The news that matters - Indiana

Disappointment

Louis Hatley, a defensive end, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class. Louis was heartbroken upon learning he had failed his final exam in Geography II, therefore failing the class. Still, he believes the exam questions were culturally biased and unfair. "Who knew America and USA were the same place?" exclaimed Louis. Neither Louis' brains nor braun will be missed this season on the playing field.

Lionel Lawton, an offensive tackle, left the team because of a lack of playing time. "After the 10th game of last year, I started to think that 'Left Out' might not be a real position" quipped Lionel.

Complaints department
Players who either think football should not require practice, or those who thought their relationship with their freshman girlfriend would last forever:

DE J.C. Farmer
WR J.B. Blades
OLB Will Zimmer
DT Danny Carvin
ILB Cedric Buckner
RB Jay Addison

Staff Changes
We were not offered any new coaching positions elsewhere, now on to other business.

My first day on the job, I held a staff meeting and then we broke for lunch. After lunch I checked my email and was hit with these delightful messages:

Travis Lincoln has left his position of scout, Mid-Atlantic region, to take over the same position at Vanderbilt University
Wesley Keith has left his position of scout, New England region, to take over the same position at Rice University.
So long boys, I hardly knew you! From what I hear they weren't happy about the stability of the coaching situtaion. ;)

But progress must continue, and we searched the open market for the best available coaches to take over their positions. We also were looking to upgrade all the eligible positions. Indiana must return to the playoffs!

At Mid-Atlantic scout there was a dubious level of talent available. Feeling beaten, we settled for hiring Darren Leinaweaver away from Georgia. We talked the ancient Melvin Pritchett (75 years old) out of retirement to take over the scouting of the New England region. Not satisfied with our southwest scout, we brought in another golden oldie, the 75 year old Brian Stancil. Rounding out the changes, welcome our new Northwest scout - Will Hampton.

Scheduling
In approaching the scheduling process, I decided I wanted to schedule one sure win & one team who should be a pretty good matchup.

I started looking for a good matchup first, figuring I could find filler later. I looked up and down the teams with similar all-time records and picked out UAB, the University of Alabama-Birmingham. After a few weeks of haggling I got them to agree to a home-and-home series, starting in Indiana. We'll take them on in week 4. UAB looks like a good fit, they've fought they're way to respectability and have made the playoffs the last two season. The game could potentially generate some TV coverage.

That left me with 6 home games and 4 road games, so I looked to fill out the schedule. Immediately I decided I wanted to schedule my alma-mater (Rutgers) and beat the piss out of them! (Sorry guys, I couldnt resist! :D) Unable to get them to travel to Indiana, I eventually settled to play them on the road in a one-shot deal. We'll travel to New Brunswick, New Jersey in week 2 and should kick off our season in style!

Here's the final picture:

Salinas, Allen 3 QB Sr* 88 96
Gaines, Charlie 14 QB So* 47 76
Farrell, Sean 9 QB* Fr 7 60
Spellman has to remain as starter. There's simply no justification in benching him, although I'll be waiting with a real short hook if things aren't going great. Charlie Gaines is an excellent 3rd stringer. He can be a successful sterter for this team someday if a better player isn't brought in. Farrell is not technically red-shirting. I don't want to risk a walk-on coming in if a QB gets hurt badly, plus burning a year of eligibility of Farrell's would be a non-issue. He's never going to start here.

Konrad, B.J. 20 RB Jr 63 65
Addison, Jay 27 RB Sr 49 49
Rosano, Darren 32 RB Sr* 46 46
Rison, Matt 29 RB So* 29 50
Wittich, Erik 21 RB Fr 39 83
Niklos, Archie 41 RB Fr 24 38
Yuck! This is a lousy RB situation. Next year I would just say "the hell with it" and start Wittich, but right now he's just not good enough to play. So we'll turn to Konrad to pound the ball. Addison should see some time at RB, but we want Konrad in there as much as possible.

Lyle, Charles 39 FB Sr* 69 86
Dunne, Oliver 22 FB* Sr 29 33
Sampson, Ken 30 FB Fr 21 99
We'll intentionally steer some carries Lyle's way, as he's about as good as Konrad. Ken Sampson looks like he has the possiblity to be something special, so you future coaches had better use him well.

DeLay, Norman 86 TE So* 36 98
Hatley, Jake 87 TE Jr 47 66
Buxo, Pat 94 TE Sr 31 52
Jeffries, Nick 89 TE Fr 35 80
It's nice to know I'm not the only one having trouble developing tight ends. Norman DeLay is going to get the start here. Hatley is slightly better now, but the playing time will really pay off for DeLay in a few years. Jeffries is a pretty good looking freshman, so if he's coached right he could be a real positve force in the future. This position should be real deep next year.

Sailer, Russell 5 WR Jr* 72 88
Parr, Jimmy 84 WR Sr* 70 76
Blades, J.B. 80 WR So* 44 63

Erickson, Deion 8 WR* Sr 50 58
Kaplan, Earl 2 WR Jr* 41 63
Shannon, Carl 82 WR Fr 20 69
Russell Sailer looks like a god. If we can feed the ball his way and if Jimmy Parr can keep the pressure off him, we could do great things in the passing game. J.B. Blades is a decent looking #3 receiver with potential, and he'll get some decent playing time. Erickson/Hemingway are a dead tie at #4. Youth must get the advantage though, so Hemingway is in. Freshman Carl Shannon will red-shirt, but it doesn't look like he'll ever amount to much.

