I finally got some good news at work.. as of 12/1 I am no longer a contractor/System Support Technician at EMC...

I've been hired by EMC as a full time employee/System Support Engineer.

The move is good for me, I get a significant raise (not going in to the specific amount of the raise or the salary), and almost as important, I get benefits.

Right now I'm in extensive training for the next six months. As well as still performing my original role till I can get someone trained up for it, I need to get a significant amount of training for my new position.

So for the next three months or so, I am going to be doing roughly 60 hours+ per week.. so effectively, all things outside of work and the basics at home are in abeyance.

Will update my dynasties etcetera when I can, just don't expect me to be Jeeberlike in my post count ;)

I work on the Clariion boxes, the lower level units (not the big petabyte Symmetrix units..)

Thanks, it's appreciated. I actually got the mail with the official job offer the day I went to the Doctor's office.. the rest was taking the drug test, getting all the ducks in a row, making sure the company I was a contractor for had no issues (they didn't)

Thats cool. I work on the Tagmastore Product line right now. We just introduced a new midrange unit though, and I will probably move to that next year.

This might be good fortune that I remembered this thread. I have a Clariion system at work that is giving me configuration fits. Anybody up to speed on the Navisphere software that might be able to help me through a problem?

what's going on, Dutch?

Okay, this may be hard to follow since I have a hard time explaining this, but I'll give it a shot.

I'm trying to reconfigure some of my HD's on the SAN. I have 30 drives available. My plan is to split them up into 2 14 disk arrays (with 2 hot spares) in a RAID 5 configuration for both arrays. On the first 14 disk array I attempted, the Navisphere showed that it completed the transition, but the hard drive lights were pinging non-stop for a couple of days. That didn't seem right, so I aborted the process.

My next plan was to go with four 7-disk RAID 5 arrays. The first two arrays were built successfully. But the last two are not working out the same way.

Basically, I removed all the old LUNS that were showing up in the Navisphere (so I could start from scratch) and Destroyed the old RAID groups. (We didn't like the way the thing was pre-configured).

I then created a new LUN for the first 7 drives of the top array and created a RAID 5 array. The transition went well (it ran overnight) and I added it to the storage group. Once the configuraiton in the Navisphere software was done, I went to it's server's (running MS Server 2003) disk configuration manager and initialized the disk as Microsoft recognized it.

That worked fine. I moved all pre-existing data onto the newly created arrays and went to work on the next set of disks.

I did those steps for the next array and it worked fine in the Navisphere but for the last two, MS Server 2003 can't configure the newly built disks, but it does see them once the navisphere transition is complete.

It's been about a month since I did the first two arrays successfully, so I'm assuming I'm forgetting a step that magically made the first two arrays show up properly in Windows.

Anyway, words alone probably don't do this justice. But that's where I'm at in a nutshell. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them, you can PM if you don't want to bore the board so much. :D And thanks for any and all help.

Ok.

You created the LUNs,and put them in a storage group once they were created, and presented the Storage Group to the host, correct?

Ok.

I'm pretty sure that when I add it to the Storage Group, it just "appears" on the Server as a new disk volume that is ready to be configured. At least that's what I remember happening the first two times. The last two times, it "appears" in the Win2k3 disk configuration utility, but just in an unconfigurable state.

yeah, read the time stamps on the early posts, Astros, they're from several months ago. Dutch just thread-necromancied it when he needed Clariion help

BTW, Dutch, why don't we take it to AIM? If you have it, my work AIM is YellopeDx70297

Just to follow up in case anybody was still curious (Uh, I guess that means Sir Fozzie and Flere?)

I finally had success. It wasn't a problem with the Clariion or my configurations (as I had suspected). It was a Windows Server 2k3 issue. Today, out of frustration, I finally just sat down and started a click-fest and found that after creating the new LUNs and adding them to the storage container, 4 "new" hard drives would appear in the Device Manager. Why it's four and not 2 (new arrays) is beyond me and why I didn't notice these things with the first array I built is a mystery as well. But anyway, enabling these bad boys and restarting the server brought the new arrays out of their "unreadable" state and made them ready to be initialized.

So, finally, success. And on a Friday, gotta love that! :D
