Anybody getting this one? I'll probably get it within a week(thank you Best Buy Gift Cards), but I was curious if anybody will be playing it at midnight tonight or tomorrow. :)

I had this pre-order paid off a couple months ago, and got the call that it'll be in tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, I probably won't get around to grabbing it until later that night. :(
I'm getting it between my two classes tomorrow. Circuit city is selling it for 38 bucks

I'll get it eventually, but there are too many good games out right now to find time to play it.
Have Friday - Wednesday off. Majority of time spent will likely be with this game.

I'll get it eventually. Probably wait for the reviews though. If it turns out to be another FF8, I'll wait awhile.

Meh. This is the first FF since FFIV for the SNES that I'm not excited about playing. I find my interest in "ragtag bunch of rebels out to save the world" type games to be waning in the past couple of years.

From what I read, the plot is different from other FF. That's why some FF fans dont like this game..

For the GBA, I believe it was. Though, I wouldn't know if the theme/background of FF12's Ivalice is the same as GBA FFT's.
Can't remember if PS1's FFT was Ivalice... nor can I find my copy. :(

This game had my wife and I stumped. She loves the Final Fantasy games and we were at Hastings a while back (a month or two) and they had it out to rent. She decided not to get it that night and put it back on the shelf.
The next week she wanted to get it and it wasn't there.
Wasn't there the next week either. WTF? People must be loving the game!
Now I see this and know the game was never out. Someone at Hastings screwed something up. They sell games so maybe it was a pre-order thing they were supposed to put out and had it in the wrong section, but I looked in the for-sale section and never say anything there either.

Yeah, since about halfway through FF 7 I haven not played but maybe 15-20 per game because it is now considered 'her' game in my mind. Of course she likes to play 'my game', Grand Theft Auto too. My problem here is that she just likes to drive over people, and beat the shit out of them. I can only take so much of watching that so she is limited to doing that when I am not home pretty much. :D

I'm pretty impressed so far, about an hour or so into it. The graphics are pretty good, and the storyline seems a bit more...adult, I guess? The new battle system is nice -- I love not having to continually hit "Attack" over and over again. I have yet to put Gambits to use, but the License system is pretty cool, allowing you to develop your characters as you see fit. I'll keep you guys updated as I continue on through the game.

IGN stated its very slow at first, say the first 3 hours, then picks up and tells one of the best stories ever. Key they said is how it does not follow one lead character, but many. IGN gave it a 9.5 i believe, which for them is pretty damn good.

I haven't picked it up yet...my hesitation in doing so is that I so rarely play full-on console games anymore. It's not that I don't like them so much as they're really not convenient, I'm much happier playing my DS (and every so often, my PSP). Some of it is the convenience factor. I like to play video games in bed and I'll be darned if I can do that with my PS2.
I will undoubtedly pick it up at some point. I have played and beaten every FF except the Japanese FFIII (never released stateside, will be getting it when it comes out for the DS next month or so), FFVII and FFXI. FFVII is the one I've never owned, and I own FFXI but never felt like paying to play it.
Plus, right now, I have some DS games to finish (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Contact, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow).

Ive played about 4 hours so far and it's been pretty good so far.
+ Balthier is the best Final Fantasy character.
+Good Story and Great voice acting
+No random battles and more KOTOR gameplay.*thank god!*
+Nice graphics/art for a PS2 game
-Music so far is not as good as previous FF games
-License system, i dont like how it works. you have to pay for magic, etc
Coming from someone who doesnt like FF, it's very promising.

I am about 3.5 hours in and I just got in the sewers with Balthier and Fran.
Can't agree more here, Balthier is fantastic. Fran voice was weird, I was hoping for more of a sexy european voice.
This game so far is fantastic, and this is supposed to be the slow period?
I think the music is above average, I think Sakimoto is brilliant (did the FF Tactics OST amongst others), I am just surprised that in the opening scenes, there were remakes of FF songs, instead of a new song or two.
The remakes of the classic FFIV songs were awesome in the intro. Enjoying it so far.