Hoedemaker, Tyrus 54 C Sr* 71 100
O'Donnell, Leroy 57 C Sr 32 99
Pritchett, Scottie 55 C Fr 2 80
Tyrus is awesome, we will run right over him very often. Leroy O'Donnell still has a lot of development to do before he sees the field, as does freshman Scottie Pritchett.

Hauser, Peter 68 G Sr 75 75
Franz, Darren 73 G Jr* 34 56
Huang, Warren 79 G So* 32 55
Tate, Bucky 75 G Sr* 42 57
Hancock, Tito 76 G Fr 11 100
Abate, Joe 62 G Fr 3 78
Peter Hauser is a total monster guard, he'll start on the left side. Darren Franz just barely beat out Huang for the right guard spot. He's from a better high school, so I expect him to develop faster. Both freshman have tons of potential, but are a far way from reaching it.

Fogle, Vinny 65 T Sr 77 96
Carter, Les 66 T So* 27 67
Stanton, T.J. 74 T Sr* 36 47
Cucina, Les 60 T* Fr 4 22
Vinny Fogle is an excellent left tackle, making our left side amazing. Les Carter is a bit of a stretch at right tackle. Depth is so poor that I will use G Warren Huang as the primary backup at all offensive line positions. I hope he's been studying his playbook.

Cook, Tony 11 P Sr* 60 64
Cash, Bennie 18 P Jr* 56 95

Lofton, Norman 17 K Sr* 68 73
Kanu, Karl 7 K* Fr 6 6[code]
Things are looking 'ok' at both positions here. It's time to find a replacement kicker though. It's be nice for them to red-shirt next year and then take over when Lofton moves on.

Monroe, Morris 92 DE* Fr 17 31
Jerald Humphery looks like the complete package, but his run-of-the-mill stats from the last two years have me worried. Still, this is a very deep unit, and Slay, Cox, and Farmer will all see playing time. We'll rotate frequently to try to keep the guys fresh.

Nason, Rico 71 DT Jr* 26 71
Doty, Adam 97 DT Sr 24 79
Carvin, Danny 70 DT Jr 34 57
Osborne, Malcolm 63 DT So* 21 49
Cabrera, Malcolm 99 DT Fr 15 83
This is a full squad of under-achievers. The best I can hope for is a rotation at nose-tackle. This group sealed my decision to play a 3-4 defense this season.

Graham, Mo 43 ILB Jr* 57 90
Fleming, Barry 58 ILB So* 45 58

Taylor, Seth 93 OLB Jr* 37 79
Zimmer, Will 40 OLB* Jr 27 70
Wasserman, Myron 59 OLB Fr 11 49
Now that's a group of players! I really like the looks at the top 4 of both positions. Shanahan and Prescott will be on the outside, and Graham and Fleming inside. We'll work hard to get the #3 and #4 guys at both positions some playing time, there is some real depth here. Overall this is a young unit which should be great for years.

Fuller, Nicky 48 CB Sr* 67 71
Buchanan, Ed 35 CB Jr* 51 52
Banks, Jerome 49 CB So* 39 94
Kratky, Brad 24 CB* Fr 5 19
Sonnier, Jared 26 CB Fr 24 74
Kitchens, Marvin 45 CB Fr 10 53

Nellums, Blaine 31 S Sr* 67 67
Jarvis, Jorge 34 S So* 50 63
Brignac, Lamar 28 S So* 36 75
Drudge, Tom 33 S So* 41 70

We're going to need to recruit some DB's. This group is fairly overrated, and quite thin. At cornerback, Nicky Fuller and Ed Buchnan will start. Sophomore Jerome Banks will see plenty of action as the backup CB and Safety, making him the nickleback. Nellums and Jarvis will start at safety. Lamar Brignac will be the #4 CB and safety, making him our dime package DB. This unit will probably have it's share of growing pains overall.

Roster Breakdown and Recruiting Goals

Quarterback- incredibly solid at #1,2, and 3. Current quality is not the major concern here, but future quality is.
Running Back- entirely mediocre. We'll be forced to get by with what we have until Erik Wittich is ready to take over the reigns. More recruits are needed here.
Fullback- currently good, and the future also looks bright
Wide Receiver- outstanding quality right now. This unit should be good for the next few years.
Tight End- the potential is here, but can it be developed?
Center- Tryus Hoedemaker has a year beyond this one. We may need another center, because I'm not sure freshman Scottie Pritchett is the answer.
Guard- this positional is currently excellent, and very well stocked for the future.
Tackle- Another future starter must be found immediately.
Punter/Kicker- An heir to K Norman Lofton must be found immediately.
Defensive End- this is a very young & very talented group
Defensive Tackle- this unit should be strong in coming years
Inside Linebacker- probably the deepest and youngest group on the team
Outside Linebacker- another very solid unit, with both current quality and future potential.
Cornerback- while the current starters are 'good', a younger player or two definitely need to be brought in.
Safety- not enough current or future talent to suit me. this position needs help.

So looking at our list, we will pursue (in order):

Safety
Offensive Tackle
Running Back
Cornerback
Center
Quarterback

Those are our absolute top priorites. We will attempt to work aroun those needs.
