OUT OF THE NAVY!

Should I bother to reenlist within the next year, I'd likely get a reenlistment bonus of less than twenty thousand dollars over six years. To compare that to the first time I reenlisted, I received just over forty thousand dollars for six years. The cash incentive is obviously not there for me.

Should I reenlist, I'd also be going to sea duty again, most likely three years as an E-5/E-6. That's another negative. I did 4.5 years of sea duty (not counting some limited duty sandwiched in there), and it was taxing on my marriage and life in general.

Moving back to Norfolk or San Diego doesn't exactly entice me either. I didn't enjoy my stay in Norfolk. I did enjoy my stay in San Diego, but moving back to California is not something my wife wants to do. I can understand that to an extent.

In fact, my wife really doesn't want to move at all. She'd prefer it if I found a job in the St. Louis area. I don't know how feasible that is, honestly. I guess I need to begin looking.

I already have one strong possibility in Michigan with my old boss. He's told me to put in an application in about a month from now, and that he's sure he can get me in. My wife's not too enthusiastic about that since it's "not Missouri". The job is pays well, but there is a decent amount of travel involved.

I could possibly get a job out in Maryland working with the equipment the Navy trained me for. That's even worse, according to my wife. So, I'm stuck.

I'm not sold on getting a good job in the St. Louis (maybe Kansas City) area. I don't know why. I'm just not.

The ideal situation for me would be getting a good job in the electronic field that would allow me to coach some sort of youth football as well. Travelling would negate the football part for certain.

I've looked at a couple of programs the military offers. Troops to Teachers, Troops to Troopers. Neither seems to be exactly what I want. Being a teacher would let me coach, but how much income would I receive? Being a state trooper is a little interesting, though I haven't put much thought into it.

I've also considered switching my military service to the Air Force. I've contacted the two AF personnel I know here about that. It's tempting. I'm leaning towards doing that. You have a lot of time to think about this, but I would advise you to go in one of these directions: Either pursue at least a Master's Degree, or else start your own business.

I believe those are the only two routes to genuine success, freedom, and happiness in this world.

AE, I can tell that you've put a lot of thought into making this decision. I'm sure that you'll make the right decision when it's time. Just keep in mind that you may begin to waiver when it gets closer to the actual seperation date. If you truly believe that leaving the Navy is best for you and your family, then you should seek those other opportunities. Plus, there will be others that will come up as you get closer as well.

I struggled making that same choice, but I think it worked out for the best. It will for you too.

I went through the exact same thought process. As I told AE, as long as you put in a good amount of time thinking things through, you won't make a wrong decision no matter what you do at the 10-year mark.

I work as a contractor on the base and I am constantly baffled by those who make it to 10 years and then stop. Now granted, I have never been in those shoes, but the benefit to having that retirement and already being 1/2 way there seems to enticing to me...

AE, stay in the service for your 20. My dad did it, and is thankful to have that extra check every month. My uncle, a Captain (might have been Major, can't pin that down) in the Air Force after about 13 years, chose the early out they offered him, and has regretted it ever since.

There are several states that will actualy pay 100% of your college tuition if you join the guard. Of course, these days, there's probably not a lot of difference between active duty and the reserves.

Seriously consider the Reserve when you get out, the sooner the better. My brother was in the Navy for 10yrs, been out for about 2 now I think, and when he wanted to go Reserve for the retirement benefits all they've done is jerk him around, telling him ok and then just leaving him hanging.

BTW, anybody reading this and considering the military, save yourself alot of grief right off the bat and just go in Air Force. Wish I had, as well as many others. Air Force has it all over the other guys. Marines might be the exception as they get a special type to begin with. Just looking for a different thing when they join, I mean.

In my job I am active with dealing with the public safety teams and riding along with them to see there jobs. One thing I have learned is that if you were to be a trooper in a rural part of a state that you'll be dealing with the same people 85 percent of the time. Most of those people have domestic abuse problems. So basically you would be a full time counslor is what I have declared my police in my city.

But from my experience with public safety I have learned that many of them have military backgrounds. The number one reason for this is because of the paramilitary style that public safety departments are set up as. The comradery that troopers or deputies have with each other is comparable to what you get in the military. I don't know how big comradery is in the Navy, but I hear its pretty big in the Marines and Army.

I could tell you much more about a daily shift for a public safety official in a rural area if you ever have any questions. Those are just a few things I thought you might need to know.

