brown and Aaron Ward get in a fight that gets Brown kicked out for instigating with 10 minutes left.

Carolina 2 @ Detroit 3

1st star: Mikael Samuelsson (DET) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 2
2nd star: Brendan Shanahan (DET) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/ + 1
3rd star: Andrew Hutchinson (CAR) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/ E

Our best offensive player tonight is a rookie defensemen. We played hard again but Gerber gives up 3 goals on 18 shots, ruining a fantastic defensive effort by the Canes. We cannot afford our goalies to play awful when we can't score goals to make up for their mistakes.

11/2/05

Pre-game notes:

- Cam Ward starts the back half of two games in two days

New York Islanders 4 @ Carolina 3 (Shootout)

1st star: Corey Stillman (CAR) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/+ 2
2nd star: Mike York (NYI) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/ + 2
3rd star: Rob Brind'amour (CAR) 0 G/2 A/2 PT/+ 1

A tough loss in a shootout that featured 5 goals between 8 shooters, capped off by Mike York's winner. Andrew Hutchinson added another goal, proving to be quite an offensive force for us on the point. The Stillman/Brind'amour/Williams line has played well for us at least, giving us something positive to take from this.

11/4/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes

Los Angeles 4 @ Carolina 3

1st star: Luc Robitallie (LA) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 3
2nd star: Dustin Brown (LA) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 2
3rd star: Lubomir Visnovsky (LA) 0 G/2 A/2 PT + 2

We give up two third period goals, including the game winner with under 2 minutes left to once again walk out losers in a close game. Stillman notches another goal in the defeat. Once again our inability to win at home, or close games for that matter, is killing us with so many winnable games already have been played.

Erik Cole and Jeff Cowan square off. The fighting spirit is back at least.

11/6/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes. We're looking for some continuity.

Philidelphia 5 @ Carolina 4 (OT)

1st star: Simon Gagne (PHI) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 1 (GWG)
2nd star: Kim Johnsson (PHI) 0 G/2 A/2 PT/E
3rd star: Justin Williams (CAR) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 2

Wow. We score to take the lead with 3 minutes to go in the game. So what happens? Mike Richards scores 15 seconds later to tie the game, and then with a minute left in OT Simon Gagne wins it for the Flyers. We've now lost four consecutive games by a goal, which has seemingly snakebitten this team. Something drastic needs to happen or else we're going to be in for an even longer season.

11/8/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes.

Washington 6 @ Carolina 3

1st star: Ben Clymer (WAS) 2 G/1 A/3 PT/+ 1 (GWG)
2nd star: Jeff Halpern (WAS) 2 G/2 A/4 PT/+ 2
3rd star: Darius Zubrus (WAS) 1 G/2 A/3 PT/+ 3

Totally dominated. A four goal second put us down for the count. Only Erik Cole (1 G, 1 A) and Radim Vrbata (1 G) recieved 8 ratings. Looks like time for another roster shake up, because we seemingly didn't do anything right tonight.

1st star: Ed Jovanovski (VAN) 1 G/2 A/3 PT/+ 1
2nd star: Oleg Tverdovsky (CAR) 1 G/2 A/3 PT/+ 1
3rd star: Justin Williams (CAR) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/- 1

Tough one as we lose in a shootout 1-0. Ward stopped Naslund and Bertuzzi but Morrison snuck one in. Somehow Josef Balej isn't named a star for the Canucks, as he has a hat trick in 4:26 of ice time. We are a scrappy team who plays in lots of close games, and if we can get a few, maybe we can learn to pull these ones out.

11/13/05

Pre-game notes:

- Eric Staal, as unimpressive as he was in the AHL (1 A) is back up to see if he got the point

- Staal/Vrbata/Cole is the 2nd line

- Mike Commodore is playing D to give Hedican a night off, this will be a showcase for MC

Carolina 2 @ Chicago 4

1st star: Mark Bell (CHI) 0 G/2 A/2 PT/+ 2
2nd star: Rob Brind'amour (CAR) 0 G/2 A/2 PT/E
3rd star: Rene Borque (CHI) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 2

Tough loss as Borque nets the GW with 4 minutes left. Chicago also added an empty netter making it 4-2. Eric Staal was shaky with a 7 rating. If he doesn't turn it up, he's back to Lowell, and then who knows. Justin Williams was solid again with 2 goals, and Cam Ward had 29 saves but it wasn't enough.