My co-worker and I were just talking about the game again today, and he mentioned he was reading up on a board where someone else had already beaten the game.
Apparently, he had a crazy setup for the 'Gambits' (relatively 16 total? I'll have to find that link) and never had to press a button at the very end of the game to beat it.

The game is interesting. I like how they applied things they learned from the shouldn't-have-been-numbered-11 FF11 while still maintaining the spirit of FF by and large. I can certainly understand why some people wouldn't like it, but I think it's going to be a pleasant experience. I haven't been this excited to play a game since 10 came out early in 01.

How many farging FINAL fantasies can there be?
Just call it Fantasy.
I still haven't purchased it, just figured I'd add this useless trivia...
Square Co., Ltd. first entered the Japanese video game industry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_and_video_game_industry) in the mid 1980s, developing a variety of simple RPGs for Nintendo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo)'s Famicom Disk System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famicom_Disk_System) (FDS), a disk-based peripheral (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripheral) for the Family Computer (also known as the "Famicom," and known internationally as the Nintendo Entertainment System). By 1987, declining interest in the FDS had placed Square on the verge of bankruptcy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bankruptcy). At approximately the same time, Square designer Hironobu Sakaguchi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hironobu_Sakaguchi) began work on an ambitious new fantasy role playing game for the cartridge-based Famicom, inspired in part by Enix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enix)'s popular Dragon Quest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Quest) (known to some in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) as Dragon Warrior). [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fantasy#_note-1) Sakaguchi had plans to retire after the completion of the project so he named it Final Fantasy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_%28video_game%29) because it was his final game, although it was also going to be Square's final game. In fact, it's commonly believed that the game was named Final Fantasy because of Square and not Sakaguchi, although Sakaguchi himself has confirmed it was named because of his plans for retirement. Either way, Final Fantasy turned out to be far from Square's or Sakaguchi's last game. Final Fantasy reversed Square's lagging fortunes, and became their flagship franchise.

I'm loving this game thus far. This is easily the best FF since FF Tactics. Engrossing characters and a storyline that's kept me interested for the time being.
I *love* the License system. It's the closest thing to a Job class system since the actual Job class system in Tactics and 5.

I haven't really beaten up the license system yet, and I am still a little relunctant to start using up points and end up going in the wrong direction. I have just pretty much been saving up except for Libra and the +50HP.

BTW - I think the music is very good, it fits the settings well and while (so far, or at least I've heard) there isn't a "memorable" song to come away from this game with. I think the music is well done.

I'm with Izulde on the no spoilers thing. I'm blissfully ignorant of most of the story for the first time in years (for a Final Fantasy game, anyways), and I'd prefer not to have anything spoiled. All right! Level 4 baby! I am really rolling now. I guess I had better go save. It has been quite a bit since I hit one of those little blue crystals. Oh wait..there are some more monsters. I have been mowing down everything else so I will just knock these off before I go. Hmm..they don't look familiar as I am getting closer. Oh well...ATTACK! OK, I got a good hit in. WOW! Did he just take out my guy with one hit?? Crap, I had better heal him up ..... CRAP!! There goes the other one! Game Over??? Well, that is something I have never seen in FF X or X-2.

Hint- When you target something, look at the name. If it's blue, they die. Yellow named things take longer.
Only seen one red. That dinosaur outside of the city. Based on what you've said, I imagine that means "run or die."
I saw the T-rex when i was walking around the desert and I got the hell out of his way. I remember running into a T-Rex early on in FFVIII and that did not end well. I'm about 14 hours into the game and still having a blast. Usually when I play FF games leveling up is a chore; In this game it's fun.

I am a bit over 30 hours into the game (Im lucky enough not to have a real job). To answer a few questions loot just sell it off so far there isnt an alchemy pot or anything like in Dragon Quest 8 where you can make cool things its just the way you get money as far as I can tell.
On the License board I am getting points faster than I can spend them still so dont be afraid to use them especially going down and left on the top board where the augments are. These are the things that will help your characters most in the early stages ( I didnt spend them when I started either and I was struggling for awhile). They have things like +50 hp -10% magic cost and boosting magic, attack and potion powers ect.
The one thing I havent gotten into at all is the techniques simply because I have never really had enough money to buy them. Money stays tight for at least the first 30 hours if you are progressing at a moderate speed and not just leveling up like mad.

