I went in for a job interview today. The position was for a web developer that I applied through on Monster. I am graduating in a couple of weeks with a BBA in CIS Programming. Anyway, on to the job process stuff/hassle/questions that I am about to enter.

It was my first interview but it went real well. I thought the guy liked me and that I was a possible candidate for the job. It took me about three hours to get home and when I got back I got an email from the guy I interviewed with. The email said that I had the qualifications and skills that they were seeking. He wanted a list of my references and wanted me to confirm a potential starting date.

Now, here is where it gets tricky. On my Monster resume, I put that I wanted a starting salary requirement of 40k. I know that was probably a mistake now, but that is just a figure. He said noticed that but said that figure was above what they normally pay for a recent graduate with no experience. I do not want to blow the job nor do I want cost myself money.

What is my next move?

Email the guy back with your references and confirm your potential starting date. :)

Don't worry about the salary thing. It's always better to ask for more than less in interviews. If they want you, they will offer you the job at what they are willing to pay regardless of what you said you were looking for in salary.

Yeah, you can stress your interest in the position in your note as well.

dola,

you can always decline the offer if something better comes along.

Little Rock, eh? We need to meet up in Texarkana when the Tigers come to the Sun Bowl this year... :)

Well he got the job, but the offer was way below 40K. It was 27,500. Now to figure out if he wants it that bad or not.

You can probably counter-offer.

You can probably counter-offer.

Yeah, in most cases there is room for negotiation...

He just got an email from another company in the Little Rock area wanting to meet him. The first company knows he can't start working until May 15 (after he graduates) Should he take the first one with the intent of talking to other companies while still interviewing? OR just tell that first company no, and keep looking for something better?

And the first company told him that 27,500 was the most they ever paid somebody with no experience.

Do not accept the first job and continue interviewing with other companies.

He should have at least 10 days to give the first company his decision and extensions are usually granted. He should be able to schedule the second interview within the few weeks.

Yeah, buy time. Don't flat out reject the offer yet, though.