11/15/05

Pre-game notes:

- Eric Staal moves to 4th line C
- Matt Cullen moves up to 2nd line C
- Hutchinson & Tverdovsky are 1st D
- Gleason & Commedore are 2nd D
- Ward & Wallin are 3rd D

Carolina 2 @ Ottawa 4

1st star: Vaclav Varada (OTA) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 2 (GWG)
2nd star: Bryan Smolisnki (OTA) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 2
3nd star: Jason Spezza (OTA) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 1

The Varada/Smolinski/Spezza line pummeled us tonight. Matt Cullen had two helpers and Justin Williams scored again but it was all worth nothing in an unforgettable game. We can't take away moral victories for close games, because they're worthless.

11/17/05

Pre-game notes:

- Bret Hedican replaces Nik Wallin
- Bret Hedican & Aaron Ward are 3rd D pairing

Carolina 2 @ Tampa Bay 3

1st star: Brad Richards (TB) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/- 1
2nd star: Vincent Lecaviliar (TB) 0 G/3 A/3 PT/- 1
3rd star: Dan Boyle (TB) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/E

We go up 2-0, then give up 3 unanswered in the 2nd to lose 3-2. Two of the goals were on the PP. I hate to keep going off about close games but it's the simpe truth of the matter. Alas, we'll keep fighting, but thankfully it's looking like we'll draft in the top 3.

Pre-game notes:

- We fine Eric Staal a weeks play for his horrid performance. He's not happy, guess what? Neither am I.

Carolina 2 @ Nashville 4

1st star: Steve Sullivan (NAS) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 1
2nd star: Oleg Tverdovsky (CAR) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/E
3rd star: Kris Beech (NAS) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 1

Sigh. What else can I say? Cam Ward plays awful and our stagnant offense continues to be lead by our defense, sans Justin Williams.

11/21/05

Pre-game notes:

- Martin Gerber starts in goal

Carolina 3 @ Anaheim 1

1st star: Josef Vasicek (CAR) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 2 (GWG)
2nd star: Jeff Lupul (ANA) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/E
3rd star: Erik Cole (CAR) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 2

Big win on the road against the #3 team in the West. Eric Staal plays well gaining an 8 rating and an assist, and Vasciek and Cole along with Vrbata are all over the ice creating havoc. Martin Gerber is big in net with 30 saves and will be getting more looks now after this performance. A very clean game too, with only 5 penalties called all night.

11/25/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes

Tampa Bay 0 @ Carolina 3

1st star: Martin Gerbet (CAR) 27 saves, 10 rating
2nd star: Justin Williams (CAR) 1 G/2 A/3 PT/+ 3/10 rating
3rd star: Corey Stillman (CAR) 2 G/1 A/3 PT/+ 3/9 rating

Wow. Big win. The Stillman/Brind'amour/Williams lines dominated St. Louis/Vinny/Richards en route to a big win. Gerber is playing out of his dome now and we're pleased to hopefully have found a #1 goalie for now. With that said, Ward will still see time when we can allow it. Again, we keep it a clean game, with four penalties total (2 aside) and it gives us a big time victory.

11/27/05

Pre-game notes:

-Kevyn Adams replaces Zigomanis as 4th line LW
- We make contract offers to Justin Williams and Erik Cole

Carolina 0 @ Toronto 2

1st star: Ed Belfour (TOR) 28 saves, 10 rating
2nd star: Mariusz Czerkawski (TOR) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 1
3rd star: Jeff O'Neil (TOR) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 1

O'Neil torches us again. Toronto, who's slid down to 10th place with injuries to Lindros and Allison get just enough offense and a great game from Belfour to win 2-0. Gerber has another solid game in net, with 25 saves but it isn't enough tonight with the lack of offense. Still, this recent stretch has been good for a struggling team like ours.

