Well, I'm going to LA for a conference next week from the 16th through the 18th. I know Hollywood is nearby and I'm bringing my digital camera along. Is there anywhere that is a "must see" while I'm there? Thanks in advance.

Griffith Observatory (http://www.griffithobs.org/) - for some great views
Santa Monica Promenade (http://www.downtownsm.com/) - for entertainment, shopping and of course, the beach.
Say hi to the city for me, I miss it so much :(

Oh yeah and my favorite:
Universal City Walk (http://www.citywalkhollywood.com/) - shopping, motion theater, movie theater and the occasional celebrity.
Lots of good memories for us there.

Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, are a must-see. Much nicer beaches than Santa Monica and Venice in my opinion. Hollywood will be fun to see and if you get a chance to check out Griffith Park I think you'd enjoy it.

Where are you going to be staying? How much free time do you have? What sort of car access do you have? Public transportation isn't the best in LA, and our cabs are fairly expensive. If you tell me where you're staying, I can give you a list of places in your particular area.
Definitely agree with the Griffith Observatory recommendation. It just reopened after a two year renovation project.
I personally really dislike Universal City Walk, but I think that's because I live within five miles of the place and going to the movies there is a disaster for a local.

Let me know when you arrive in town. I can show you around and buy you a beer.

You're guaranteed to see at least 1 he/she on Sunset Blvd. Antmeister and I lived around there and got to see a lot of interesting people.
Citywalk and the Santa Monica Promenade bring back some real nice memories when Antmeister and I dated as well as a hang out spot with my friends. So to each their own, I guess.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood is cool.
Malibu's kind of on fire right now, though, so you might want to avoid that general area.

I know if you want to take a studio tour I really liked the Warner Brothers Studio Tour when I was out there a few years ago. Not sure if it is must see, but it was interesting.

I agree. Of course, you can cheat and start from the top by parking on Mulholland.

speaking of Mulholland its a neat drive from the 101 to I-5, zigging and zagging by the billion dollar homes.

I'm flying into LAX on Tuesday at 1:05 PM and have a rental car. I fly back out on Thursday at 5:55 PM. So, I have all Tuesday afternoon and evening free, as well as Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon. I'm staying at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton.
I'll have to check out the Griffith Observatory as well as the Universal City Walk. Thanks!

If you are staying near the airport, I would definitely check out the South Bay beaches pennywisesb mentioned. Manhattan and Hermosa are great. Huge, wide beaches with nice neighborhoods and strands with pubs, etc.
On the opposite side of the airport (just to the north), you can check out the mile long freakshow that is Venice Beach. It's worth taking a look at Muscle Beach and all of the street performers.

Thanks all. It seems as if there's too much to do and not enough time to do it. I also noticed that you have to make reservations at the Griffith Observatory in advance.
