View Full Version : It's the superbowl... who do you want?

Okay, this may be a total blow-out but I'll see if it turns out to be interesting anyway...
It's the 2004 superbowl, Tom Brady went out with an injury in the 4th quarter of the conference championship... you have two QBs to choose from to start for you in the SB...
Terry Bradshaw
or
Dan Marino?
Both in their primes, ready to play... you can't switch up during the game, and you can't pick to play Brady with two broken legs, even though he could quite possibly play better (getting that one outta the way).
Who do you pick?
(I'm using the Pats so there are no ties to the Steelers, and it's a neutral team)

Yeah um, Marino throwing downfield to Swann and Stallworth? Handing off to Franco and Rocky? With the Steel Curtain shutting down the opponent? That would be pretty sweet. I have nothing against Bradshaw who accomplished alot in his career, but I would take Marino.

I remember that interview where Bradshaw is describing the thrill of a possible game-winning drive. "Gimme my guys, gimme (so and so). Gimme my timeouts" etc.
I love what Bradshaw did. I admire his affinity and love for the game. Maybe his guys wouldn't have chosen him? I don't know.

Final score will be Ditka 437, NFC team 3. They get a field goal wihle Ditka celebrates with 20 seconds left in the 1st half by doing all the cheerleaders.

Here's why I picked Bradshaw:
You have the player for one game, not for a season or longer to establish a rapport with the players. Marino is talented, sure, and an amazing passer, but guts and instant rapport and thinking are Bradshaw's key. Specifically, neither would have time to learn the offensive system, but Bradshaw called his own plays, and was an offensive coordinator on the field. Therefore, Bradshaw over Marino every time.

Marino for sure, he is smarter, a better passer and has the most come from behind victories when his team enters the fourth quarter trailing.
Now when it comes to going out after the game to celebrate, you may want to hang out with Bradshaw.

Marino called his own plays, too. In fact, one of the problems Marino and JJ had was JJ took away Marino's ability to audible. Marino was one of the smartest QB's in the league.

Marino and here's why:
Calling plays? Marino did that, johnson ruined him by taking this abitlity away.
Arm strength, no offense to Bradshaw but he couldn't touch dan's gun.
Accuracy, bradshaw had very little. Marino could hit a dime buried in the grass at 70 yards.
The real kicker is release time. The ball left marino's hands faster than any QB in the game. EVER. You get rid of the ball quick you don't get hit. Perhaps Terry would have a brain cell intact if he understood that throwing the ball sooner was better than scrambling(badly) as he did and getting kiled on every 3rd pass attempt.
Bradshaw was made great by the unbelievably superior players around him. In this situation he's the worst possible choice.
Marino EVERY time.

I can't believe this is tied. Don't you people remember 96 Maximum Flanker Post??? The man got a concussion on the play and STILL hit Swannie to make it 21-10.

The problem is that most people on this board are too young to remember watching Bradshaw play.
If it were a Joe Montana - Dan Marino debate, it would be a landslide. There's no doubt that Marino was a better passer, but people here can remember the Super Bowls that the 'Niners won. Not so much with Bradshaw.

Then it's even funnier. It's just an anti Marino vote meaning the board is spot on here.

I remember 9 and 10 very vividly, and can slightly remember 8. Surely most people here at least remember 13 and 14.

I dunno... I'm 32 in August, and the first Super Bowl I remember watching was SB16. I was only five when Bradshaw won his last Super Bowl, and I have no memory of it. I think I'm pretty "average" age-wise around here.

I tipped the scales in Bradshaw's favor! I'd pick him over Marino because Bradshaw would fit in with the Patriots offense and philosophy a lot better than Marino. A much better plug and play choice.

The reason I picked to use Bradshaw over say Montana is because Montana is generally given alot of credit for all of the Niners SB wins, where Bradshaw's contributions are often downplayed even though he won 4.
Needless to say, I voted for Bradshaw as I feel like some players have the right intangibles to be a winner - when it came time for him to come up big for the win, he did. It's been alot closer then I thought it would be though, I thought it had the potential to be a blow-out on either end.

Come to think about it, however, I did start watching sports at a young age, probably because of having brothers in their late teens, and a first cousin who lived down the street playing QB at Tech. For example, I remember when Aaron hit #715, and I was only five at the time.

Yeah...I think you just have a good memory. I was born in '74 and although I know that I watched and attended numerous sporting events, the earliest one that I can really remember wasn't until the '82 Gator Bowl (WVU/FSU). And that's probably only because we were in the stands and the weather conditions were monsoon-like.

I'll be 38 this year, I grew up 3 hours from Pittsburgh during the 70's, I watched Bradshaw play. I'll take marino, thank you.
Terry was a great handoff man, and looked flawless when the running game dominated....and that happened all the time for those teams.
Bradshaw was NOT a come back QB, he was not a major pressure QB, when severely pressed to pull one out of his ass, all he generally got was a handfull of shyte. In his defense, the DEFENSE in Pitt all those years controlled the football games. he never really had to win on his own.
Marino? as has been said, no running game. Good defenses? sometimes, not every time and certainly not dominating styles either. if you look at what Dan did, you'll see game by game that those good defenses were more a result of him running up the score early and the defense playing 11 DB's for a half.
Bradshaw was good, he was enthusiastic and he was a leader, but seriously, I saw the man play every week. Give me a marino, Fouts or even Bartkowski when the chips are down and you need a quarterback to win you a game late.