11/29/05

Pre-game notes:

- Justin Williams inks a 3 year deal worth $4.1 million before the game

Carolina 4 @ New York Islanders 2

1st star: Rob Brind'amour (CAR) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 2
2nd star: Justin Williams (CAR) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/+ 3
3rd star: Brent Hedican (CAR) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/E

Justin Williams must've loved that new contract, as he nets a goal 12 seconds in. We went up 2-0, but the Isles battled back to tie it up in the second. But with 13 minutes left Rob Brind'amour intercepted a pass and skated in on a breakaway, giving us a 3-2 lead. Williams added the nail to the coffin with an empty netter, assissted by Gerber who was solid again to give us another big time win.

11/30/05

Pre-game notes:

- Erik Cole signs a two year deal worth $3.4 million
- No changes

Carolina 3 @ Washington 4 (Shootout)

1st star: Jared Aulin (WAS) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 1 (GWG)
2nd star: Andrew Hutchinson (CAR) 0 G/2 A/2 PT/E
3rd star: Oleg Tverdovsky (CAR) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/E

We battled back to tie it but we couldn't pull it out in the shootout. Our first to shooters scored, but Ray Whitney was stuffed. Meanwhile all three Caps shooters scored to give them the W. Still, we gain a point in defeat and we keep on trudging along.

I go to see Eric Staal's contract demands ... he wants a three year deal worth 15 mil!

Needless to say, there could be something big coming in the next update or two.

you seem to have quita a short leash with the kid....couldnt you just keep playing him on top lines, and qualify him at the end of the season?...or has he pissed you off enough that you are really gonna ship him out...(TO TORONTO hopefully...:P)

I'm so glad this isn't happening in real life. It could very well be that the difference between your world and what's really happened is that Staal has been on fire to start. It doesn't seem like anyone else is too out-of-whack besides him.

To answer Johnnys comment..

He has played awful. His average rating is a 6.86 and when I sent him to the AHL his rating was a 6.45 in 8 games.

I may try him back on the 1st or 2nd line to jump start him but I just don't know. The deals I've looked at for him are not that great yet, so we'll go until March and see. I'll probably look for a deal then unless something awesome comes up, but I refuse to invest $15 mil in someone who isn't doing anything in the pros or minors.

As far as Packs comments ..

Justin Williams has been awesome. He, Stillman and Brind'amour are awesome together so it's worked quite well.

this Eric Stall thing fascinates me...im very interested in seeing what happens....I dont know how indepth the game is, but im curious as to your options...

Obviously..
1) sign him for 15 mil over 3...NO WAY....not for a kid that age playing at that level
2) Trade him...I'd think it would be a mistake to trade a kid that age, with that talent at this point...he should have 4-5 years of developing still
3) qualify him, and see what you can do over the summer in terms of negoiatiating a contract, BTW, whats is qualifying price?

It's a tough situation, but id keep throwing him out there in situations he can succeed, seeing as this season is becoming a rebuilding year. Enjoying your thread, keep it up

Pre-game notes:

- No changes.

Washington 5 @ Carolina 4 (OT)

1st star: Alexander Ovechkin (WAS) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/+ 2
2nd star: Peter Sykora (WAS) 0 G/3 A/3 PT/+ 1
3rd star: Radim Vrbata (CAR) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/+ 1

Ovechkin is the man. He's damn good and it's scary that he's not even 20 yet. We put up a valiant effort in what was an offensive showcase as each team had over 40 shots on net. D went by the wayside and the fans were treated with an excellent display of talent. Justin Williams continues to show us he was worth his extension with another goal and assist.

12/4/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes

Buffalo 3 @ Carolina 4

1st star: Ray Whitney (CAR) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/+ 2
2nd star: Justin Williams (CAR) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 2
3rd star: Tim Connolly (BUF) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/+ 1

We showed amazing resiliancy today. After giving up 3 straight to go down 3-1 in the second, we rallied in the third with 3 of our own in the last 6 minutes. Justin Williams tied it up with 1:34 left, and then 20 seconds later Ray Whitney is awarded a penalty shot and buries it. This is a game that could help us carry momentum over as Buffalo is currently 3rd in the East. Big win.