Here I am now at 460 days.

I've spoken to one of the career counselor's here at the base about my intention to separate. Interesting enough, she's not my designated counselor.

I've filled out my request to extend my transfer date to meet my separation date. Just a few headaches along the way, but it went through.

Friday I have a "Career Development Board," with a not too happy master chief. He saw me today and gave me a bit of a hard time about even having to do the board. Great. When I got to work today, I had a questionnaire to fill out so that the board can have some information on me.

Some of the questions are a joke. Are you satisfied with your job? Are you interested in any Navy schools? Are you interested in special, officer, and incentive programs? Why are you separating? If you separated tomorrow, what would you say about the Navy (be honest)? I really liked the (be honest) part. They won't like my answer.

Another class down the drain. Labor and Employment Law. I'm currently taking Technical Communication and Intro to Electronic Systems Technology Research. The APA portion of ESTR is kicking my butt.

I wasn't rude or negative about the Navy. If I were single, I'd stay in. No doubt about it. However, the strain on my marriage from being in is too much.

I think this really boils down to the Navy's health care screwing the pooch for me. I've heard a number of people tell me how Tricare, the Navy's health care company/sytem/whatever, has helped them. Tricare has done nothing, the Navy has done nothing in regards to my wife's illness/eating disorder.

My wife was accussed in San Diego of just trying to get me home from sea by one Navy doctor. She's been told by another that she was pregnant (and he was incorrect, I might add).

I could go on and on. In fact I did, but I just deleted two paragraphs of it. Honestly, I'm certain I'd be staying in if Tricare didn't have their head up their, well, you know.

I've been nothing but disappointed over the past 8 years. For such a big stickler, it's a huge disappointment.

That Go Navy class will definitely pinpoint the family health care as a "benefit", and include it the pro-military package. I'm definitely going to waylay that instructor.

He is (or was, he retired for good a few months ago) a damn fine doc and I hate it when people rip on military docs. I went to military hospitals for most of my young life and got nothing but great treatment there.

Of course, my dad got fed up with Kaiser a long time ago. They kept telling him to cut his appointments shorter and shorter so that he could squeeze more patients into the workday. All my dad wanted to do was give quality medical service to his patients, and it was hard for him to do that under Kaiser's demands. So maybe me calling you an asswipe was a bit harsh, Franky. ;)

If you had to choose between these two, I would go with the Master's. Having your own business is/can be more of a headache than it is worth... I had my own business for 3 1/2 years. BEFORE you go that route, gather more advice as to what is really involved (BWC, taxes, incorporating, etc...)- having your own business and being your own boss isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I figured there was somebody here who would be offended. As I understand it, there was a time when military medicine was cutting edge, and a military doctor was somebody you would actually want to go to. Not anymore; they just absolutely CAN'T recruit decent health care professionals, and the ones the do land end up leaving as soon as possible. This applies not just to the care providers, but to the managers as well, so the whole system is just completely fucked right now. It is better to be sick, poor and uninsured in America than to be sick and in the military.

I have no doubt Jeeber's dad is a fine doc. I'll tell you that the military is notoriously unpleasant with psychiatrists. I strongly considered the military to pay for medical school back when I thought I was going to be a pediatrician. Once I decided I preferred to be a child psychiatrists in my 3rd year of medical school, I was really glad I had not gone the military route in my 1st year of medical school. Bottom line, the military is not a pleasant place for mental health care, and I imagine it might be difficult to get your wife the best care through that system as an eating disorder really should be treated by a psychiatrist leading a multi-disciplinary team of mental health care providers.

Update.

Nearly a year later, and I'm on day 122.

I'm excited. I really am.

Obviously, in the past year I spent 7 months away from my wife and most of it in Africa. That got rid of what debt we had and helped put a little bit of money in the bank.

It also interrupted my college courses, so my SIU coursework is kind of wrecked right now. Courses in the field (or however you wish to put it) being offered now I took two years ago. I'd have to wait a year to get to the ones I need. I did make the Dean's List again before I left.

I considered trying to take online courses while I was out there, but the unreliable nature of that internet, coupled with our "missions" and lack of computers, I didn't see it being possible. In fact, no one I worked with out there was able to.

I considered my options in the Navy while I was out there. Had I re-enlisted, it would have been tax free. That would have pushed it to about 22 thousand for 6 years, which just wasn't worth it to me.

