Anybody watching/listening to the Falcons/Lions? I am listening on the radio and I thought that referee was about to say, "Lambda Lambda Lambda and Omega Mu." For some reason his voice reminded me of that guy from Revenge of the Nerds.

Saints the best looking NFC contender this week! :) Good to see they could get it done without Joe Horn and with an undrafted rookie dressing out in his first game to start at LT. This team is certainly something special; Marques Colston should be one of the bigger stories in the NFL right now.

I haven't been able to watch the game, but following it on the web this has been perhaps the most aggravating Packers game of the entire season. They completely dominated Buffalo in almost every aspect of the game. They outgained the Bills 427-184, got 26 1st downs to Buffalo's 10, were penalized half as many times as Buffalo, controlled the clock (34-26), and were better on 3rd downs (7/16 vs. 2/11). Buffalo won by 2 TDs because of stupid, amateurish turnovers. From the Packers gameday blogs I've read Buffalo didn't even make good plays to get those turnovers - the Packers just seem to have been careless.
And MM calling a pass play on 1st & 1 from the 1? Stupid. Astonishingly stupid.

You can't say it's incidental when he reached out to grab him. It doesn't matter anyway...when a guy's helmet turns around, and a player has his hand in the facemask, it's going to be a personal foul call.
sabotai
11-05-2006, 03:16 PM
The facemask was a judgement call on the officials IMO, but generally it doesn't matter if it's incidental or not, once the head turns to the side, it's a 15-yarder more times than not.

based on that definition, every facemask would be 15 yards...they ALL occur with someone reaching out to grab the guy. his hand was on the mask for a half second and taylor didn't even seem to break stride.
when I saw the replay I was expecting one of those yank and pull jobs. the guy was just flying through the air and his hand caught the mask. not like the helmet twisted on taylor's head or anything. it was the definition of incidental.

Actually, shouldn't they be 8-0 now? Where is Render when you need him?
Seriosuly, though, I have Palmer as my fantasy starter at QB most weeks, but I sat him this week for Brees (great move). So I am usually rooting for the Bengals (and CJ is on my squad, too).

Well done, Lions!
Good win here. In the grand scheme of things the Lions are still 2-6, but this was a big win for the team. They were comming off the bye week and it's important to finally see some progress and start generating some confidence.
The Lions' next three games are SF at home, Arizona on the road, and Miami at thome. Those are all "winable" games, even for the Lions. Hopefully they'll take at least 2 of them.

Well based on your definition, a personal foul facemask will only occur if the defender thinks beforehand "the only way I'm going to be able to bring him down is if I grab and pull on his facemask." I can remember about 2 instances of that...a few weeks ago when Antrel Rolle almost decapitated Larry Johnson, and about 8 years ago when Warren Sapp almost ended Jerry Rice's career with the most disgusting facemask job of all time.
The vast majority of the 15 yarders are from a player trying to make the tackle, and instead of grabbing onto the shoulders or the chest, they miss and grab the facemask. You're getting caught up in the "incidental" wording of the 5 yard call. That's used when a tackle is made, and in doing so, one of the defender's hands drapes across the facemask of the runner. There's no pulling or grabbing on involved.

The refs didn't lose the game for Cinci, but this season, the calls just aren't there late in games, or theyre just bad calls in favor of the other team. Cincinnati shouldn't put themselves in these situations, but this is the NFL, they play the whole game, and they fight hard to have a chance to win at the end when a ref defends a pass in the red zone that would have been an easy 10 yards or so, so Cinci had to kick a field goal- No big deal, it happens. But the late no call on a pretty obvious pass interference is about the 3rd or 4th time a major call has really hurt at the end of a game this year.
I'm not saying it is why Cinci lost, though it didn't help, but damn.. The calls just aren't going the right way for them late in the last 4 games.

I didn't get to see it either, but on the post game show McCarthy said they were trying to catch the Bills in between personnel changes on the 1st and 1 from the 1. But I agree with you guys, Ahman had been running great and from there it was almost a sure TD. Just another heartbreaking loss along with that Rams loss have ruined what would otherwise be a good season for this young team. And now they have 3 tough games in the next 3 weeks and they'll have to play perfect to win any of them.

We'll agree to disagree. I've seen many, many instances where a player grabs the facemask (intentionally or not) but then holds on or pulls (this part is clearly intentional) in order to attempt the tackle. That's a 15 yard penalty. when a guy grabs the mask by accident and lets go immediately, it's "incidental" and considered a 5 yard penalty.
whether or not the guy is actually tackled has nothing to do with the penalty. the penalty is a judgement call based on the defender's intent.

So in FOF terms, the defense looked familiar with that play? Mike McCarthy can't do anything right in my book, so ignore me. First Packer coach I have truely disliked. Once in a while I will give him some credit for something that has gone well, but I usually just chock that up to being an accident on his part, and not actually a good decision by him. :D

Yeah, and for what it's worth I'm fairly sure that if MM had called a run play there Ahman Green would've fumbled (that's just the way things were going for them today). Then I'd be bitching and moaning about MM deciding to run when he could've tried to catch them in a personnel change with a quick slant pass. :p

The NFL does everything they can to remove the need to judge intent from the referees. The different facemask penalties are called based on severity. Twisting, turning, or pulling an opponent by the facemask will get 15 yards. If you see the head turn, it is almost always 15 yards.
It might be just me, but I found it hilarious when it shows what the Giants have done on there last 3 red zone possessions:
DOWNS
TD
PUNT
They were on the 9 (i think, miht have been closer) yd line and were pushed so far back they had to punt, although I was pissed they didnt score, still found it amusing.

The Broncos could have put the Steelers away a long time ago if they knew how to tackle. For at least the past 4 years, I've watched the Broncos miss tackles at first contact and allow big gains. This non-call for Cincy isn't nearly as bad as the "roughing the passer" call they had several games ago. That one was on 4th down and Cincy stopped them. No penalty and that game is over. In today's game, Cincy still had a long way to go, and even if there's a penalty it's no guarantee that Cincy scores a TD, but they should have at least had the chance.

You have noticed this is the NFL right? The way holding is called in the NFL is akin to the way traveling is called in the NBA... you have to nearly grab a guy around the waist and take him down to get called, and even then you might be able to get away with that late in an important game.
The Bengals need to quit crying and pull together, or they might as well close up shop and file for 8-8 or 7-9 right now. Although I have to say, the schedule they were handed this year is beyond ridiculous. That's one reason that the NFL seems to have "parity"... all the up and coming good teams get killed by their schedule if they have a good year or two, while teams that have one or two down years can get healthy the following season by feasting on all the last place teams that appear on their schedule.

Rudi Johnson running over Ray Lewis for a TD was pretty sweet though. I thought the emotion that play generated might bring the Bengals back... but instead, Palmer seems to continue to fight the knee goblins a bit too hard.

Because of the attempt to make a car commercial some sort of "anthem" for our country, this song easily blows Like A Rock out of the water for most overplayed, annoying truck commercial song of all time. Followed closely by any Ford commercial featuring that country singer.

I tend to hit the mute button for most commercials, but I was working while "watching" that Pats/Colts game so the commercials kept sneaking up on me. I did start muting commericals (right after my post) the moment I heard the first twang of that guitar.