12/8/05

Pre-game notes:

- Eric Staal is now 2nd line C
- Matt Cullen moves to the 4th line C
- We tell Staal's linemates, Whitney and Vrbata to shoot more

Carolina 2 @ Florida 3 (Shootout)

1st star: Kristian Huliesius (FLA) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 1
2nd star: Corey Stillman (CAR) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/E
3rd star: Radim Vrbata (CAR) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/E

Well, I'll be damned. Eric Staal assists on both goals and scores in the shootout, but it's all to no avail, as he is the only one to net one. Serge Payer scores to win it for Florida in the shootout leaving us with another loss in extended play. If we could've won 3 or 4 of these games we'd be in the playoff hunt but we just can't seem to get over the hump. Still, we manage to take something from tonight in Staal's case.

12/10/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes

Carolina 3 @ New York Islanders 5

1st star: Oleg Kvasha (NYI) 1 G/2 A/3 PT/+ 2
2nd star: Mike York (NYI) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 2
3rd star: Brent Sopel (NYI) 1 G/1 A/2 PT/+ 3

We played tough but the Isles are a damn solid club. They peppered Gerber with 49 shots and he played his ass off stop 44 of them but they were too much. We're focusing more on run and gun hockey and with such weak D behind us it's leaving the goalies on an island but it's how we're going to play so we gotta' take our lumps.

Staal with an 8 rating in the loss. Is he finally getting it?

12/14/05

Pre-game notes:

- NYR coach Tom Remmey is fired
- We keep lines the same

Florida 1 @ Carolina 3

1st star: Justin Williams (CAR) 2 G/0 A/2 PT/+ 8
2nd star: Erik Cole (CAR) 1 G/0 A/1 PT/E
3rd star: Martin Gerber (CAR) 28 SV

We put pressure on net and play a solid defensive game, with another good game by Gerber. Williams keeps piling up points, and having Cole chip in is an added bonus. Staal is held off the sheets and gets a 7 rating but he did log more ice time then any other C.

Overview

We're loaded at D with plenty of good, young prospects: Johnson, Vojta, O'Brien, Lawson. We are weakest on our pro roster at forward so to say our future on the point bodes well is an understatement. Johnson will be on the pro team next year I do believe. Vojta will be in the AHL, while O'Brien will stay at BC and Lawson will be heading to Notre Dame.

Offensivley, Ladd is a guy who'll compete for a roster spot and Kahnberg looks like he too could provide a solid 4th line presence, considering his age. We're going to need to strengthen up here in the upcoming Entry Draft however, and it will be our top priority.

In net Ward is the future but right now Gerber is the man. I'd love to be able to send Ward to Lowell in the AHL but we have no other goalies under contract who can come in and play. So we'll play Ward a bit more here and there and try and acquire someone to be our legit backup. Nonetheless, we're in good shape.

Carolina 1 @ Buffalo 5

1st star: Daniel Briere (BUF) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT, + 3
2nd star: Maxim Afinigenhov (BUF) 3 G, 1 A, 3 PT, + 3
3rd star: Demitri Kalinin (BUF) 0 G, 3 A, 3 PT, + 2

Nothing to say here. We got dominated. Staal put us up 1-0 in the first but then Afinigenov had the Natural Hat Trick en route to a 4 goal second that totally buried us. We were just dominated. No other way to put it. Buffalo is top 3 in the East for a reason and they showed it tonight.

12/16/05

Pre-game notes:

- Cam Ward starts in net

Carolina 3 @ Philidelphia 2

1st star: Ray Whitney (CAR) 2 G, 0 A, 2 PT, + 2
2nd star: Radim Vrbata (CAR) 0 G, 2 A, 2 PT, + 2
3rd star: Simon Gagne (PHI) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, - 1

Ray Whitney and Radim Vrbata come up big in the last five minutes, combining on two goals to give us a big come from behind win vs a Flyers team who before the game was 8th in the Eastern Conference. Cam Ward played well in net and our defense for the most part contained Gagne and Forsberg to give us a much needed victory on the road vs a playoff contender.

12/18/05

Pre-game notes:

- No changes

Ottawa 1 @ Carolina 2

1st star: Corey Stillman (CAR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1 (GWG)
2nd star: Erik Cole (CAR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1
3rd star: Cam Ward (CAR) 24 saves, 8 rating

Another big win. Only two penalties the whole game and both were on Ottawa. We played good D and Cam Ward made timely saves. Stillman came up with a big goal and we just ran with it after that. These close games are giving me a heart attack but they're fun to watch.

