Has anyone had any luck getting the XBox360 wireless adapter to work properly? I bought it at Best Buy earlier and have had no luck getting it to find my network. The XBox is situated right above my wireless router, with nothing that could be blocking it as far as I know. I have another computer on the other side of my house (and upstairs as well) that is picking up a great signal. Did anyone else have any problems when they set it up? My router is linksys wireless g.

I had a linksys wireless G when I first configured my router and had no problems. What does the dashboard diagnostic say when you run it? Do you have the ports (on your router) you need open?

How do I get to the dashboard diagnostic again? Also what ports need to be opened up and how would I go about that?

The dashboard diagnostic is all to the right I believe and under network settings. You need to have the following ports open: UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074. I think with a linksys router (it's been a while since I used one) that you enter 192.168.1.1 into your web browser on a PC that is connected into the internet to get to your router configuration settings. Then, depending upon the model, there should be a tab for a setting to open ports. Where that tab is and what exactly it is called is model dependent.

Are we talking about port forwarding here? If so, do I enter "88" as the application and UDP as the protocol?

Yes, I'm talking about port forwarding. I don't think 88 should be entered as the application. I think I have Xbox 360 as the application (which is just so I remember which port goes with which exception.) However, UDP should be the protocol at least for the 88 setting. Some routers have UPD/TCP as a protocol setting in which case you can use that and just enter one line for 3074. Otherwise, you need to do 2 lines for 3074 with each UDP being used on one and TCP on the other.

The numbers should go under a column which says "port" or something very similar.

You'll want to enter 88 in start and end with UDP as the protocol. And you'll want to enter 3074 in the start and end with both as the protocol.

Also, go to status and you should be able to see a MAC table or something like that which shouild tell you what address your 360 is assigned to (probably 192.168.1.101 if it is the first item on your network.) If so, you'll want to enter 101 into the box for the IP address on each of those lines.

The 360 is not listed in the active table.

just enter 101 in the IP Address box. IF it doesn't work, add duplicate lines with 102 in the IP Address box.

I got the ports set-up, but it is still not working correctly. It has found a couple of networks randomly, so I know the adapter is working and picking up signals.

Hmm. Is it picking up your wireless network?

If so, what problem is the network test on the 360 dashboard showing about your network.

GoldenEagle

No, it has not picked up my network at all.

There is the unspecified network option, but I will go in there and enter my SSID. I will then try to enter my WPA2 key and it will not let me do it, since the option is grayed out.

I assume you have your router set to broadcast the SSID?

Also, do you have it enabled to act as a DHCP server?

Also, what channel is the router running on? Have you set the 360 to the same channel?

Yes, the router is broadcasting the signal and another computer in the house is picking it up fine. I am not sure about the DCHP server, but I think it is.

It is on channel six. How can I check that in the 360?

There is an option somewhere under network settings I believe, but I can't remember exactly where. About to go to bed, but if you haven't figured this out by the time I wake up tomorrow, I'll check on the 360 as well as try to think of any other settings that might be a problem.

The DHCP Server is actually fairly important, so make sure to double check that.

It is enabled to act as a DCHP server. I messed around with it and tried and to create an ad-hoc network, but it would not let me enter a channel or select WPA2 as the security settings.

Thanks for your help and hopefully we can get it figured out in the morning.

Ok, have you tried manually entering in your Network SSID?

If not, here is how to do it. Tab all the way to the right to the system menu. Go into Network Settings. Then, go down to edit settings. Then push down twice to get to wireless mode/SSID. Click A on that and it brings up a screen with all of the active networks in your area, but if you don't see yours, click on the option to "specify unlisted network" which allows you to enter in the SSID, Channel number, etc.

One other thought that I would have to google for: I'm not sure the 360 supports WPA2? I have my network running WPA. When I try to create a dummy network, WPA2 is greyed out. I'm thinking the 360 might not have support for it. Looking around a few places to see if I can find any more info.

Bingo! Right from the 360's official site. The adapter does not support WPA2, although they may add that at some point in the future. It supports WEP and WPA at this time.

On the back of the box, it says it supports WPA2. I have tried to manually enter in the network with no luck because of the grayed out WPA2. Also, I tried to create an ad hoc network without much success either.

Yeah, according to that webpage, they even printed that it supported WPA2 in some manuals, but then decided not to support WPA2. I'm willing to bet that you will have to switch to WPA or WEP to use the 360 wireless adapter.

I got it up and running. Thanks for your help EF! The only problem now is I am having a hard time reading the scratch off code.