I looked at the possibility of being something other than an electronics technician. Unfortunately, I have what the Navy views as a critical skill in my field, so I'm not allowed to change fields. While other ETs can and have, I'm stuck because I'm critical. They'd rather lose me entirely, it doesn't make sense.

Working with the Air Force (even having one of their E3s and an E5 work for me at one point), I realize they're branch has it's headaches as well. Probably a lot less headaches, but headaches nonetheless. Sorry Dutch. :)

During that last month or so that I was in NE Kenya with the Bees drilling water wells, I had the best time I've ever had in the Navy. It was definitely the most rewarding thing I've done in the Navy, perhaps in my life. It was a lot like church mission work, except it was more of a "hey we're good guys who built this water well for you, don't hate america" work.

I was the bees radioman, computer guru, electronic expert. Radio Shack, PRC-nineteen, Prick One Nineteen, Help Desk, Fleeter...all names I answered to out there. I was able to do a number of different things, including help drill, while I was out there and it was definitely great.

Honestly, I worry for them, and it does deal with what I know about the area where we were, and what's going on in nearby Somalia. They leave that area next month.

Their mission commander loved that I wanted to work, doing all the extra stuff that I did, volunteering to do everything that I did. I could have got away with just saying I was their radioman and that's it. They've had those guys there before, the bees don't complain (well, not about that, anyways), cause their the Bees. Those guys and girls work. Wow, do they work.

He sung my praises before I left, asking me to consider re-enlisting and joining them full time as their ET. He essentially was guaranteeing a promotion to E6 once I joined them, and I know once I make E6 it's merely a time in rate until I make E7 (based off my professional history versus those with similar backgrounds making E7 immediately).

That was more tempting than the money, honestly. Still, I thought about it. The Bees deploy a heck of a lot more than regular Navy and I didn't want to put my wife through that again. Heck, I didn't want to put myself through that again.

He actually contacted my home command and told them what a great job I did out there. How cool was that?

Meanwhile, I have been in contact with a military hiring agency that my former boss put me in touch with. He had high praise for them, and knowing about his job in Michigan, I figured I'd give them a try.

They had me fill out a survey, job history, resume, stuff like that, and basically shelved me until I got back to the states.

So I got back to the States last month and I'm as happy as I could be right now.

My family life is nothing short than outstanding. My wife is kicking her disorder's butt up and down, my dog loves me, and my cat hasn't bit me yet (though he has tried).

Even my old HS football coach has hinted I could be coaching with him this year.

My old boss called to welcome me home and told me he had a contact for someone in Missouri looking for military electronic types, and that has us extremely excited. Problem is, it's a lot of travel, but not near as much as the Navy! Plus, there's no Africa in this job. :) It pays better than we have been expecting for this area as well. I'd be home at least 10 days a month, which is a lot more than I'm averaging now, and a lot more than I've averaged in probably the past 6 years. I darn near accepted it outright.

What stopped me is that the hiring agency is kicking in now that I'm back. I'll have some interviews in the next few months as well as a job conference the 18th and 19th of next month.

Basically, long long post made short, I'm incredibly stoked to be at my 122 days mark. I'm more excited about getting out of the Navy now than I have ever been in my life, and it has nothing to do with dislike of the Navy. It has everything to do with how excited I am about my future.

I just wanted to share this with all of you, seeing as you're my extended family and you've seen me through good and bad.

My expected departure date is May 12th. My 31st birthday is 6 days later.

Update.

Basically, long long post made short, I'm incredibly stoked to be at my 122 days mark. I'm more excited about getting out of the Navy now than I have ever been in my life, and it has nothing to do with dislike of the Navy. It has everything to do with how excited I am about my future.

I just wanted to share this with all of you, seeing as you're my extended family and you've seen me through good and bad.

Party at my place, drinks are on me.
Update: Life is grand. My request to separate on the 30th is to be signed off on Monday. My separation package is nearly complete. I receive my command check out sheet on Monday. I start my new job the following Monday.

I'm not sure I could be happier. Party at my place and the drinks are on me.

This thread makes me think that it'd be kinda cool to have a thread in which we post pictures of our favorite players, ordered by uniform number. I guess I mean something like we could have #1 (or #0, I guess) on one day, and then move to #2 the next day, or something like that. The problem might come in when you get up to the 50s or 60s, though, when you come upon players who probably don't have that many pictures of them.

I'm having fun in this thread, though. I have no idea who I would choose for #2, but I'll come up with something in a couple of days. :D
