View Full Version : Do you "visualize" FOFC?

When you read a post or thread, do you visualize the people that are posting? I don't necessarily mean matching up "What the hell do you look like" photos, but rather a persona that you associate with that poster. I do, and sometimes a comment or thread will dramatically change that visualization. Others are deeply ingrained.
As an example, I tend to picture Ardent in a naval uniform for obvious reasons. Ksyrup is the lawyer-baseball-FSU guy, but it's harder to pinpoint a specific mental image. Quik is a cross between Deep Blue and a guy buried under vast piles of spreadsheets, computations, and a blackboard with "2/3" boldy circled on it. Jeebs has an Astros jersey on, with a bottle of Shiner Bock on the desk and a UTEP pennant on the wall.
That kind of thing.
Not really, although I'd say more than half my posts have come while being in my uniform. Not the white uniform most have seen, but the utility uniform.

I have different "voices" that I hear when I read most posts and that is mostly just cadence and possibly accent or the way they might emphasize a certain word the sentence.
Quik, for example is always a deliberate monotone-type voice where he enunciates all his end consontants and is never in a hurry.

I don't own an Astros jersey. Or a UTEP pennant. :(
I am usually wearing my UTEP hat or a UTEP shirt (or both), and you aren't too far off on the Shiner. ;)
I really don't do the visualization thing, myself.

absolutely, and it's funny you bring this up because I was thinking about the same thing last night, especially about the race/color of skin. I'm white and live in a very white community, it's just how it is. When reading here, I kind of assume most posters are white unless I read something that makes me think differently. Nothing against a race or another, please nobody go think I'm racist or anything, it's just like that. Sometimes it makes for some funny/weird realization when I either see a pic of somebody or understand that he/she is who he/she is. Hope this is not too confusing... :)

... I kind of assume most posters are white unless I read something that makes me think differently.
Given that a pretty large majority of the users here are in the U.S. I'd say that's not an unreasonable first guess at to ethnicity.
Consider:
http://www.ntia.doc.gov/reports/anol/NationOnlineBroadband04.htm#_Toc78020933
As of October 2003,
65.7% of the White population used the internet
45.2% of the Black population used the internet
63.0% of the Asian/Pac.Isl. population used the internet
37.2% of the Hispanic population used the internet
Now, take the ethnic breakout of the U.S. (circa Sep. 2004)
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0762156.html
236m white X 65.7% internet use = 155,052,000
38m black X 45.2% internet use = 17,176,000
13m Asian/Pac.Isl X 63.0% internet use = 8,190,000
41m Hispanic X 37.2% internet use = 15,252,000
Total internet universe (U.S.) = 195,670,000
Percentage of (U.S.) internet users that are white = 79.2%
So, if you presume white, you got a roughly 80% chance of being right
(minus adjustment for "geekdom" factor or whatever else draws people to a football text sim forum)

I always picture Ksyrup posting from a laptop on a porch in a rumpled seersucker suit.
I sort of regionalize people when I imagine them unless I've seen pictures.

Sorry, Coug, but I do picture you as the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.
JiMGa = Rush Limbaugh
SkyDog = Hootie
QuikSand = The main English guy from The Avengers
KSyrup = Posts under a lawyer shingle hung outside his house while sitting on the porch sipping lemonade
EaglesFan27 = Posts from a busy ER while gunshot victims are wheeled around him
That's all I've got for now.

rkmsuf: I always imagined him as an outcast smurf who was banished from the smurf community because of what he did to Smurfette.
SkyDog: Unfortunately, I still think about the patriotic undies picture while he is typing on a computer on the front porch.
Quiksand: I imagine that he has an egg for a head (but with no mouth or eyes).
JoninMiddleGA: I imagine he is sitting at a computer with a shotgun laying on his lap, patchwork clothing and a container of uncooked grits in his trash can.
Senator: For whatever reason, I think Howie Long, but I have no good reason why I do.
Noop: Pants dropping below and bandana tied around his head with a picture of his possible girlfriend dangling from a chain on his neck.
AnalBumCover: I hate this image, but it is some guy who wears this stainless underwear with a padlock underneath his pants. Even though I know what the guy looks like, I keep thinking there is a thud whenever he sits down.
RaidersArmy: I have always thought of him as a drill sargeant barking out what he is about to type.
Bad-Example: I imagine him in a long trench coat and he wears his sunglasses at night with 80's hair.

Y'know, it kinda disturbs me that of all the visualizations mentioned for me to this point, yours is actually the closest to what I actually look like. It's waaaay far off reality, but it's still the closest ... and that's a bit unsettling.

For the life of me, I don't recall hearing the guy sing, but based on this description of his voice, I'd have to say no.
a raspy, gravelly singing voice, described by one fan as ‘like how you'd sound if you drank a quart of bourbon, smoked a pack of cigarettes and swallowed a pack of razor blades. . . . Late at night. After not sleeping for three days.’"

I would add "while being tortured" to that description. He has his fans... but damn, his voice sounds like his larynx was removed, crushed, then reinstalled.