The scenes/lands are so vast, I was walking around the two seasands for hours. HOURS.
I really need like a guideline or a suggestions link to "how to build your licenses?" because I've barely spent anything on licenses and my team is starting to get whooped on. So instead of experimenting with buying stuff, I have just done nothing and thats leading to problems.
If anybody is wondering about the difficulty of this game, I've already died 7 times. It could be b/c of the licenses, but I doubt it, in some instances I've just gotten whooped on, started with the wrong enemy or went into a place I shouldn't be yet.

The licenses are pretty straight forward to me. If you've played a lot of FF, then you know which type of characters use each type of armor/weapons/etc.
EDIT - I forgot to mention, something. If your specialize your characters, for example make Penelo a healer, then there is certain types of armor that give boosts to the White Magic(healing). Then, there are other types that gives boosts to Black Magic(attack). The Light Armor gives HP bonuses. So, based on how you build each character dictates which type of armor to use. I've only played with Vaan and Penelo, so I don't know how all of the other characters are. Vaan is initially setup to be a generic fighter type character and Penelo is initially setup to be the healer/support character.
GameFaqs already has a licenses FAQ up that has some useful information.

But you don't -have- to follow the initial set-up.
For example. I'm turning Vaan into something of a Red Mage, with proficiency in Black/White magic and kick ass swordsman skills. Admittedly I'm equipping him with magic armour rather than heavy, so he's more magic-heavy than a true Red Mage.

I've had more license points then I've known what to do with, so I pushed all the characters toward the quickening limit break things. They're costly, but fun to rip off 7 or 8 in a row when you've got a boss with 40% health left.
I also wish they had done this battle system starting in Final Fantasy 6 or so. All I've got the gambits really doing right now is
1. Foe=100%---> Steal (only for Vaan/Penelo)
2. Ally <50%----> Cure
3. Foe=Nearest Visible----> Attack
And a couple that remove sleep and confuse status
Grinding and leveling up is *so* much easier now. No 5 second break while the screen loads, no need to press "X" for attack 6 times every fight. And when I run into a boss fight, a status that can't be fixed (don't have gambits to order poisona, etc. yet) or find a mark that I'm hunting, I start taking manual control and overriding the gambits.
So yeah, it is kind of an auto-pilot. But how much piloting was I really doing in FF7 when I spent 3 hours in Mideel leveling up Materia?

I can see the story starting to pick up. I really like the way they went with the beginning of the game. The way they introduce you to the game and the characters is well done.
I have a feeling this might be my favorite FF.

I'm about 30+ hours in now and am still having a blast. It's ridiculous. I have to force myself to stop playing it.
I'm filling up the license board quite quickly for each character.. well for what they need for what I want them to have. As soon as I saw the Augment for 155 LP, I thought, whoa, I ain't gonna get that.. then I saw what it was for then I sent all my characters straight to that spot! lol
Its fun! I think Vaan for me is level 29. I've had fun taking out some of the hunted monsters, but had trouble with Gil Snapper a few levels ago and may try it up again against him... Vaan is 29, but everyone else is, 20, 22, 24, 25, 28, or something close to that... so I need to start getting some more balance.
Who are everyone's main cast? I use Vaan, Basch and Penelo almost all the time. Penelo casts haste all day long while slowing the foes down(and curaga when needed), then Vaan and Basch beat the shit out of each one. It rawks!
Bathier, Basch and Ashe.. How can you not use Bathier? He's the best character in the game! :D

Balthier is definitely freaking awesome. I've been spending most of my license points on the lower left corner of the upper board -- the enhancements area. They seem to be the best bet at this point. I don't have access to many weapons and armor yet (only level 7 about 5 hours in), so I'll wait to move up in those categories. To people that are a bit further than I am -- have you noticed much of a difference in armor? I just had the option to buy better armor for the first time, but it was going to be hundreds of Gil to get +1 in defense over what I already had. I bought one so I could compare, but haven't noticed much of a difference, so it seems that the armor would be a waste of Gil at this point.

