He's stepping down, press conference tomorrow at 1 PM
As a huge Steelers fan (making the trek to SB XL last year), he's really the only coach I knew for Pittsburgh (I barely remember Noll). Its a sad day.

Cowher was a great coach. I won't mention my thoughts on Noll.

Nick Saban has denied interest.
Which means that there will also be a press conference on Friday announcing the hiring of Nick Saban as the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
so will Cowher be the new Dolphins coach?

2 Predictions:
1) Russ Grimm will be named the new coach. He seems to have that Cowher-like intensity, and he has been interviewed multiple times for HC jobs in the past couple years. I think he would be a great replacement.
2) When the Panthers have another sub-par season next year, Fox is out and Cowher will be the next coach there, since he can stay close to home.

I agree with both predictions. I've got two more for you.
1. Whisenhunt is as good as gone to Atlanta to be their new head coach this season.
2. Coughlin will be back with the Giants next year; but when they struggle in 2007, Coughlin will be fired and Fox (fired from Carolina) will be hired to be with the NY Giants.

As a Panther fan, I really really hope we don't lose Fox.

Cowher won't be be able to coach anywhere in the NFL next season, unless a team gives some draft picks to the Steelers for the right to talk to him, since he is still under contract. However, the floodgates will be open for teams looking for a coach for the 2008 season.

I think that Whisenhunt would be a good fit there, but along the same lines, I wonder if Mike Mularkey (former Steelers O-coord, Bills HC) will get a look there (isn't he a O-Coord again somewhere?). Mularkey seemed to find different ways to get something out of Kordell Stewart, who had very little QB talent, but very athletic.

I doubt Mularkey will get a head coaching offer with how bad the Dolphins offense was this year.
However...I would not be surprised to see Mularkey back as the Steeler's OC this season.

I knew he was somewhere as an OC, just couldn't remember where. It would be interesting with him back, then both the OC and DC would be there for their second time around (possible first in the NFL?).
As long as Grimm or Whisenhunt are hired as the new coach, I'll be happy.

One of the most underrated coaches in the NFL IMO. He never got the "genius" tag that some other coaches got.

I predict Kirk Farentz will get the job. With the way Grimm coached our offensive line this year, his ass can hit the road.

If Ferentz gets the job, I will scream. As a Buckeye fan, I never really liked the guy, seemed after '02 they really underachieved, and fell apart this year after the Bucks came in there and won.
On Grimm, I think part of the problem was the fact that Parker can't pick anyone up, and neither can jittery Ben.
While I want either Grimm or Whiz, as long as someone gets Ben to plant his feet when he throws, I'll be happy.

No chance of Ferentz going to Pittsburgh. He's making a ton of money at Iowa and the Rooneys aren't going to match/exceed his pay and pay a buyout.

If they pick Ferentz, I will cry. Most overrated coach in the business.
I prefer Whisenhut, but could live with Grimm. Whichever one gets the job, I suspect the other will leave.

Sources tell me the Steelers have contacted the HC of Arkansas Tech, ardent enthusiast, through backchannels. It remains to be seen if they will pony up the dough or not. He's a pretty hot name, these days.

Fantastic coach throughout his tenure. Remember what he managed to do with Kordell freakin' Stewart?
This just goes one step further in closing the NFL book for me entirely.

Nothing too shabby about these numbers
* 10yrs out of 15 playoff appearances
* 6 AFC Championship Games
* 8 AFC Central/North Division Champs
* 2 Superbowl Appearances
* 1 Superbowl Victory
* Most wins in NFL since 1992
But I still feel as if the team should have won at least 2-3 more titles under his guidance, considering the positions they were in. He lost 4 AFC CG at home for goodness sakes.

As a Ravens' fan I really dislike the guy. But I respect his coaching ability and will miss seeing him on the enemy sideline.

Although never a Steeler fan, I've always had huge respect for Cowher. He'd probably be my answer to the old "football coach you'd most like to play for" question.

The Steelers, Bill Cowher and his agent might be among the first the Dolphins contact. If Pittsburgh grants the Dolphins permission to speak with its coach, a person close to Cowher said Wednesday he would be willing to listen. He reportedly wants a contract extension in Pittsburgh that would pay in excess of $7 million annually; the Steelers offered $6 million.
-- Miami Herald
Interesting. If true, he would (a) be willing to coach next year, and (b) be willing to leave Pittsburgh over $1M a year? Sounds like he just wants out.

I'd heard he wanted to spend more time with the family? Shrug...good luck in Miami. Or Dallas.

That's what has been widely reported, which is why the Herald's report surprises me. It may not be true, of course. You've got to figure that each year, there'll always be at least 1 or 2 decent jobs available and that the money will be there. So I don't think he needs to immediately jump into a new job, especially when it would cost his new team some draft picks to make it happen.

KORDELL STEWART
Yeah, but the defenses he had were top notch. Christ, TRENT DILFER won a superbowl once. The 2001 AFCCG was a prime example of Cowher's pathetic coaching. Bring in a kicker who sucks dick to attempt a FG which he had a 30% chance of making....it gets blocked, returned for a TD. I believe also that it was a 4th and 1, and he had Bettis.
Seriously, I should be more sad that he's quitting, but I'm not. I just wish he would have retired before he wasted 2006.
