Righting a Wrong: 1982 Orioles Replay

Growing up in the Baltimore suburbs, I became an Orioles fan shortly after my birth in 1969. My family had lived in Maryland since WW2, and my Dad would tell me stories about Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Brooks Robinson, Boog Powell, etc. I would soon have my own heroes - guys like Bert Jones, Roger Carr, Eddie Murray, Lee May and even guys like Andres Mora. As a child, I had no idea how lucky I was being able to cheer for the Colts (who soon became quite miserable) and the Orioles (who were still in the midst of playing ball "The Oriole Way).

In 1982, at the age of 13, the O's "suffered" through an odd year. The pitching wasn't as dominating as it had been in the past and the team's record suffered. As with all Earl Weaver teams, however, the O's really turned it on when September rolled around. I still have an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer (we had moved to Pennsylvania in 1981) stating (and I paraphrase), "When September rolls around, one can be assured that Nebraska will win their first 2 games by a combined score of 126 to 6, and the Orioles will go about 25-5." The Orioles wouldn't do quite as well in September of '82 (they managed only a 22-10 record after Aug. 31st), but the end of the season pennant race was probably my most memorable.

At the end of the season, the O's found themselves 3-games behind the Milwaukee Brewers with 4 games left to play. As luck would have it, they would be facing the Brewers at home the final weekend. Friday would be a make-up doubleheader (remember those?), followed by a game on Saturday and Sunday. Thus, the Orioles would have to sweep all 4 games in order to head into the ALCS against the Angels. The O's swept the doubleheader 8-3 and 7-1 (I listened to both games on WFBR 1300 - and the reception was HORRIBLE in Pennsylvania). On Saturday, the O's would win again, 11-3. Finally, the last game was broadcast on national TV - Jim Palmer vs. (hired gun) Don Sutton. Robin Yount hit two homeruns (solidifying his MVP season) and the Brewers would romp to a 10-2 victory. I was heartbroken, but only had to wait a year for a World Series championship. I've been waiting ever since - ha!

So...laying the groundwork...I will be replaying the 1982 baseball season using Strat-o-matic V11. I will be playing the role of Earl Weaver, guiding this team to (hopefully) their rightful "place" - 1982 World Series Champions.

Rules:

Using all Strat "MAX Rules" for added realism.
Managing and playing all Baltimore games, use the computer to replay the rest of the AL games as well as the NL.
Using Primary lineups with rest (no "as-played lineups")
Minor leaguers are eligible, so every manager will have access to everyone who played for the respective teams in 1982, no matter when they debuted.
Using injuries - will this have an impact on the races?
The computer will limit overusage of players (as will I)

Mario Soto came through with a solid 7 innings at Riverfront Stadium as the
Cincinnati Reds won a thriller over the Chicago Cubs, 2 to 1.

The deciding run was scored by Cincinnati in the 9th. After an out was
recorded, Ron Oester tripled. Mike Vail was a strikeout victim, unable to
help out. Duane Walker then lined a one-base hit making Cincinnati the
winners and sending the 10,681 fans home happy. Chicago was out-hit by
Cincinnati, 9 hits to 3.

The win was credited to Jim Kern(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Dick Tidrow(0-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and no walks in
1 and 1/3 innings.

I watched the St. Louis - Houston game to catch Nolan Ryan's first outing of the year. He struck out Lonnie Smith to begin the game, but then quickly faltered, losing his control and giving up the longball. He gave up 5 runs through the first 3 innings, but then quickly settled down, retiring his last 11 batters before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the 7th. Still, it wasn't enough as the Cardinals start the season 2-0 with a 6-3 victory.

on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Terry Kennedy who
excited the crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners. San Diego out-hit
Atlanta for the game, 9 hits to 5.

The winning pitcher was John Montefusco(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings. Montefusco got help from Dravecky who earned his 1st save. Rick
Mahler(0-1) ended up with the loss.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Dick Williams said after the game. 'Montefusco did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'

provided by Randy Johnson. He doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 3rd
inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 1st of the season) in
the 4th inning. Minnesota had 13 hits for the game and Seattle had 10.

Al Williams(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 5
runs. Terry Felton earned his 1st save. Gaylord Perry(0-1) was hit with the
loss. He was unable to control the Minnesota offense and allowed 8 hits and

IIRC, there was sizeable dump of snow on opening day in both New York and Boston, 6+ inches. The weather did not improve much and I think the Yankkes had to wait until the first Sunday to open their home season with a doubleheader.

I'm replaying 1982 currently using the freeware gem Strategic Baseball Simulator, almost into June with a 5 way razor thin race in the AL East. Incredible baseball.

Steve Carlton reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts at Veterans Stadium as the
Philadelphia Phillies came back dramatically to top the New York Mets by the
score of 5 to 4.

Philadelphia scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Pete Rose led off and started the rally when he
banged out a single. Gary Matthews next to the plate and he doubled. Neil
Allen then let a pitch get away from him plating a run. Mike Schmidt was the
next batter, but he struck out. Bo Diaz stepped into the box and laced a
base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Philadelphia and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans. Philadelphia had 11 hits for the
afternoon while New York had 8.

The winning pitcher was Sid Monge(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Allen(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,'
Diaz said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole
way.'
