View Full Version : NBA 2k6 on 360

Based on all the praise here, I'm thinking about grabbing NBA 2k6 for my 360. I have two questions first though:
1) How long does it take to play out a game and get reasonable stats? I add the latter because, for example, I can play Madden with 5 minute quarters in 30 minutes or so, but my guys won't show up on league stat leaderboards.
2) Can I save mid-game (especially if the games take longer to play out)? This was one of my disappointments with Madden 360: you can save mid-game in all other Madden versions, but not in Madden 360, which forces me to use 5 minute quarters (and is a key reason I'm not playing so much anymore).

1) It takes me about 45 minutes (give or take a few minutes either way depending upon how many penalties there are.)
2) I don't believe there are in game saves, which limits when I play it as well.

Thanks. Sounds like something I might go ahead and pick up then, as I can probably handle a game every couple of nights if it is 45 minutes.

I play 8 minute quarters and it usually takes me 45-50 minutes. It's not bad at all.

I play 12 minute quarters, and I think takes me 65-75 minutes. It does take a while, so I don't play that often, but I love it anyway. :D

I have two parallel careers going, and in my "serious career" with the Sixers, I also play 12 minute quarters. It really gives great stats :)

Any of you ever get a lock when playing NBA 2k6? I do occasionaly and it tells me that the disk may be dirty. I pull the disk out and it is completely clean. I love the game and most of the other 360 games, but the lockup thing is annoying.

I've had that happen once with Madden, but never with NBA 2k6 despite playing NBA FAR more often.

Never on NBA, but I get them probably about 40% of the time on Madden.

My "favorite" Madden "lockup" (the machine didn't really freeze, just shut out my input) was a tough game with my Pats vs. the Chargers in my career where I was eeking out a tight victory thanks to some key intereception returns. I score late, kick the extra point, and it brings up the "Player of the Game" dialog. No amount of button pressing would get rid of that freakin' dialog and let the game continue. Finally had to reboot.
Something about that dialog coming up while transitioning from extra point to kickoff caused it to forget what input mode it was in. Bah!
I lost that game on the restart...

NBA 2K6 made me smile in my first game.
After I made a couple trades with my Celtics (largely to bring in Caron Butler, but also to upgrade my PF and C positions, so that and Butler meant bye-bye Ricky Davis and Paul Pierce), I started my first preseason game.
Dwight Gooden was picked in the pregame show to be the man for the C's. He didn't do jack the first half because Gilbert Arenas was tearing it up for me but then he went bananas in the second half and torched the Knicks, which I enjoyed.
But what really made me smile?
We were playing the Knicks and Starbury got five fouls... in the first half.
The most beautiful touch? Late in the second half, Starbury got the ball on a fast break and was going up for an easy lay-in and Dan Dickau was in his way... The AI-controlled Dickau dove to the floor to try and get Starbury foul #6. :D
It wasn't called, but man, beautiful to see.
Starbury did eventually foul out in the mid 4th quarter (7 minute quarters) and we won 111-105. :)
I may restart and try something with a little shorter sim quarters so as to be able to play shorter quarter games, too, but we'll see.
The game also gives me inspiration to fire up NCAA 2K6 again and start porting classes in.
I know it's early yet, but right now my impressions are that NBA 2K6 is the best sports game on the 360 and may well be one of the best console sports games of all time.
(This won't affect my Top 32 Games Dynasty though, because that's already written in list form. Five years later may be a different story. :D)

Dwight Gooden? Dr K must have a new career going on or something :)

:D I should add that Quentin "Pooh" Richardson also hosed me for 20+ points. It felt like I was playing TPB with the Gabriel Arcadia Timberwolves in that regard.

Not necessarily. I consider this essentially a free pickup because I traded Madden in for it and a couple other games and this way I have import class capability with NCAA 2K6, which is a big deal for me.
Now if NBA 2K7 also imports NCAA 2K6, then I might see that. :)

Wasn't he always Pooh?

...Oh. I guess not. For some reason I thought the Pooh Richardson who played for the T-Wolves back in the 90s was originally named Quentin, too.

Nah, Pooh's real name is Jerome, I think. Anyway, no big deal. Just poking a little fun while I get the chance. :)

I've also said it before...NBA 2k6 is the best basketball game ever. I played 1.6 seasons on the XBox and maybe .6 of a season on the 360. It was only a slight upgrade IMO on the 360, but I kept playing it.
NBA 2k7 is high on my watch list. If it doesn't have any gamebreaking problems and they slightly improve a couple of things, it should be a must buy for any basketball fan. BTW, I love college and I don't really like the NBA but I definitely prefer NBA over College Hoops cuz to me it's a better product.

A newer version does not necessarily mean a better game. (see FPS FB 99, NHL 2006, NCAA 07, Madden 07, OOTP 2006, and the list goes on)

Very true. However, every preview of NBA 2k7 I've read gives me hope that it will be a great game. The signature styles and moves on the 360 sound very slick, and they are reportedly fixing the interior defense which was my biggest gripe with 06.

I was just making a point. I'm not much into the NBA so I haven't read anything about the new version. :)

Did this version have Jordan and Barkley as historic players, and if so, could you put them on teams for a dynasty. I'm a sucker for historic players, and don't care much about current players. I can't make decent CAPs of them in 2k7, so I may switch to 2k6 if I can have Barkley and Jordan in the league.

I don't remember if it had Barkley, but I'm fairly certain it had Jordan. Either that or someone had a great CAP for Jordan in 2k6. Then again, I'm pretty sure in the appropriate forum on OS there is a very good CAP for Jordan in the 2k7 game.
