Does this game expose Clemson (and the whole ACC) as being completely overrated, or are the lot of teams at the top of the ACC standings - Clemson, Georgia Tech, Boston College, and now VPI - actually pretty good teams?
Wolfpack
10-27-2006, 09:15 AM
I think both. Clemson is always a trendy choice for best in the ACC since the coach has the last name of Bowden, but usually at some point in the season, they'll slip on a banana peel (or two or three, depending on how things are going). As for the ACC as a whole, there are a number of good teams, but we don't have a monster team like Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, USC, WVU, or L'Ville. You'll hear the ACC is down because we don't have that great team, but you'll never hear how the other leagues are "top-heavy", especially, say, the Big Ten, Pac-10, or Big 12. The ACC just has a bunch of teams that are capable of beating each other depending on where and when the game is played. This is not to say that the ACC is great in 2006, but it's awful hard to look good when everyone's got a loss already at the halfway mark of the conference season and the majority have two or more losses. The current state of play in the league seems to indicate that there will be a lot of tiebreaking done to determine who's playing in Jacksonville. I've never seen the ACC so scrambled in the standings as I have this year.

Here's something I've been wondering about: Who is the best QB in the ACC? I'd probably have to go with Ryan at BC, which is scary. Even scarier is that he is pretty much head and shoulders above anyone else. This has to be the weakest group of starting quarterbacks in the history of the ACC.

I was trying to think of OOC games that the ACC has played in. Do they have many marquee OOC wins this year or did the teams schedule light, thinking they would get beat up in conference?
I know Clemson-South Carolina, Florida-FSU, and Georgia-GT will be later in the season, but the only significant OOC games I can recall are the close GT-Notre Dame game and the Miami-Louisville game.
And the reason I ask, is that it is really too soon to tell how good or bad the ACC is because they have really only beat up on each other. I think if they win some of those rivalry games and their fair share of bowl games, people can say the ACC has parity and beats itself up. If they lose most of their bowl games and OOC rivalry games, you would have to say that they lost a lot of talent in the draft and had a bad year.

The game between Texas-Texas Tech tomorrow night has me a bit worried. Texas usually doesn't play well in Lubbock. Texas Tech has been hot and cold this year, scoring only 3 points and giving Colorado their first win of the year, to scoring 42 the next game in their victory over Iowa State. They view Texas as their main rival, but the 'Horns don't see it that way, with OU and A&M much higher on the rival scale. Mike Leach is going to have his team fired up and ready. That, combined with the poor play and injuries in UT's secondary, make for an interesting game.

The ACC is 27-11 in OOC games, but not many marquee matchups - you hit the highlights. Upcoming games against bigger teams are are GT-UGA, UNC (haha)-ND, Clemson-USC, FSU-UF.

Only punt of the first half in ND-Navy comes with about :30 left... ND leads 24-14 at the half. Navy has punted and missed a FG, ND has 3 TDs and a FG. The option is working well for the Mids, racking up 212 yards rushing in the first half.. but Quinn is 11-15 for 196, 2-0.

So I guess the legging bending to the side was acting, huh? Come on... Bad angle by the Mizzou player and it was indeed a penalty - maybe not a roughing, but definitely a penalty.
Good win for the Sooners, but they did some things poorly that were covered up by all the Mizzou mistakes. Daniel's going to be a good one, but the OU defense looked fairly solid today, coming up with some big plays. And the running game for OU was nice as well.
I think Mizzou's a good team, and they're going to be much better in the coming years. If they can put some talent, maybe a running game, around Daniel, they're going to be a force in the North.

Is anyone else having weird problems with the audio for the HD games? I can't hear the announcers at all in the FLA-GA game, but the crowd noise comes in perfectly over all speakers. I felt is was defintely a 5 yard running into, but no way it was a 15 yarder. That's why I put '15 yard' in my quote. The side camera angle showed the punter landing with two feet on the ground then falling over.

Yeah, I agree that it was only a 5 yarder - it wasn't brutal enough to be roughing. The Mizzou player missed him with his body, but his legs swiped through and nailed that back leg of Cohen. I don't think his falling down was "acting." His leg looked to have been hit pretty hard.

UGA gets the ball back at their own 42 after forcing a punt ... and promptly gets handed a 3-and-out. Punting it back to Florida with 3:50 to play, Gators still lead 21-14. Florida has missed a pair of 40ish yd FG's today to keep this one in doubt.

Really? OSU losing their last game to Michigan would still keep them ahead of an undefeat Louisville or West Virginia? That'd be kinda whack, in my opinion.

I think the arguments against the OSU/Mich loser playing in the title is that it is too late in the season for them to recover in the human polls from AND the human voters, outside of B10 country, would probably shy away from giving the loser the chance to make the season series a 1-1 tie, as then there would still be a question as to which is the better team.

Dunno. My original point was that WVU and Louisville now appear to have their fate in their own hands, because one of them going undefeated will almost certainly finish #2. (WVU would definitely, Louisville very likely).
So my real point is that OSU, Michigan, WVU and Louisville are all in the driver's seat.
Now if Louisville beats WVU and Rutgers beats Louisville (lets dream), I think all hell breaks loose for the eventual #2 spot in the polls.

Well, lets say for sure that Louisville just jumped up to #5 (OSU, Michigan, WVU, Texasm, Louisville). I think the odds are decent that they can leapfrog Texas with a win over the #3 team in the country on Thursday night. At that point it's in their hands to finish #2 in the human polls.
Unless their computer numbers are horrible, I can't see what will stop them.
Easy Mac
10-28-2006, 06:26 PM
dola, Rutgers is currently #6 in the computer average (possibly up to %5 depending on how USC lands). The only thing holding them down is no love in the polls. If you gave them WVU polls, they'd be #3 (after factoring USC's loss)

I just dont think they can climb high enough in the human polls to make it matter. They would probably need losses by:
Texas, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, Notre Dame and maybe Arkansas
What are the odds of all of that happening?
edit: Not to mention that Rutgers simply isn't that good. I'll be the first to admit it. 10-2 is a possibility right now, with 11-1 being the absolute ceiling in my opinion.

well, auburn/arkansas or tennessee/florida have to lose. Tennessee has LSU. Tennessee and Arkansas play each other. Arkansas plays LSU. Florida is @FSU. ND is @USC. Then the SEC title game. Its not out of the question that all those teams could lose (plus Texas is down by 14).
So:
Tenn L to LSU
Ark L to Tenn/LSU
Florida L to FSU
Auburn L to Florida in SEC Champ.
Notre Dame L to USC
Texas L to TT
I'd put the odds of some kind of permutation actually occurring at around 30% at least.

True, but you could argue that the BCS has also disincentiveized playing good teams out of conference. Computer polls are 1/3 and if the human polls agree the computers mean less as you get toward the top of the polls (where there's going to be the least difference usually). Taking out the SOS and QW components have hurt. I think taking out margin of victory out of the computer polls has been the worst though. The BCS is a good system, but has tried to appease the public too much and its quality has gone down.

WVU's big win over Maryland earlier in the season is going to start looking better if the Terps keep winning. They are 6-2 w/ a loss to ranked WVU and a close loss to ranked GT (who is now looking like the class of the ACC). They could be ranked tomorrow.
