I've been hoping for 20 years they could win one more while he was still around - and they never really came close. My first sports memory is the last Celtics championship.

I always hated the Celtics being a Lakers fan and all, but I loved Auerbach.

Some of his trades were just insane. It was like he was light years ahead of everyone else in the NBA until the early-mid 1980s.

This had to be his best:

Celtics — Traded two 1980 first round picks (#1-Joe Barry Carroll) (#13-Rickey Brown) to Warriors for Robert Parish, 1980 first round pick (#3-Kevin McHale) on 6/9/80

Also, Cliff Hagan and Ed Macauley for Bill Russell. That was a pretty brave trade in Boston at the time, trading a popular Irish white guy for a moody, intimidating black guy. It didn't go over well with the fans at first.

I used to hear so much growing up about how the Celtics were a racist franchise. It drove me crazy. Auerbach didn't get enough credit for his progressiveness in that area. He's responsible for drafting the first black NBA player, starting the first all-black starting 5, and most importantly, hiring the first black head coach in any major professional American sports league.
