So my wife and I are looking at getting "each other" a Nikon D50 SLR for Christmas. We're finding that it's basically the same deal/price set at Best Buy and Circuit City (even with extended warranty-type-things, which we like, because I am clumsy). Anyone have this particular camera and want to comment on our choice? Also, anyone know of any better deals on it either at BB, CC, or other stores.
We're looking at a price of about $800 for the kit (camera + lens), then another ~$100 for a 4-year extended, and $100ish for a gig SD card.
W00t, christmas. :-D

Have you considered Ebay? Not everything on there is used. Antmeister got me a Canon EOS 10D with 3 lenses, tripod, filters, and all kinds of other stuff. Everything was brand new and it was around $1,000. Not too bad considering that's how much the camera would of costed at Best Buy *body only*

My wife and I are looking for a new digital camera for Christmas as well. But we could never afford/justify $1000 on a camera. Although I'd love to have one like that! That looks fantastic. But until we can afford/justify that, we are looking for a good quality digital camera for around $300.

Excellent choice of camera, just maybe look around the 'net for a deal on the cards, I've seen them for a lot less than $100 each.

We thought about that a bit - there are a couple good deals on there for this particular camera - but the anything-goes-wrong-we-fix-it additional service plan is a big selling point for us.

We had Canon Powershot A90 that we were very happy with until some idiot left it behind somewhere. Not sure who that could be. :-/

Okay, I found the receipt for our camera. The name of the vendor is Digital Corp (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=unknown&sbrftog=1&frpp=25&from=R10&satitle=Nikon+D50&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&bs=Search&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=&sadis=200&fpos=85022&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&seller=1&sass=digitalcorp) . It was a very smooth transaction, and we got our kick ass camera in no time! As you will see, they're a power seller with over 12,000 feedback.

You ever hear the bit about sunglasses? I think it was foxworthy, or engvall. He says "You ever notice how you buy a nice pair of sunglasses and always lose them, but you can never seem to lose that pair of cheap ones? You could be leaning over a rail on a cruise ship, and you glasses fall into the ocean. Next thing you know, a diver surfaces and shouts out, hey! somone lose a pair of cheapees? Anyone?"

You might also check Costco or Sam's. They both offer this camera, and also have some bundles with different lenses. I'm almost certain they will have a lower price than Best Buy or Circuit City.

I have a D70, and love it. I don't know all the differences between the D50 and D70, but I'm guessing most are not all that important for a leisurely amateur. I bought my D70 from buydig.com a year ago, and have since bought another lens and a camera backpack from B&H photo. Both transactions went very well.
For memory cards, go with Lexar or SanDisk.