12/21/05

Pre-game notes:

- Rob Brind'amour C's the 2nd line

2nd star: Radim Vrbata (CAR) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 2
3rd star: Erik Cole (CAR) 2 G, 0 A, 2 PT, + 2

Our first line did nothing, going negative on the day, but the other lines just clicked. Vasciek put up a 10 rating, and Aaron Ward was +4 as we just rolled the hapless Thrashers. This win streak is moving us up the standings, albeit slowly. Our team is gelling and Cam Ward is looking sharp after that extended time off.

2nd star: Jeff O'Neil (TOR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1
3rd star: Roman Kukumberg (TOR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, - 1

Justin Williams regains his scoring touch as he puts in the GW with 4:45 left in regulation to give us another big win. Once again we aren't penalized but once and Ward has another damn solid game to give us another big win. We're currently 9 points out of the 8th playoff spot with half the season to go. While playoffs aren't expected, it is a pleasant surprise.

2nd star: Dave Andreychuck (TB) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT, + 4
3rd star: Ruslan Fedetenko (TB) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT, + 5

Take a guess at the line that owned us? We give up 5 first period goals and from then on it wasn't worth talking about. We'll just have to move on and forget about this game.

2nd star: Alexander Ovechkin (WAS) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 1
3rd star: Brian Campbell (WAS) 0 G, 2 A, 2 PT, + 2

We again get dominated in the 1st period giving up 3 goals and can't rebound from the early defecit. Ovechkin continues his domination of us this year with two more points, and these last two games have been hard to swallow because both Washington and Tampa Bay are beatable.

1/2/06

Pre-game notes:

- Gerber starts in net
- Staal back to 2nd line C
- Jordin Tootoo signs a new 2 year deal worth $1.8 million

Boston 4 @ Carolina 1

1st star: Joe Thornton (BOS) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1
2nd star: Tom Fitzgeralrd (BOS) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1
3rd star: Sergei Samsonov (BOS) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1

What can I say? We're now fledgeling but it's not totally unexpected. We just are running into a wall and it's time to start looking ahead to next year and the years after because this year looks to be ending pretty early.

1/6/06

Pre-game notes:

- Cam Ward in net
- Tim Gleason signs a 3 year deal worth $3.3 million
- Aaron Ward signs a 3 year deal with $4.5 million
- Radim Vrbata signs a 1 year extension worth $725 K
- We ship Brent Hedican to the Sharks for a 2006 2nd round pick
- D Danny Richmond is called form Lowell to replace Hedican

Pittsburgh 5 @ Carolina 3

1st star: Sidney Crosby (PIT) 3 G, 0 A, 3 PT, E
2nd star: Radim Vrbata (CAR) 3 G, 0 A, 3 PT, - 1
3rd star: Sergei Gonchar (PIT) 0 G, 2 A, 2 PT, E

Vrbata had a natural hat trick in the first to give us a 3-0 lead but Crosby answered back with his own Natural Hat Trick in the 2nd and we couldn't get momentum back, dropping a game 5-3 to a fun to watch Penguins team.

1/7/06

Pre-game notes:

New York Rangers 3 @ Carolina 4

1st star: Michael Nylander (NYR) 3 G, 0 A, 3 PT, + 2
2nd star: Danny Richmond (CAR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 2
3rd star: Ray Whitney (CAR) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 1

Big win for us. Nylander did all the damage for the Rangers, but we kept everyone else off the sheets for the most part. Eric Staal is turning it up slowly, with his second consecutive two assist night, including an assist on Danny Richmonds GW PP goal. He is also lowering his contract demands by quite a bit, now to $2 million. We'll see where this goes but I'm happy to see him turning it up.

1/10/06

Pre-game notes:

- Glen Sather is fired as Rangers Head Coach

Carolina 1 @ Vancouver 5

1st star: Todd Bertuzzi (VAN) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 2
2nd star: Dan Cloutier (VAN) 20 saves
3rd star: Anson Carter (VAN) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT, + 2

We get dominated by a vastly superior team. That's all there is to it, really. Staal adds another assist though to make it 5 in 3 games. We knew the Canucks were a better team so there's no reason to even bother dwelling on it.