I'm at level 30ish and I'm finding armor to cost about 5400 if you want the best of the best. Like someone said earlier though, you'll want to eventually get armor that suits your character though.
However, when you go through your licensing some more beyond level 7, you'll see a very wide variety of types of armor. There'll be heavy, light, magical armors to name a few..

dola,
The section I'm now in with a nasty boss at the end of an already vicious segment before it is proving to be a pain in the ass. I may have to buy some more gambits and do some re-adjusting or something.
Edit: Or even level up.

I finally got past the next stage in which I took some more time off to do more hunts! I'm able to kill the Level III Hunts pretty easily now. I'm too scared to try IV at the moment. I did kill Gil Snapper, finally!
Izulde, I don't use many gambits at the moment.. just the basic ones that will allow me to cure my chars and do little spells.. but beyond that, I haven't seen a dire need for it. I know I will eventually need them though.
This game seems to be very linear; while I liked the non-linear aspect of FFX, I felt like I got lost at times with it and I couldn't tell ya right now which way I'd prefer. I really don't like having to have teleport stones to tele though, that gets annoying when you just want to do hunts for a while; you'll run out quickly.

All right, so it looks like I need to level. Fair enough. Cuz that boss is a real asshat.

Who wants to talk to me about Basch? I want to clear something up. I kind of wasn't paying attention at a time when I should have been and I think I may have missed something.

Which game are you playing? FFX was probably the most linear of all the FFs. Aside from FFMQ.
FFXII is much more open. I have a ton of teleport stones myself, I steal from everything and I get quite a few from bats.

I had the gil snapper down to barely any HP but then all of sudden he starts casting tons of blizzard spells. My party died quicky :-\

Heh. Perhaps that is true, I guess I probably can't remember all that well. I just remember being able to choose which army to be on... and you could go to other places to do whatever you wanted in whatever order you wanted.
This one, there is only one thing you can do for the story line; yeah there are hunts.. but its not directly related to the story line.

This is not true about FFX at all. FFX was 100% linear. There was no breaking away from the story line at all.

Could you be talking about FFX-2 possibly? That was much more open-ended than any of the main stream FFs (at least, the ones that I've played extensively).

I just beat the game today wthout really meaning to. Took about 60 hours and I had all my chars leveled to the 50-52 range and I didn't do most of the side quests and only about 20 hunts or so. I probably could have done it in alot less time if I had any clue about the LP board and the mist charges when I started but I spent 30 hours of the game with basically no magic points.
Overall I enjoyed the game but did feel a bit constrained at times. Part of this is probably just what I enjoy about this series seemed to be lacking in the fact that I could not customize my weapons/armor like in 7 or 10. The gambits are cool after you get the hang of them but it felt a bit like I was just progaming my chars to do the work for me.
The story is good but not great overall. I do like the change from the standard love story but at times I felt slightly unmotivated.
Overall I give it a solid 8 out of 10 pending a change from when I go pick up the strategy guide and see all of the stuff I have missed. Im weird I like to play the game blind once then go buy the strat guide and max out everyone the second time I play it. I will probably put that off a month or so though.

I just went through what was probably my least enjoyable few hours of the game... but that is out of the 60 hours I've put into it already.
I don't think I'm that close to beating the game(although I may be..) but I'm sitting at level 50ish for most of my characters and I've done about 26 hunts.
I love this game tremendously and its a step in the right direction when the game goes back to being a typical save the world with a love story like apoc said.. I like those and I will look forward to playing those storylines again. Nothing against this one at all.
*small spoiler alert*
My not-so-enjoyable part of the game was during the Ancient City run.. I couldn't figure out where to go and I spent a bit too long trying to figure out where I had to go and all I had to do was 'run' off a ledge. Mmk. Anyhow, I'm glad that part is over.. :)

Time for me to spend the next 3 hours playing before going to see Beerfest at the second-run theatre.
