Interesting Website.. It's meant to tell you where you should live based on a quiz..

hxxp://www.findmyspot.com

cthomer5000 will find this funny, my #1 is Plainfield, NJ...

After that I get:

Some other NJ, a few NH, then PA..

I guess I emphasized cold more than I should have ;)...

I know you're down in Miami and all, but Baton Rouge isn't really the country. I guess it might seem that way to somebody from a huge city, but since I moved up to Pennsylvania, I've seen what "the country" really is. Some of these places around here make Baton Rouge look like Manhattan.

Your list looks in many ways similar to mine.. I think you probably did the same thing as me and probably emphasized cold weather a bit more than you really want.. it's hard in there to get the balance you want.. where you like "seasons", some snow, but you don't want it to be white all year round..

Yep, I did try to factor snow in there, and gave the thumbs down to humidity. I like the cold more than the heat.

Yep, I did try to factor snow in there, and gave the thumbs down to humidity. I like the cold more than the heat.

Ditto. I'm thinking that's the key. Cause I love Williamsburg really, and would love to have the settings for "whatever Williamsburg is"... but it's just hard to really get the weather stuff... and the cost of housing is a misleading question imo because housing cost depends on where you live, I don't like that as a factor..

But what it comes down to for me was tht most of the cities in my top 10-20 where towns that I view as much like Williamsburg in "feel", it was just the weather was shifting me to the NE... as I got down the list I had like Lynchburg, Roanoke, things like that...

It's weird....I've always had an affinity for North Carolina, and when I was in the market for one, have looked for jobs there. I've always thought it would be a great place to live...sort of the ideal mixture of cosmopolitan living with a smaller-town feel.

You have 4 seasons in each city. The summers are fairly mild for the south since you are up in the mountains. In addition, you have plenty of water nearby with all the rivers in the area. If you want beautiful scenery, you have the Smokey Mountains within an hour to a two hour drive from each. Both areas are smaller cities, but they are fairly large. The Knoxville metro is roughly 650,000 people while the Tri-Cities are roughly 500,000 (larger than Chattanooga). The schools, especially in Knoxville, are among the best in the state as far as public schools go. There are also plenty of universities in the area with ETSU (Johnson City) and UT (Knoxville).

Additionally, both areas are predominantly middle class with very little lower or upper classes in the area.

1. Norfolk, Virginia
2. Providence, Rhode Island
3. Long Island, New York
4. Baltimore, Maryland
5. Columbus, Ohio

I ranked local pro and college sport teams highly each time it was listed, and I think that heavily affected the outcome. And man, going by the house prices listed as average, housing in the States is a ton cheaper than it is over here in Australia... Getting a place in Norfolk for $182k ($233,000AU) is a damn sight cheaper than anything I could ever hope to buy within 6 hours drive of Sydney, Australia. Makes me think...

What's the deal with all the people getting "Long Island, New York" as a response? Long Island is about 100 miles long--at the western end is Brooklyn, the East End is (fast dwindling) farms, and in between you have ritzy enclaves, blighted communities, and plain old suburbia.

I briefly looked into a job opportunity there, but from what I remember the crime rate is pretty high.

2. Las Vegas, NV
Heh, no. Sleazy, dirty city where people age insanely fast. I don't even like visiting there.

3. Las Cruces, NM
Now we're getting somewhere. I could see myself possibly here.

4. Albuquerque, NM
Definitely worth checking out in my estimate. I like the fact that they get at least some snow in winter. Love snow, not a fan of cold.

5. Little Rock, AR
Don't know much about it other than that it's the state capital. How's the humidity in summer? I hate humid climates.

6. Baton Rouge, LA
61" of rain and 0" of snow? No thanks. Plus, I hear Lousiana's humidity is horrendous.

7. Norfolk, VA
I've always had this weird attraction to Virginia as a state and I don't know why. I'm even considering taking the GRE to be apply to some Virginia grad schools (which not all programs in my hopeful master's degree require)

8. Charleston, WV
Don't know much about West Virginia save for it has a hick reputation as a state. Whether or not that stereotype is true, I have no idea. :D

9. Honolulu, HI
Beautiful place to visit, but I'd miss being on the mainland too much and cost of living is HORRENDOUS.

10. Frederick, MD
Amusing. No opinion one way or the other.

11. Chesapeake-Virginia Beach, VA
Not liking the inch of snow.

12. Charlotte, NC
NC as a state is okay. For the longest time I wanted to go to Duke actually, before Princeton became my ideal school for one and for two, I found out Duke's basically a rich kids' playground school.

13. Long Beach, CA
Nah. SoCal city I like is San Diego.

14. Los Angeles, CA
No. I hate it almost as much as Vegas.

15. Alexandria, LA

16. Providence, RI

17. Hampton, VA

20. Orange County, CA
Ugh, no. Too many people and too much snobbery.

21. Rocky Mount-Stony Creek, NC
No clue.

22. New Haven, CT
Fucking Yale. A no because of that alone.

23. Gaithersberg, MD

24. Phoenix, AZ

Living somewhat near Norfolk, VA - I'd be shocked at you getting a place for 182k. It would have to be in the VERY rundown places in the city.. I would imagine a normal house is well over 300k on average.

Not too many surprises. I really don't like the weather down here in Louisiana and would prefer a less humid, less hot environment.

How about a decent, 2-bedroom apartment somewhat near town?

Not that I plan on any international relocation anytime soon, but it's interesting to ponder.

For rent? My gut feeling would tell me around 1200-1500, but I don't know the apartment market nearly as well as the housing market.

Nashville, TN (to demonstrate how bad this would be for me, my entire immediate family once left our family reunion in Nashville three days early because we hated the place)
Jackson, MS

There are lots of places in Texas on my list, and I really never saw myself as a "Texas person." I don't mean anything bad by that, but Texas seems to be one of those places that you either "get" or you "don't get." I've never been there, but I don't think I'd "get" it.

To speak toward the Florida places on my list, I've only been to the panhandle, but I have a good friend in Orlando, and he makes it sound good. Jacksonville is a big city, and I like that. I don't know very much about Tampa, but they do have a pro hockey team there, so that would be a plus.

As for the other places on my list, eh, I dunno. If I were going to live near Baton Rouge, I'd probably just go back to New Orleans.

Not surprised by the Florida and the Texas cities on the list. Florida is home and I have been looking into some options in Texas after I leave the military. I lived about 70 miles from Dothan but I can't see living there. Okie City and the Tenneesee towns were not on my radar though. Maybe I should investigate.

Do you have any actual experience with the Norfolk area market? I do. I'm not 'imagining' any price ranges either.

Peddling through online real estate doesn't necessarily count, although even there you can find places in that range.

It's a decent area, but I don't know if I'd recommend it to anyone.

If you hunt and dig for a long time, yeah, you might be able to...

But I would not call 185k in the normal "price range" of Norfolk which this site seems to imply that it is in the like 135-185k range. That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'm saying that 185k is definitely not in the "average price" for a good home.
