Listening to the 80s song, Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leppard, I was thinking about what were the greatest Rock Anthems of all time. I'd definitely put this one up there.

Don't Stop Believing has to be up there.

Anything else is arguing for second place.

The song doesn't stand up well on it's own. It has to be combined with "We are the Champions" for full effect. Since that, by definition is a medley, it cannot be considered. :)

It's a good shout. Being raised in Leicester, and a generally miserbale bastard ;) , I'd put forward Chrome Molly's 'Thanx For The Angst'.

I've been trying to get CDs of all my tapes, and basically build up my digital music collection with favourite songs of yesterday.

The other week I rediscovered Saxon's 'Ride Like The Wind' which I had completely forgotten about for about 15 years. And hearing it again, I remembered the first time I heard it, on Tommy Vance's Friday Night Rock Show - I'd taped it and rushed down to play it my brother beacuse it was so good. Definitely worth inclusion IMHO.

NWOBHM - 6 intitals that mean a lot to British metal fans :)

Very good point. What about Bohemian Rhapsody?

I would probably put Fight the Good Fight ahead of Hold On.

Got to mention Paradise City.

Sweet Child O' Mine is more of a ballad. Not sure I'd call Welcome to the Jungle an "anthem" either.

Can anything by Def Leppard be considered the "Greatest" of anything? ;)

The majority of their catalogue is, AFAIK, the greatest music involving a one armed drummer.

Pyromania & Hysteria are quality albums though - and Pour Some Sugar is a great sing-along...

Actually I'm going to add D'Molls 'All I Want' into the mix - another song that gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it

Sing-along is how I would classify a song as a Rock Anthem. Everyone yelling the words with the song would be a requirement.

Agree - which is why Idlewild's 100 Broken Windows is one of my fave's - can belt out every song in the car at the top your lungs. But not true rock anthems.

Just from skimming through my iTunes old skool rock playlists, other mentions for:

Kiss - Crazy Nights
The Almighty - Wild & Wonderful, Full Force Lovin' Machine
Andrew WK - Party Hard
Deep Purple - Hush
Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild
Whitesnake - Here I Go Again

A few more:

Nothin' But A Good Time by Poison
Cherry Pie by Warrant
Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi
Jump by Van Halen
One by Metallica

Paradise City was already mentioned. I'm trying to think of something by AC/DC, but Thunderstruck doesn't fit and Back in Black isn't a shouter, IMHO.

Yeah. I'd also throw in Motley Crue's Wildside.

I was looking through my Crue collection when posting above, and while they're a great band, I honestly don't think they've come up with a classical rock anthem - Girls Girls Girls might be close, but IMHO it's not quite there... Kickstart My Heart maybe...

You Shook Me All Night Long? Or is that too much of a stripper song to be a Rock Anthem? If not that, then For Those About To Rock would qualify IMO.

I'm glad that someone else thinks so. I played that song at prayer service one time and caught unending hell for it...but the song is one of hope and perseverance.

I always thought of Def Lep as a sissy rock band, you know one that my sister would lesin to but I broke down and went to see them LIVE this summer with my wife and I have to say this band is 10000% better LIVE. They realy kicked ass !!!

Won't get fooled again or Baba Oreilly

Any steve miller song.

No matter where you go in this world, no matter who you are with, Steve Miller will ALWAYS be played at partys. I've been to parties with thugs carrying guns in one room/band guys in another room and college students in another room. somebody played the joker and EVERYBODY started singing.

Well, since the focus of discussion has seemed to move from anthems to party sing-alongs, "Shout" from the Animal House soundtrack (I think sung by the Isley Brothers) has to be considered.
