View Full Version : The New Year's Day Bowl - A Tradition in Decline

Does anyone else feel that that the New Year's Day bowls don't mean what they used to mean? There was a time when New Year's Day was the culmination of the bowl season, when everything was decided. There were four or five bowls, and most of the top 10 teams would be playing. Getting into a New Year's Day bowl meant something. Now we have six bowls, and two of the traditional major bowls aren't even among them. There are unranked teams playing. There are five bowl games (including two no one cares about) after New Year's Day. There were quite a few better teams playing in bowls over the last week that are better than some of the teams playing in today's games.

It seems that not only can the NCAA not figure out a playoff system, they're intent on destroying the traditions that they're using as one of the excuses not to have a playoff system.

I miss CBS having the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl on opposite against ABC's Citrus, Rose and Sugar Bowls, with the Gator Bowl on NBC for good measure. I know it's been along time since we have had it, but I still miss those days.

I couldn't agree more with this sentiment, clint. What we have now not only pales in comparison to a playoff system, it is actually worse than what was already in place. If you are going to blow up tradition, you should at least have a decent reason...

They do ... $$$$$$
Prime time games tonight, tomorrow, Wednesday and next Monday. Spreading out the bowls means higher aggregate viewers and less channel flipping -- no watching the Rose Bowl and seeing what's going on in another bowl.

Correct - this is also why we will never see a playoff system unless they offer more lucrative money. They are a business, they could careless whether or not you like it, as long as they are making the money, that's all that matters.