1/12/06

Pre-game notes:

-We trade Gordie Dwyer to the St. Louis Blues for a 2006 4th round pick

Carolina 1 @ Calgary 4

1st star: Jarome Iginla (CAL) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT, + 3
2nd star: Chris Simon (CAL) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 1
3rd star: Radim Vrbata (CAR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, E

Calgarys team GAA going into the game: 1.87. They're the best team in the NHL and we're one of the worst, at least in the East. What a way to start a West Coast trip then with the top two teams in the NHL? Oh well.

WJC REPORT
Held in Canada
Dec 18 - Jan 7

MONTREAL - The World Junior Championships, which is held annually over Christmas and New Years, and involves 10 of the world's best teams made up of kids ranging from 16-20 years old is widly considered some of the must entertaining hockey you'll see all year; as entertaining as the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the CHL Memorial Cup and even to an extent, Olympic Hockey.

This year was no different, and in some ways, this year could've very well been the most intriguing WJC to date. Many previous first round picks were on teams rosters, such as such previous top 5 picks as Russian Center Evgeni Malkin (PIT), USA Winger Bobby Ryan (ANA) and USA Defensemen Jack Johnson (CAR). Not to mention some of the Central Scouting Bureaus top 5 rated played for the upcoming NHL entry draft in USA forward Phil Kessell out of the University of Minnesota, Czech Republic F and ISS #1 Mchael Frolik of Kladno, and Canadian C Bryan Little of the Barrie Colts in the OHL.

With so much star power, scouts and NHL GM's alike were en mass watching the festivities.

In Group A group play, the United States and Russia both went 3-0-1, including a 1-1 tie vs one another in what easily the best game of the opening round. Robbie Schremp (EDM) lead the way in the opening round for America with 2 goals and 4 assists in what was a well rounded American attack. As far as the Russians, Denis Parshin of Moscow C had 3 goals and 4 assists, leading the Russians into the preliminary round. Rounding out Group A were the Czech Republic, who were lead by Michael Frolik's 2 goals and 2 assists. Switzerland and Norway were sent to the relegation round.

In Group B play, it was Canada and then everyone else.

The Canadians went 4-0, scoring 21 goals and only allowing 4 as they steamrolled through their grouping. Wojtek Wolski (COL) lead all scorers in the opening round with 7 goals, and was by far the MVP of the opener.

Advancing with Canada were the Swedes at 2-1-1 and the Slovaks at 1-2-1. Latvia and Finland were left in the cold to join Norway and Swtizerland in the relegation play.

In the Preliminary Round, the US and Canada enjoyed byes, which set up Russia vs Slovakia and Sweden vs the Czech Republic.

Russia was too much for the Slovaks, especially Evgeni Malkin who netted 2 goals and had an assist, ending what the Slovaks would hope to be a dream run. In the other Prelim game Sweden scored 3 times in the last 7 minutes, including the game winner with 8 seconds left. Niklas Olausson lead the charge with assists on the last 3 Swedish goals.

In the semis, everyone was treated to a couple of rematches, as the US battled Russia, and Canada took on Sweden.

The Americans couldn't handle Denis Parshin, who had 1 goal and 2 assists, as he lead Russia to a 4-3 victory over the US. Bobby Ryan has 2 assists but he couldn't do enough to keep the Americans from losing to the run and gun Russians

In the other semi, the tournament power, the Canadians dominated the Swedes 6-2, lead by Bryan Littles goal and assist, and Evan McGraths (DET) 2 goals, setting up the two most exciting teams to meet in the Gold Medal game.

But first came the Bronze Medal game, where the USA took on Sweden. Using four first period goals to their advantage, the US sat on their lead and rode out a 4-0 win. Robbie Schremp was the games 1st star with 2 goals and an assist. He finished the game +4.

The Gold Medal game was nothing short of incredible. Powererd behind a David Bolland hat trick, the Canadiens took a 4-0 lead midway through the second. However 17 year old Aleksander Vasyonov wouldn't let the Canadiens keep their lead as he scored 2 goals and had an assist. The Russians would tie it up with 10 minutes left, and then, in the games biggest moment, Alex Bourett would take Canadas only penalty. Thirty seconds into the power play, Illya Zubov scored on a one timer to give Russia a 5-4 lead which they held onto.

