It's cold in the winter. Nice in the summer.
Nothing to do there, really. It's the proverbial quiet mountain town. Locals are nice. When it comes to real estate, you want to probably stick within city limits... last time I looked at real estate there, well and septic was always a problem... lots of folks off the main have to haul water... which sucks.

I tripped over a gas hose at a gas station there once, banged up my knees pretty bad.
That's all I know about Flagstaff.

Even though we've lived in Phoenix for 3 years, we never traveled to Flagstaff.
http://www.bestplaces.net/col/ is a great site. Antmeister and I have moved from San Diego to Phoenix, and now from Phoenix to Austin and we used this to compare stats.
Hope it helps.

Yes it is, but flagstaff will be colder. Its a ski/college town with Northern Arizona being located there. Great if you love nature and all that jazz, but not soo great if you are looking for a metropolis...

My wife graduated from NAU. Absolutely loved it there, and I'm sure it would be #1 on her list of places she'd want to live (I'm just not sure what kind of a job I could get there, though you'd think in the information age...). She says many of the locals are "hippy types" (at least, as of the early 90's when she was there), but very friendly. Also a decent Native American (Navajo, Hopi) population.
We took short vacations there a couple of times before we had kids, and it's quite beautiful (Buffalo Park was very nice). Weather is sunny, but yes, it can get quite cold. Good if you like to ski. Not much humidity, I definitely noticed that and the thin air.
It looked like there was some building going on, at least towards the southwest (?) part of town - a few motels, a movie complex, a few restaurants. Downtown area has a nice older feel to it, and has an assortment of shops, cafes, and bars of course. We mainly ate at places like the Village Inn, The Mad Italian (Mad I's) and Little America (mmm, nice big diner portions at Little America). I'd think you'd be able to buy something there fairly inexpensively, there is certainly enough land, especially a little ways out from town.
edit: Franklin has a good point about water and other amenties though.

locals - all are pretty friendly, it really has that small town feel to me, but I've lived in Phoenix/Chandler/Scottsdale area my entire life. I really hate the one road in/one road out though. Gets bad during things like NAU football games & NAU graduation otherwise not too bad.
weather - pretty much well discussed...I hate the cold so can't stand it, but I'd love to have their weather down here in the summer.
cost of living - can't help you much with this, though I'd think it was a bit cheaper than Phx.
housing prices - again can't help there, but I'm sure many realestate sites can give you a little info.
hope it helps a little bit.

I went through there back in January. Wasn't really that cold. Of course I was coming from Wisconsin. It looked pretty nice. A lot of pine trees. Quite different from the rest of Arizona I saw. Reminded me of Northeast New Mexico. Reminded me a little bit of Laramie, WY, if you have ever been there. I believe Northern Arizona University is located in Flagstaff.

Oh, and don't expect good skiing on the weekends. EVERYBODY from Phoenix makes the 2-hour drive on the weekends. Traffic is a mess. The runs are packed. Better to ski during the week if you can (if you care).

Coldest night of my life was spent sleeping in a van outside Flagstaff with a very inadequate blanket. But everything I've heard indicates the weather is absolutely beautiful if you don't mind living in a smaller city.
