So...when the inevitable rescue of these guys begin - who pays for it?

I don't know what you're talking about.

I'm referring to the big news story a couple of weeks ago about the guys trapped on Mt. Hood and this weeks story about the sailor who was attempting to sail around the world (and was just rescued off the coast of Chile).

Really - so these guys get a bill for services rendered?

And I was trying to figure out how someone gets stuck on a mountain while sailing around the world.

Oh good. I feared that I was the only person confused about that.

They bought the tickets. They knew what they were getting in to. I say -- "Let 'em crash."

The rescuing country does, I think they do try to bill these rescued parties or their insurance company. Good luck collecting.

Here's a article on that very subject about the Mt. Hood S&R efforts.

From what I can tell though, it isn't really as rare as the article makes it sound.
A little Googling turns up billing in Vermont & I know of some other cases where bills were issued as well.

I always thought it would be funny if there was some movie that opened with some "vigilante hero" trying to prove he was not guilty of a crime, etc. Blowing shit up left and right from the corrupt authorities. And then once he's free of the charges, he still gets a bill for like 1 million dollars in damages, and then the real movie begins.
