Reading the IGN review (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/647/647465p1.html), I picked it up this game the other day and I'm having a blast with the career mode (Fight To The Top). I don't know anything about the Nascar world, but this is fun, a lot of fun.
Basically, in this mode you start in the lowest of the Nascar series (Whelen) and try to work your way to the top. You earn money, you have fans/prestige, and you can even buy a team. I don't use the "Total Team Control" thing a lot but the races are fun to play. Right now, I play with the short version races (10-12 laps range).
Anybody playing this?

DOLA
Damn, this thing is tight!!! I finished 3rd overall (with 6 wins) in the Whelan championship, and mid-season I got an offer from a team to race in the Craftman series (trucks). I recorded several pole positions and 2 wins there, but I didn't get the renewal at the end of the season.
But now the fun starts: at the end of the season I had enough money to buy my own team! I bought the crappiest team in the Whelan (lowest) series, and now I can choose drivers, colors, numbers, design, sponsor. Very cool. I also accepted an offer from a team in the Craftman series, so I can get a little extra money.

Are you playing on PS2? I have a question for you, what controller are you using when you race these console racing games? I have played a few racing games in the past on Xbox and PS2, but it is just so damned awkward using the regular controllers, especially to steer the cars. Is there a decent hand held steering controller for either of these consoles?

Damn, I just noticed this! I haven't visited the PC/Console board for a long a time. I'm veeery late, sorry man.
Anyway, I played Nascar on the Xbox, with the regular Microsoft controller. To tell you the truth, I've always found myself pretty comfortable in racing games with the console controller. The only time I tried a steering wheel was with the PC, 5 or 6 years ago when Grand Prix 4 (F1 game) came out. I bought the "super-cool" Logitech steering-wheel, last model, force feedback, pedals and everything. It was fun at first, but I got tired pretty quickly. I really don't know why. Maybe it was the fact that everytime I had to play with it, I had to move the keyboard, put the pedals to the floor... I sold it after some months, getting back to a regular, simple gamepad.
Now I don't know a lot about steering wheels, but I know Logitech makes great products. If you want to try one, get a Logitech. I checked, they got 2 models for the PS2. I don't about the price, though, but I don't think they're very cheap.
NASCAR 07 has been just released and it looks nice.
