Strange, but I always thought that going for it on 4th down in the 1st quarter was "unrealistic". I saw it at least twice this weekend in the Steelers/Fins game and the Giants/Colts game. I believe the Giants (maybe the Colts) went for it on 4th and 5.

When someone would cheese me online by going for it on their first possession, I'd think that is totally unrealistic. Now I'm thinking that if they do it once, but not every possession, that might be okay.

On another note, my game keeps on freezing up online. I had that problem with the Madden 06 Xbox 360 version offline. Yesterday it froze up about 75% of the time. I don't think I completed a game.

You gotta look at the situation when they go for it, though. If the ball is +/- 3 yards from the opposing teams 40 yard line, a punt may only net 17-23 yards. So it's definitely a risk/reward type situation. I could play you online, and if you went for it on those type of situations all the time, I wouldn't think it was cheese.

Cheese would be going for it on your side of the 50, a totally unrealistic scenerio except in the 4th quarter usually.

And even there, sometimes it happens. Denver/St. Louis. 4th and a full yard at the Denver 29 and the Broncos go for it. Nothing fancy either, just a power run to the right. A lot of things happened for it to get to that point, but it was still a strange call.

I've always felt like it was an advantage to go for it on 4th down in Madden. I think I finally figured out why. It seems to me that playing Madden seems to result in a lot more big plays. There seem to be less drives that take 25 plays and eat up 8:00 of clock time. So if that is actually true, then it would make sense that to give up the ball 30-50 yards closer in Madden doesn't really matter. If they're gonna score, they're gonna score. It doesn't matter how close they are to start the drive.

Or something.
