View Full Version : ABA vs NBA:The Rivalry Begins

"The ABA had a red, white and blue ball because I said it would have one. It was that simple. We wanted our own identity, and the ball is the symbol of basketball, isn't it? To this day, you ABA and people talk about the ball.

I admit that I had a personal beef about the brown ball. I remember sitting up in the balcony at some NBA games and I just couldn't see the darn thing that well. The arenas were darker then than they are now, and the ball just sort of blended into the background. When you watched a basketball game on television, that dirty brown ball didn't show up very well.

Okay, so I wanted a different color for our new league. Then I said, "What's the name of the league"

The American Basketball Association.

What's America's colors?

Red, white and blue.

So why not a red, white and blue ball?"

George Mikan, quoted in "Loose Balls: The Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association" by Terry Pluto, 1990.

Since the All-American Football Conference is going to play a tangential part of the CIE world I thought it would be nice to sim the AAFC and NFL season. The QPFootball (the same one used by Wolfpack in his college football dynasty) game at tabletop-sports.com suited my needs for the gridiron, both pro and college. But I didn’t want just a QP game for basketball.

I’ve been aching to play a basketball game for years and the BAA and NBL seemed to be the way to satisfy my desire. Settling on Statis Pro Basketball (which I did play about 15 years ago) I started looking for stats so I could start making player cards. Then two things hit me:

One, I can’t hold up CIE for a basketball season. I go slow; it’s a fact. It would be 2009 before I start the 1947 baseball season.

Two, pre-shot clock basketball is boring.

Well, one thing the ABA years weren’t was boring—it was an easy pick. I’m not going to try to do a story for this thread; Terry Pluto’s Loose Balls is better than any fiction I can come up with. This is going to be more of a GM/Coach perspective on the Association.

A couple notes on how players were created. Instead of using “as played” stats; I decided to use a 3-year average for each player. The 1967-1968 player card is based on the 66-67, 67-68, and 68-69 seasons. I also made cards for players drafted in 1966 and 1967 who did not debut until after the 68-69 season (Mike Silliman was, for example, the Knicks 1966 8th round pick, but did not make the NBA until 1970 with the Braves). For statistics like blocks, turnovers, steals and 3-point shots career totals are prorated to the player card. I could be completely wrong in how I did some of this so this could just fall apart after a couple weeks.

I also have an aging/salary system set up which may or may not work.

So this may go nowhere, or I might be merging the NBA and ABA in a decade. We’ll have to see how far it goes.

Rosters will be set at 11 for both Associations during the regular season. Players not in the 1967 drafts are assigned by the first team they appeared with in the 1967-1968 season.

I'm planning on playing an "exhibition" season this weekend to refamilarize myself with Statis Pro and make some roster decisions.

I will be using the actual "as played" schedules for both league when I begin the regular season. I should get this started by next weekend.

Loved the ABA. I remember my dad taking me to Kentucky Colonel games when I was a kid living in Louisville.

If you haven't checked out SFL Cat's "Sports and History" thread--do it now.

I don't have any direct memories of the ABA (the only pro game I've ever been to was a KC Kings/Chicago Bulls exhibition game--and that was to see ex-Illini Eddie Johnson), but I do remember only wanting to watch basketball if Dr. J was involved. I also remember his great Converse Ads ("Are you wearing magic shoes?") and those really bad "Dr. Chapstick" ads.

I did run a couple exhibition games last night and I need to make a couple changes. I severely undervauled 3-point attempts and probably should have prorated steals, blocks and turnovers on a per-minute basis and not a pre-game average. I'm definately making the changes for the 3-point attempts, but might leave the other stats alone.

The wife is going to LA this week for her job, so I should be able to get most of the exhibition schedule done while she is gone. I made the corrections to the 3-point attempts, steals and blocks and they at least look more accurate than the first batch I made.

For the exhibition season, it will be assumed all games are on neutral courts with Fast Break Offenses set to B and Fast Break Defenses set to C. Stamina (total of Fouls, Field Goal Attempts, and Rebounds) of players will be capped at 20. Also, any "ignore Stamina" for players at 20 or above will be ignored.

The ABA used a 30 second shot clock for all but its last season; for simplicity sake, both Associations will have a 24 second clock in my replay.

Exhibition Basketball tips-off when I get back from taking the wife to the airport.

Best laid plans and what not. Setting up the stat sheets and some other 'bookkeeping' items were more involved than I thought they would be. But the games are getting played faster and faster as I move on. Scoring is lower in games since scrubs are getting a good hunk of PT.