Russia wins the Gold Medal 5-4 over Canada in what was by far the best game of the Tournament.

Because of his outstanding play all tournament long, Denis Parshan of Russia was named Tournament MVP.

1. Best goalie was Corey Schnieder of Boston College for the US team. He went 4-1-1 with a 1.33 GAA and a .943 Save %, as well as an average rating of 7.95.
Julien Ellis started the final for the Canadian team.

2/16/06 Olympic Report

In Group A action, the action started off with the two top teams in Group A as picked by many hockey pundits, as Canada took on the Czech Republic. Ignited by a two goal performance by Jarome Iginla and a solid performance from Marty Broduer in net, the Canadiens bested Tomas Vokoun and the Czechs 4-2.

Canada goals: Iginla (2), Bertuzzi, Lecaviliar
Czech goals: Lang, Straka

Next up was Germany vs Italy. This was supposed to be a route for the Germans who many people thought were the third best team in the A group, ahead of the Fins, but somehow they managed to tie Italy 2-2. German goals: Seidenberg, Goc
Italy goals: Young, De Mattio

In the final game of the day for Group A, the Fins beat Switzerland 5-2, lead by Lasse Pirjeta's two goals. Even though Miikka Kiprusoff didn't have his best game, the Fin's managed to win with relative easy against David Aebischer and the Swiss.

Finland goals: Pirjeta (2), Lethinen, Selanne, Immonen
Swiss goals: Pluss, Perret

In Group B action, the first game was a defensive battle as projected Group B winners Sweden blanked Slovakia 2-0. Peter Forsberg and Henrik Tallinder netted the goals for the Swedes, who got a perfect 10 rating from Olympic Rookie goaltender Henrik Lundvqist.

Sweden goals: Forsberg, Tallinder
Slovak goals: None

In the opening days most lopsided game, the United States rolled over an overmatched Latvia club, 7-1. Scott Gomez and Brian Leetch lead the way offensivley with 2 goals apiece, while Rick DiPietro stopped 18 of 19 shots for the opening day win.

Since you'll likely have a top 10 pick in the 2006 draft, how would you list the drafties right now compared to CSS? Who are some of the darkhorses your scouts have noted? With such a poor (sorry, I couldn't find a better word) season right now, drafting will be pretty important if you want to get the Hurricanes to the top.

Haha yes, thank you Johnny. It was between him, Babcock and Andy Murray but I decided Gretz was best because he has the same ideas I do for running our team.

As far as salary .. 28 million tied up in 20 guys, but some of them are just low level guys I don't plan on bringing back.

We'll sign Johnson and Ladd, so we're looking at 5-6 mil next year for FA. I want to spend about 35-36 million so I have flexibility.

CAROLINA NHL DRAFT REVIEW

1.5 - F Peter Mueller

The #1 player on our big board, Mueller is a power forward who can skate and move the puck. He put up 60 points for Prince George in the WHL as an 18 year old and should put up even better numbers this year in the WHL with another year under his belt.

2.1 - F Phil Kessel

This was the steal of the draft. If Mueller were gone at 5, Kess would've snuck in as our 5th pick, but instead he falls all the way out of the 1st round to us at the beginning of the 2nd. I'm in a bind with Kess. I don't like how he played at the U, and I think a year in Lowell could be better for him but I just don't know how to play that set. Still, he's just 19 years old now and should've been a top 10 pick at worse, if not top 5. He was the ISS #3.

2.12 - F Colton Yellow Horn

A small kid at 5'9", 175, he can flat out skate. Very much in the mold of a Paul Kariya with his speed and potential play making ability, Colton will be with Lethbridge in the WHL for his third year. His last two seasons have been excellent with 84 and 86 points respectivley. This one should be another improvement and then who knows what the future holds.

2.18 - F Michael Grabner

Another WHL kid, this one from Austria, his stock rose when he posted a 75 point season for Spokane. He has excellent hockey sense, but lacks in his own zone. He too is another small guy at 5'11", 175, but once again, he can flat out fly and should fit in well with our run n' gun mentality.

