Some asshat named Paul Lucas writes an article for ESPN.com called UniWatch and keeps a blog of the same name at uniwatchblog.com.
Yesterday he wrote a column where he ripped Ron Santo for, among other things, being a diabetic:
"I know we’re all supposed to feel sorry for Santo, what with the diabetes and the amputations (insert pants/stirrups joke here), along with the Hall of Fame snub. But seriously, is there a bigger embarrassment on the airwaves than this guy? Has there ever been? Can’t even imagine what it must be like to have to listen to this hokum on a daily basis."
I mean, seriously. This jerkoff has never heard Ronny on the radio, and he's going to dismiss him as an embarassment based on a transcript he read? And then he's going to make fun of his diabetes and his amputations?
PLEASE write this scumbag at
[email protected] and let him know what a douchebag he is.

I like mocking amputees as much as the next guy, but even I think that's got some serious douchebaggery to it. Thankfully his columns suck anyways so not many people are likely to have read that stuff.

The diabetes/amputation stuff is a cheap shot and this guy sounds like a tool, but that being said, Santo is pretty terrible on the air. I've never been a fan of the wildly emotional radio color commentator who shouts over the play-by-play when something big happens. As a listener I know something bad's happening because Santo's going "No-ooooooo! Ohhhhhhhhh MAN!" but it takes a good minute and a half to figure out the details because he just drowned out Hughes' entire call.

I don't think that this guy was particularly cool in how he delivered the message, but can anyone who didn't see Santo play really stand listening to him call a ball game? He is just terrible. I honestly have no idea how Hughes puts up with him.

I think this doucebaggery deserves some teabaggery.

There are few things in this world that I think are worse radio than Ron Santo. Having to listen to him consistently is one of the most painful parts of my experience as a Cub fan. I really like Pat Hughes, and I do admit that they have nice chemistry. But I swear that the extent of the analysis you can expect from Ron is something along the lines of "oh man. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man."

You have obviously never heard Jim Price call any Tiger's games. Throw in his partner Dan Dickerson for that matter. "So and so wants to really have a good season this year!" Commentary for half-wits, dare not offend the powers that be with real analysis. Just ask Mark Champion, former Lion's announcer.

I have not heard them, this is true. But I would also point out that you are giving an example of a complete expressed thought, something Ron is capable of doing perhaps 25% of the time.
