I think they are TOO literal in reading a website (http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/12/18/uk.prostitute.suspect/index.html)

This article relates to the Suffolk Stranger

IPSWICH, England (CNN) -- A man identified as a suspect arrested in connection with the killing of five prostitutes in eastern England has said in media interviews that he knew some of the women, but he denied involvement in their murders.

A profile of the man, identified in press reports as supermarket worker Tom Stephens, also emerged through a Web site he maintains showing photographs of himself in bizarre poses.

Police have yet to formally name the 37-year-old -- arrested at his home in Trimley, a small village near the port of Felixstowe -- but retail chain Tesco also confirmed one of its employees from a store branch in the nearby town of Martlesham had been taken into custody.

Stephens is a member of networking Web site MySpace, on which users can post details about themselves.

The page, on which he gives his nickname as "The Bishop," displays several images of Stephens in apparently comical poses.

In one he appears holding a tin of custard powder, another shows him riding a wheeled buggy and a third pictures him with eyes painted on his closed eyelids.

He describes his interests as "keeping fit," says he enjoys most types of music -- "especially from the 80s" -- and says cartoon character Hong Kong Phooey is his hero.

Stephens describes his employment as a "team leader" at Tesco from 1997 "until they sack me."

He says he has become a member of the Web site "for dating, serious relationships and friends."

Last week, Stephens told a BBC radio reporter that he knew some of the murdered women, identified as Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell, Annette Nicholls, Tania Nicol and Gemma Adams. (Watch: Suspect Stephens talking about the murdered women )

"I have known Gemma for about 18 months which is kind of about as long as I have known any of the girls," he said, according to the UK Press Association.

"Tania I have known for about six months, but in the end I did get to know Tania better than I knew Gemma.

"I didn't know Anneli at all and I have only spoken to her since Tania and Gemma went missing.

"Just to say if you know anything, talk to the police or if you don't talk to the police, talk to me. And also trying to say, 'are you OK?' I don't know what I was trying to say. "Pretty much all the girls who I didn't know before I have tried to speak to in that way."

The murders of the five women whose naked bodies were found over a period of 11 days has prompted a massive manhunt for the killer dubbed the "Suffolk Strangler" after the area the murders took place.

In an interview with the Sunday Mirror newspaper, Stephens said he would do what he could to help police catch the murderer.

"I've got to. It's not possible for me to do enough," he said, according to PA.

"If I got out of this car now and through my own initiative caught the man now, that wouldn't be enough. It wouldn't bring them back."

Stephens said two groups of officers had searched his house on November 22, PA said. His car was also searched.

He also admitted regular contact with prostitutes.

"I knew a lot of girls and I used to run them about.

"But I know I am innocent and I am certain it won't go as far as me being charged. I am completely confident of that."

The news media has no idea about these sites. Even the reporters they hire as "internet reporters" are just retread journalists who are almost always female, paid to point at a screen to tell us shit we could find out from going online ourselves.

I don't see where they don't get MySpace ... they might be a bit too literal, but it's information. People seem to want to know what makes a serial killer tick, so it goes to reason that the media will exhaust every angle to profile the guy. I'd imagine some thought was given to reporting the info in the event the page was pulled down as has happened in criminal cases.

I think a greater concern is that based on his MySpace page, empirical data suggests that there may be millions of potential serial killers on MySpace.

I think you're right. We should round them all up and put them in some sort of computerless enternment camp where they can no longer bother the world with their inane ramblings ;)