3.1 - F David Desharnais

Another small guy, but stocky, at 5'7", 183, Desharnais was reccommended to me by Gretzky and our Assisstant GM. Desharnais played in the offensive minded QMJHL and had a hell of a year with 60 goals and 75 assists. He'll be able to fit in well with how we want to play.

4.1 - D Ivan Maximkin

Our first defensemen drafted, we decided to go with some size in the 6'4", 190 lbs Ivan Maximkin of Togliatti in the Russian Elite League. He's someone, who if he can bring around his offensive game, could shine in the NHL because he isn't afraid to play physical and is sold in his own end.

4.2 - F Jussi Peltomaa

At 5'11", 185, Peltomaa isn't very fast, but he is tremendous defensivley and isn't afraid to grind it out. We realize we still need to have some guys who can play D and create some havoc, and Peltomaa could develope into a 3rd or 4th line guy who goes out there and creates a mess and still has the ability to capitalize on mistakes.

4.19 - F Ivan Duval

Duval is now on Tri-City in the WHL. Last year he only scored 10 points but he has so much talent that on a new team he can hopefully show his worth. He has all the tools to be a good player, and good size at 6'0", 170 lbs. This was a gamble pick but he was ranked #83 with the ISS still and we had a pick to use a gamble on.

4.27 - D Denis Davydov

Denis Davydov is a 6'0", 180 lbs hard hitting defensemen (19 in hitting) who has some great potential as an enforcer type on the blue line. We don't expect a top 4 defensemen, but a guy who can be a 5th or 6th guy who won't hurt us and add that intimidation to our point.

5.1 - F Brent Aubin

Aubin is a 20 year old who'll play for Lowell this year most likely. He is 5'9", 160, with speed. He plays a gritty, hard working game that might not always show on the stat sheets, but will not go unnoticed in the coaches eyes.

6.1 - F Andrew Colclough

At 6'3", 205, Colclough is a power forward about to enter his Sophmore season at Boston College. His freshman year he netted 10 goals and 15 assists, and this year we expect more of the same. Colclough will provide a big body in front.

7.1 - F Jay Lingo

At 6'0", 171, Lingo is about to enter his Sophmore season at Yale. Lingo is simply put, an offensive machine. He has amazing hands, good speed and a great ability to deke. At 19 he will only get better and in my opinion is my biggest coup because I truly feel he can be a gamer for me.

lol you're telling me.

The fact I also added Yellow Horn, a guy I thought was a 1st round talent is another big pick. Hopefully these guys all develope.

Beljo looks solid but went undrafted somehow. I am really surpised.

Vasyunov went in the 3rd round to the Flyers and he took looks damn solid. Could be a steal for the Flyers.

2. Michael Biega (St. Johns)
3. Kale Perry (Baie-Comeau)

WHL

1. Riley Martini (Regina)
2. Brett Mitchell (Swift Current)
3. Duncan Duguay (Prince George)

OHL

Dick Tarnstrom?

He's actually rated fairly high and is the best defensemen on my team (Not saying much) right now.

I think if anything else, Lowell will be good.

Have you thought of leaving Kessel in Minnesota for one more year to see if he plays better? Might be better off there than in the AHL as a 19 year old.

15. Carolina Hurricanes (19-55-8) - 46 points (Worst in the NHL, ha)

Hmm...Carolina's real life record as of November 16: 13-3-1 (27 pts). I think the computer game's going to be a little off. :D

Edit to add: To match the game, Carolina just has to go 6-52-7 over the remaining 65 games. (Has any team ever done so poorly over so long a stretch?)

You know I gave it a thought but it seems like in my past with NCAA guys, whenever I lead them there they bust on me. Maybe it's just because its guys I covet high and they bomb but according to my team page Kessel is my 3rd best RW as is. I signed him so we're stuck with him but there's a legitimate shot he'd make the big club right now.

We'll take more lumps this year but if we can ride it out we'll be set for the year after.

You've got better willpower than I would have. I would have been trying to package some picks together to move back into the first round after Kessel went past the 15th or so pick. Likely would have moved up to at least the 22nd or so spot to grab him if he fell that far.

Would you have been a bit ticked for not having traded up had he gone a pick or two before your next draft slot?

Actually I did try to trade up to 10, 15 and 20, lol.

I didn't want to deal with another future first though so I just got really, really lucky.
