View Full Version : Remind me again how to keep the damn 360 from fritzing?

I'm in the middle of my second qualifier against Faroe Islands and it's looking like I'm in pretty good shape...
...When I got the lovely unable to read disc error for a game I *just* bought.
This has happened twice now and it's quite obnoxious.
I love the 360, but it seems like the only games it can play without locking up are Oblivion and DoA4.
NCAA 2K6 and World Cup Germany 2K6 both lock up on me.
Do you have one of those aftermarket cooler things? My understanding is most game freezes with the 360 are related to heat issues.

Craigsca suggested I get the intercooler because my NCAA game kept stalling. I couldn't get through more than a half of football before the intercooler. Since I purchased it the game hasn't locked up once.

Cool - I'm glad it worked out for you!

There is no denying the Fritz Buff.

Where would I get the intercooler and how much would it run? Also, is there an installation involved? Wouldn't want to risk installing it myself and voiding the warranty if there is one. :)

It just snaps on the back. You should be able to get it just about any where.
One other thing i have seen suggested is to make sure the power brick isn't on the floor.

Is it too much to ask that one shouldn't have to go out and buy a cooler to actually be able to use their brandnew game system?

It's bullshit. It's now a known problem that NCAA 2007 freezes on certain 360's (on Xbox.com forums) and Microsoft says it's a problem with EA. EA claims that they haven't received lock up complaints. They’re telling everyone that they are isolated incidents.

They're $19.99 and you can find them at places like Game Stop, Game Crazy or EB's.

Thanks again, guys :) Since I've to go to work tonight, I'll see if I can pick it up at Gamestop on my break.

Comes with the territory of rushing your system out to be first.

I've read that the PS3 will have the same brick-style power supply. I would assume it's going to have heat issues as well...

My NCAA 2007 has frozen up about every other day since I got it last week. It's only frozen one other time...two weeks ago during a game of NBA 2k6. I just bought the intercooler thing, so hopefully that'll fix the problem. $20 at Gamestop.

Just an FYI if you don't already know this in regards to new stuff coming out for the 360 when the PS3 launches.
M$ will roll the prices on the system a $100 on top of that, they will release the larger Hard Drive as well as a HD DVD drive to compete with the PS3

Oi, bought the intercooler and installed it...
Lockup and blah blah blah in the middle of the game again.
Blah.

Hmm - I've also noticed a dramatic difference if there is/is not airflow around the device. I keep mine in a cabinet and leave the cabinet open when the 360 is on. So...make sure that the enclosure (if there is any) around the 360 is left open.
