November 1, 2006 - A collection of the biggest powers in consumer electronics, including LG, Matsushita (Panasonic), Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, and SiBEAM announced today that they are teaming together to ratify a standard for wireless high-def signal transmission. United as a technology group going under the name WirelessHD, the companies aim to have a finalized specification in spring 2007.

The WirelessHD (WiHD) standard will allow for uncompressed, digital transmission of HD video and audio signals, essentially making it equivalent, in theory, to wireless HDMI. The signal will operate on the 60 GHz frequency band and apparently will sport the bandwidth required to support both current and future HD signals. HDMI 1.3 currently rocks 10.2-Gbps, and it must be assumed that WiHD will aim to be even faster. The 60-GHz band currently requires line of sight between transmitter and receiver, but this obviously will not suit the real goal of the WiHD, which is to allow components to be tucked away in a cabinet eliminate the tangle of wires that currently mars otherwise elegant looking hang-on-the-wall plasmas and LCDs. The technology consortium aims to overcome this limitation, if it hasn't done so already.

A ubiquitous wireless HD standard would do a lot to improve interoperability among devices, and would also expand the capabilities of personal video players, PDAs, and other handheld devices. We'll be following the technology as it develops, so stay tuned.
IMHO, this is a good step towards cleaning up the backs of TVs. I'm all for it.

I'm not really big into the consumer electronics world...can you explain why?

Easy. The content companies are horrified with how easy the current signal is to download/copy. This has fair usage, such as Tivos/VCR's etcetera, but also has unfair (illegal) uses.. like using on unapproved devices (for example, the only way you can play DVD's on a Linux computer is by using a program that the content companies say is illegal (called DeCSS)) or for illegal copying/filesharing.

So as part of the next generation digital content comes into play, the content companies are insisting that the datastream be protected with what's known as a "broadcast flag" and that all digital devices capable of recording/displaying that datastream honor the flag that prohibits copying of the datastream, EVEN FOR FAIR USE PRINCIPLES.

Well explained. Thank you sir.

Frankly I'd be happier if they made wireless speakers. I hate having to run all that damn speaker wire throughout the house.

Seems like you'd need some high bandwidth wireless to carry an HD signal ... otherwise you're going to have to compress/decompress the signal again and you're going to get further degradation.

They do make wireless speakers. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

Quality ones for your stereo? I've never seen a decent pair. Any recommendations?
