View Full Version : Explanation for the Migration Problems

Hey there,
I was the person migrating the forums to the new server yesterday. I realise there were several problems that the site managers had to look into, and I apologise for not handling these myself. There is a very valid reason!
Just after the 1.3GB database finished moving to the new server, there was a big problem with my ADSL connection at my ISP's end. I was locked out for several hours and ultimately had to go to sleep (early hours of the morning). I tried to connect by my "emergency modem line", but that also failed.
If there are any serious problems with the board, please let me know and I will do my best to ensure they are fixed. I also urge the site managers to contact me to discuss any issues.
Also, I saw a topic regarding the ads. GameSpy provides hosting for free, and if we don't serve ads on hosted sites then we will simply not be able to support free hosting financially. As I mentioned before, this is 1.3GB+ database, and the forums are incredibly active. Please understand the need for these ads.
Anyway, please don't let this thread derail into a discussion about ads -- please don't post unless you have a serious problem to report that wasn't around before the migration.
Thank you.

Thanks.
Hopefully you won't be needing to serve those ads for long. (and yes.. that does mean what you think it means)

Please don't discuss ads in this thread. The decisions about ads are not up to me. Right now I want to make sure every bug caused by the migration is confronted and fixed.

I know that we have been re-experiencing the "timestamp bug" after the migration. Has this been resolved?

I'm pretty sure that was Ryan's top priority, wade. But I have seen it at least once this morning...

Not as of 6 minutes ago (11:40 Eastern). Happened with my being able to insert a post inbetween two of Dubb's in the werwolf thread.

I'll get onto IT about the timestamp problem. It probably has something to do with one of the servers being out of sync (we're on a load balancer).

By the way is anybody seeing any "Page cannot be displayed errors"? Or any screwed up JavaScript /<SCRIPT> tags?

Yes, I'm seeing it from time to time.

No, that was my fault. I put an example script tag in my post and assumed it would be parsed.

I'm having an issue as an Admin. The "Thread Tools" and "Forum Tools" are not working for me currently. Nothing happens when I click on them.

Are you talking about the little pull down ones when you are viewing a post? That probably isn't a gamespy thing, that's something with Java, it breaks sometimes. You might need to delete your cookies and refresh, and restart your browser. I have that happen to me on my message board (vB) as well, from time to time.

No there definitely is an issue on our end -- I'm composing an e-mail to a techie right now.

same for me and whenever I click the arrow next to a thread, the one that should take me to the last post in the thread, I get a "page unavailable" message, then I hit F5 and it loads just fine... Weird...

OK is anyone still seeing "Page cannot be displayed" errors? I understand there are still some malformed script tags appearing but this is being worked on.

just did it when I click the button to reply/quote to your post. It also does it about once every two times I click an arrow to go to the last post in a thread. I can hit F5 in either instances and it reloads the page without a problem.

for your information, it did it as I clicked the "submit reply" button and it showed this address at the top of the page...
hxxp://wrapper.gamespy.com/s?from=http%3A%2F%2Ffof.sportplanet.gamespy.com%2Fforums%2Fshowthread.php%3Fp%3D967504%23post967504&siteId=6205&size=interstitial&ctky=28955864-15818529781132772027892&docTitle=Front%20Office%20Football%20Central%20-%20Explanation%20for%20the%20Migration%20Problems
Well, without the hxxp, of course. I just wanted to show the whole address...
I hit F5 and my post showed up no problem, after I clicked the "skip ad" button because that long address sent me to an ad page...

OK this error has been resolved, and the timestamp issue has been reported - it should be a simple fix. Any other problems?

Yeah, anytime I exit a thread it still shows as unread even though no new posts have been made to it.

Happend in this thread (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?p=975291) (look at posts 9 & 10) and has also been happening to me in the let sleeping SkyDogs lie thread, although no posts are as obvious with the bug.
